Color LaserJet Enterprise M553x (B5L26A#BGJ; US reference)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible commercial office printing a recommended 2,000–6,000 pages monthly and needing the included extra paper feeder.

The main tradeoff

Infrastructure Wi-Fi, stand and hard disk are optional. Legal capacity is smaller than the headline total, and mobile printing does not inherit desktop PIN or duplex controls.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can Ethernet color Legal printing provide 650 ordinary input sheets, automatic duplex and Personal Job PIN for 4,000 pages monthly?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and the compatible desktop driver routine. Legal uses Tray 1 and included Tray 3; the main cassette is excluded.

Does the 1,200-sheet headline also mean 1,200 Legal sheets?

Fails. The 550-sheet main cassette does not accept Legal; supplied Legal capacity is 650.

Can the base x join an office infrastructure Wi-Fi network without an additional print server?

Fails. Integrated Wi-Fi Direct is a separate peer printing arrangement; ordinary infrastructure wireless requires optional hardware.

The x package adds a real paper tray

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553x is a color print-only model with three included inputs, automatic duplex hardware and a touchscreen. Its particular advantage is the extra 550-sheet feeder already included in the x configuration. The deciding distinction is that this creates 1,200 ordinary Letter or A4 input sheets, while Legal capacity is only 650.

The exact US model is B5L26A#BGJ, explicitly discontinued by HP. It is an earlier commercial-office reference, not a current-stock claim. Its Class A installation scope and substantial paper package deserve checking against the actual unit rather than a generic M553 family advertisement.

HP declares up to 40 Letter pages per minute in black or color, separately 37 ppm on A4. The recommended monthly range is 2,000–6,000 printed pages, distinct from 80,000 maximum duty. A two-sided image rate or a number in an acoustic test condition is not substituted for those one-sided specifications.

Legal does not fit the main cassette

The supplied package contains a 100-sheet multipurpose tray, 550-sheet main cassette and 550-sheet third input. Ordinary capacities use the original guide's 75-g/m², 20-lb basis. Letter and A4 can use all three inputs; Legal uses the multipurpose tray and the included third feeder, with the main cassette excluded.

The original general loading chapter calls additional feeders optional because it also covers n and dn. The exact x model column and its US box list establish that one is included here. Further feeders and the printer stand remain optional. Check the actual tray package on an earlier offer rather than adding every pictured accessory.

The maker's supported-paper table explicitly includes Letter, Legal and A4 in the automatic duplexer. Select the correct paper type and size, then enable the supported desktop driver's two-sided option. The narrower automatic-duplex media-weight range still matters; a thick sheet accepted through an input is not automatically suitable for duplexing.

Match specialty stock to the right path

For ordinary loading, adjust the guides to the selected size, keep the stack below its fill mark and confirm or modify the tray's panel settings. Guides should touch without bending the paper. The 250-sheet output bin is separate from blank-paper capacity.

Envelopes use Tray 1 only, up to ten, with the documented face-down orientation for the intended feeding edge. Labels instead use the main or supported 550-sheet cassette; the original instructions explicitly exclude Tray 1. Set Labels and the correct stock size in the driver. Those jobs do not preserve the ordinary-sheet loading total.

Direct mobile printing is different from office Wi-Fi

The actual x comparison confirms integrated NFC and Wi-Fi Direct for compatible mobile printing. Its separately listed wireless print server is an optional way to join a conventional office wireless network. Included direct printing therefore does not establish included infrastructure Wi-Fi.

For an office shared network, the base wired arrangement uses Ethernet. AirPrint and Mopria are documented for compatible mobile devices and the appropriate network and firmware. Direct printing has its own compatible-device arrangement; it does not inherit the desktop driver's private-job controls or precise paper capacity.

Computer USB is another included print connection, distinct from the easy-access host port for a flash drive. The walk-up host port is disabled by default in the guide and must be enabled before use. A touchscreen and USB host do not create a scanner, copier or fax.

Personal Job retrieval and supply planning

The original job-storage feature is enabled by default. In a compatible desktop driver, choose Personal Job and its private option; at the touchscreen, retrieve the named folder and document and provide the PIN when requested. The Mac instructions explicitly describe a four-digit PIN.

The optional hard disk is not made a prerequisite for this documented included-memory routine. However, the source does not establish a permanent document archive for the base configuration. Distinct user and job names matter because a new file can replace a waiting job of the same name, and storage limits can remove older jobs.

The original US box lists standard toner around 6,000 black pages and 5,000 each color. Replacement 508X cartridges are declared around 12,500 black or 9,500 each color under HP's ISO conditions; actual yields vary. The body is approximately 18 by 18.9 by 22.9 inches and 73.6 pounds, with larger door and tray clearances. Verify the actual voltage edition and current driver support before choosing this earlier x package.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact x up to 40 Letter black/color ppm, separately 37 A4 ppm. Recommended monthly printing 2,000–6,000 versus 80,000 maximum duty. Duplex image rate, first-page time and acoustic configuration rate are not one-sided Letter ppm or hands-on measurements.

Paper handling

Exact x includes 100-sheet Tray 1, 550-sheet Tray 2 and one 550-sheet Tray 3: 1,200 ordinary Letter/A4 sheets on 75-g/m², 20-lb basis. Legal only Tray 1 plus included Tray 3 totals 650; main Tray 2 excludes Legal. Further feeders and stand excluded, output 250 separate. Actual maker paper-path table confirms automatic Letter/Legal/A4 duplex, with compatible driver and stock limits. Envelopes up to ten from Tray 1 only; labels require Tray 2 or supported 550-sheet cassette, not Tray 1.

Scanning arrangement

Exact print-only color laser with no scanner, copier, feeder or fax. Touchscreen and USB host are print/control features, not capture hardware.

Computer and mobile connections

Included computer USB and Ethernet. Original Edition 2 January 2019 exact x column explicitly confirms integrated NFC and Wi-Fi Direct; the ordinary infrastructure wireless print server is optional. Historical Wireless Direct wording alone is not used to infer the standard protocol: current exact matrix and original explicit Wi-Fi Direct wording provide positive evidence. Shared-network AirPrint/Mopria and direct mobile printing stay separate from desktop private-job/media controls.

Supplies and declared yields

Original US box standard cartridges around 6,000 black and 5,000 each color; replacement CF360A around 6,000/CF360X around 12,500 and CF361A/CF362A/CF363A around 5,000 or X colors around 9,500, ISO/IEC 19798 declaration with variable actual yield. Exact 508 family independently confirmed in original guide. No remaining toner, current price or cost-per-page claim.

Software and support

Original Job Storage enabled by default, 1 GB included memory and actual Personal Job/PIN retrieval routine, with no optional disk prerequisite stated for that routine. Four-digit PIN entry documented; named folder/job retrieval and replacement/oldest-job storage limits matter. Permanent persistence is not established here. Optional hard disk/security modules excluded. Mac duplex controls may not be available through AirPrint; check current drivers and firmware rather than historical OS/cloud-service lists.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US B5L26A#BGJ explicitly discontinued, FCC Class A commercial scope. Body 18 × 18.9 × 22.9 inches and 73.6 lb with cartridge basis unspecified. Original x fully open dimensions are materially larger than current US maximum headline; allow approximately 33.6 inches width and 30.4 inches depth for doors/trays, plus service access. Source lists separate 100–127-V 60-Hz and 200–240-V 50-Hz editions, not dual voltage; exact option-to-electrical crosswalk unknown, verify actual rating plate.
