Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can Ethernet color Letter jobs combine 650 supplied input sheets, Personal Job PIN and a 5,000-page monthly workload?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible desktop print driver. The 650-sheet ordinary-paper capacity is valid for Letter; two-sided jobs still require manual refeeding.
Explore this need in the finder →Will this exact n automatically print A4 reports on both sides?
Fails. The original n column explicitly marks automatic duplex unavailable and the exact US technical field specifies manual duplex. Generic family promotion does not change that hardware.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the supplied trays provide 550 Legal sheets?
Fails. The included main cassette does not take Legal. Supplied Legal capacity is 100 sheets in the multipurpose tray; a suitable additional feeder is optional.
Explore this need in the finder →A color printer for an attended office routine
The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553n makes sense as an earlier wired color printer when the office wants substantial ordinary-paper input and can handle two-sided documents manually. It combines a 100-sheet multipurpose input with a 550-sheet main cassette. A compatible desktop driver also provides Personal Job PIN release, so a document can wait until its owner reaches the printer.
The deciding limitation is the n suffix. The original comparison explicitly marks automatic duplex unavailable, and HP's exact US technical specification says manual duplex. A generic lower-page marketing paragraph about fast two-sided output should not override those precise configuration statements. If automatic two-sided reports are a daily requirement, choose a model whose included duplexer is documented.
This assessment covers US B5L24A#BGJ, which HP marks discontinued. It is print only, without a scanner, copier, document feeder or fax. Its four-line color display and numeric keypad are useful job controls, but neither means it scans color originals.
What the supplied paper inputs really hold
The combined 650-sheet capacity uses the guide's ordinary 75-g/m², 20-lb paper basis. Letter and A4 fit both included inputs. Set their guides, keep the stack below the fill line and confirm the displayed paper size and type after closing the cassette. A thicker paper stock changes how much fits; the headline total should not be applied to every material.
Legal is different. It fits the supplied multipurpose tray, while the main cassette's documented maximum length stops short of Legal. Standard Legal capacity is therefore 100 sheets. Additional 550-sheet feeders can support longer paper, but they are optional on the n. Verify which feeders actually accompany a second-hand machine instead of treating the family's maximum tray count as included equipment.
For two-sided desktop output, select the driver's manual duplex option, print the first side and follow the refeeding instructions. The original Mac routine specifies removing unused paper from Tray 1 and returning the printed stack with its printed side down. Controls and prompts can differ by driver, so check an actual short document before starting a large report. This is an attended process, regardless of the engine's rated speed.
Mailing and labels use different paths. Envelopes go through Tray 1, up to ten, face down in the documented orientation. Label sheets use Tray 2 rather than Tray 1. Select the correct paper type before printing; a supported envelope routine does not imply automatic duplex for envelopes or labels.
Choose a real connection and release method
Computer USB and wired Ethernet are included. The easy-access USB port is a separate flash-drive printing feature, disabled by default until Enable Retrieve from USB is enabled. It should not be confused with the computer connection. The n lacks the x model's integrated NFC and Wi-Fi Direct, and infrastructure wireless requires optional equipment. Wireless accessory advertisements are not evidence that a standard n contains a radio.
For PIN collection, open Job Storage in a compatible desktop driver, choose Personal Job and configure the four-digit PIN. At the printer, choose Retrieve from Device Memory, then the folder and named job, enter its PIN and release the copies. The original procedure enables Job Storage by default and does not make Personal Job conditional on buying the optional hard disk. Nonetheless, similarly named jobs can overwrite one another and older jobs may be removed when memory is needed. Treat this as controlled collection, not a document archive.
AirPrint and Mopria are also listed. A suitable network can connect the printer by Ethernet while the phone uses the network's wireless access point; that does not add Wi-Fi to the printer. Mobile printing is assessed separately from desktop PIN and paper controls. An old cloud-printing service mentioned in a guide is not promised to remain available.
Workload, toner and installation checks
HP rates black and color output up to 40 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately from 37 ppm on A4. Its recommended monthly range is 2,000–6,000 pages; the 80,000-page duty figure is a maximum rather than a target workload. None of these declarations represents a hands-on speed or reliability test.
The original US box lists standard toner at about 6,000 black pages and 5,000 per color. High-yield replacements increase the maker's declared figures to about 12,500 black and 9,500 per color under its ISO/IEC 19798 basis, with actual yield varying. Those optional cartridges do not establish what remains inside an earlier machine.
The closed body measures 18.0 by 18.9 by 15.7 inches and weighs 59.5 pounds. Allow substantially more room for opening and servicing it. HP identifies Class A commercial equipment and lists separate regional power supplies, so inspect the actual electrical plate and current driver availability. Keep an M553n when its wired, manually duplexed routine fits; choose a documented current duplex or multifunction model when that routine would become a daily obstacle.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact n up to 40 one-sided Letter pages per minute in black or color, separately 37 A4 ppm in the original comparison. Recommended monthly range 2,000–6,000; 80,000 is maximum duty, not a recommended workload or measured performance.
Paper handling
Included 100-sheet Tray 1 plus 550-sheet Tray 2, ordinary 75-g/m², 20-lb basis. Letter/A4 fit both; Legal only Tray 1, so supplied Legal input is 100. Additional 550-sheet trays are optional and not part of the 650 total. Automatic duplex explicitly unavailable; compatible desktop manual refeeding is required. Up to ten envelopes in Tray 1; label sheets use Tray 2 rather than Tray 1. Output bin is separate.
Scanning arrangement
Exact print-only scope has no scanner, copier, original feeder or fax. The four-line color display and ten-key keypad control printing; they do not establish document capture.
Computer and mobile connections
Included computer USB and Ethernet, with separate easy-access USB printing. The latter is disabled by default and needs the documented Enable Retrieve from USB setting. Original n column has no hardware integration pocket or integrated NFC/Wi-Fi Direct; wireless accessories remain optional. No standard Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct operating plan.
Supplies and declared yields
Original US box lists preinstalled black about 6,000 pages and colors about 5,000 each. Standard replacements CF360A black and CF361A/CF362A/CF363A colors; high-yield CF360X black about 12,500 and CF361X/CF362X/CF363X colors about 9,500 each. Maker ISO/IEC 19798 declaration, variable actual yield. High-yield replacements are not the original included set; no remaining-toner or cost-per-page claim.
Software and support
Original default-enabled Job Storage and actual Personal Job controls support configured four-digit PIN release with a compatible desktop driver; the original procedure does not make Personal Job conditional on the optional hard disk. Named jobs can be overwritten or evicted, so storage is not an archive guarantee. AirPrint/Mopria use an appropriate shared network via Ethernet and are assessed separately from desktop PIN/media settings. Old OS/cloud references do not guarantee present software or cloud-service operation.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact discontinued US B5L24A#BGJ. The technical page lists separate 100–127-V, 60-Hz and 200–240-V, 50-Hz editions and explicitly says not dual voltage; actual option/plate not independently established, so mains compatibility remains unknown. FCC Class A commercial equipment. Closed body 18.0 × 18.9 × 15.7 inches, 59.5 lb with cartridge basis unstated. Original fully opened clearance 32.5 inches wide and 30.4 deep is larger than the US maximum-dimensions row; allow original opening/service space.
