Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can my USB-connected computer print Letter color documents automatically on both sides with 650 ordinary sheets available and PIN release selected?
Qualifies for the documented US configuration with a compatible driver. The included inputs total 650 ordinary 75-g/m² Letter sheets, automatic duplex is included, and exact-model private printing uses the included eMMC. Select Personal Job/PIN in the driver and enter the PIN at the keypad to release the document.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the standard Ethernet configuration keep 650 Legal sheets loaded?
Fails. Legal uses the 100-sheet multipurpose input in the base configuration. The included 550-sheet main cassette stops at 216 × 297 mm; an optional lower feeder is not included.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it scan and copy Letter documents over the computer USB connection?
Fails. The M554dn is a dedicated printer with no scanner, glass, document feeder or copying function. The shared guide and security references do not add capture hardware.

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn is a dedicated color printer for an office that wants a substantial Letter or A4 paper reserve, automatic print duplex and driver-controlled private jobs. Its included inputs are a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 550-sheet cassette. There is no document scanner, copier, fax, glass or original feeder.
This review covers the exact US 7ZU81A#BGJ reference and its documented 100–127-V, 60-Hz configuration. The separately specified 200–240-V, 50-Hz version is not another setting on a universal supply. HP also identifies the model as a Class A device for a commercial environment. The surviving US product reference establishes the configuration without establishing current stock.
Recommended printing volume is 2,000–8,500 pages per month, distinct from the 80,000-page maximum duty figure. The exact North American sheet rates one-sided black and color output at up to 35 ppm for Letter or 33 ppm for A4. An anomalous 56-ppm A4 entry in the shared user-guide table is not adopted over that exact data sheet.
Use the actual computer interface and M554 controls
Included computer connections are Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet. Configure the wired network and install an appropriate exact-model print driver when paper handling and private-job controls matter. HP specifies that the computer USB cable is purchased separately.
The front easy-access USB port has a separate flash-drive printing role and requires administrator enablement. The Hardware Integration Pocket and additional internal USB connections support accessories; they do not mean every compatible option is included.
Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth Low Energy and NFC require optional wireless hardware. The original accessory notes also identify an internal-USB prerequisite for the Jetdirect 3100w arrangement. No wireless accessory is counted in the base finder plan.
The M554 uses a 2.7-inch color graphics display with physical controls and a number pad. The M555 touchscreen illustrated in the same guide belongs to a different configuration. Use the M554's arrow, OK and keypad controls when selecting a displayed menu or entering a PIN, rather than expecting a touch interface.
Letter and A4 capacity does not become Legal capacity
The included trays hold 100 plus 550 ordinary sheets, with the guide's capacity based on 75-g/m², 20-lb paper. That totals 650 sheets for supported Letter or A4 stock. The 250-sheet output bin is separate, and an optional lower cassette is not included.
Legal fits the multipurpose tray, but the included Tray 2 stops at 216 × 297 mm. The exact compatibility table confirms Legal in Tray 1 and the optional lower feeders, omitting it from Tray 2. Consequently the base Legal reserve is 100 sheets, not 650. An office that prints long Legal runs should account for that difference before choosing this configuration.
Automatic duplex is positively documented for Letter, Legal and A4. Use supported ordinary 60–163-g/m² stock and the correct driver size and type. Paper that can pass through an input path is not automatically suitable for every two-sided combination. This is not an A3 or 11 × 17-inch Tabloid printer.
Open the multipurpose tray extension to support the sheet. Keep stock below the fill line and bring the guides lightly against it without bending it. For the main cassette, check the displayed tray configuration after closing it and select Modify when its size or type is wrong.
Loading directions depend on the tray and printed orientation
For portrait preprinted stock in Tray 2, one-sided printing uses face up with the page top to the right. Automatic duplex uses face down with the top to the left. Landscape stock keeps its top toward the back, with the printable face up for one-sided or down for duplex.
Portrait preprinted stock in Tray 1 instead uses face down and top edge first for one-sided work, or face up and bottom edge first for duplex. Alternative Letterhead Mode changes normal loading to use the duplex arrangement for both job types; it is documented as disabled by default.
Envelopes use Tray 1 only, up to ten, printable face down in one of the guide's supported top-edge orientations. Match the actual envelope size and type. Label sheets use Tray 2 or an installed supported lower cassette; the original specifically excludes labels from Tray 1. Select Labels and the correct sheet size in the driver. Follow these exact media routes instead of assuming that every special item goes through the multipurpose input.
Select Personal Job before relying on PIN release
The exact M554dn column establishes job storage and private printing, together with included 4-GB eMMC storage. In a compatible computer driver, select Personal Job and assign the PIN option. At the printer, open Print from Job Storage, choose the saved folder and document, enter its four-digit PIN and release it.
Ordinary printing does not become private automatically. Proof and Hold prints an initial copy, while Personal Job waits for release and is deleted after printing; it is also lost if power is removed. Optional disks, card readers and licensed pull-print services have different requirements and are not included merely because the family guide lists them.
AirPrint on the same network subnet and Mopria certification are documented. A mobile device may use the office access point while the printer remains on Ethernet. The mobile plan does not inherit desktop PIN, duplex, size or input-capacity guarantees.
Budget for four cartridges and real access space
US 212A replacements are W2120A black, approximately 5,500 pages, and W2121A cyan, W2122A yellow and W2123A magenta, approximately 4,500 each. The X versions are rated at 13,000 black or 10,000 per color. HP declares continuous-printing ISO/IEC 19798 yields. Included color cartridges have a separately stated 3,500-page composite figure and a manufacturing-date qualification; do not substitute replacement yield for the supplied set.
Dynamic security concerns the cartridge chip and can block non-HP chips after firmware updates. No lifetime HP+ condition is invented. The documented body is 18 × 18.9 × 15.7 inches and 60.6 lb, with no cartridge-weight basis stated. Allow front supply, right-door, tray and cable access; original open dimensions vary, and optional feeders change the assembly.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact North American M554dn sheet declares one-sided black/color output at up to 35 ppm for Letter or 33 ppm for A4. The shared guide anomalously prints 56 ppm for A4; that value is not adopted. Recommended monthly printing is 2,000–8,500 pages, distinct from 80,000 maximum duty.
Paper handling
The included 100-sheet multipurpose tray and 550-sheet cassette total 650 ordinary Letter/A4 sheets at 75 g/m², 20 lb. Tray 2 stops at 216 × 297 mm and does not support Legal; base Legal capacity is the 100-sheet Tray 1 only. Optional lower cassettes and output250 are excluded. Exact maker table confirms Letter/Legal automatic duplex, and exact M554dn media fields confirm A4 automatic duplex; ordinary duplex uses supported 60–163-g/m² stock. Keep stock below fill lines, adjust guides lightly and verify actual panel/driver size/type. Portrait preprinted Tray 2 stock is face up/top right for simplex, face down/top left for duplex. Landscape keeps top back with face up for simplex/down for duplex. Portrait Tray 1 stock is face down/top first for simplex or face up/bottom first for duplex. Alternative Letterhead Mode, off by default, uses duplex loading for both. Envelopes use Tray 1 only, up to ten face down in the documented top-edge orientation; labels instead use Tray 2 or a supported installed lower cassette, never Tray 1.
Scanning arrangement
Complete original exact M554dn hardware and North American functions identify a dedicated color printer with no scanner, copier, fax, glass or original feeder. Shared security terminology such as encrypted email/PDF does not create a document-capture route.
Computer and mobile connections
Included computer connections are Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet; the US USB cable is separate. Easy-access host USB is for flash-drive jobs and needs administrator enablement. Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, BLE and NFC require optional hardware; the original Jetdirect 3100w arrangement also lists an internal-USB accessory prerequisite. AirPrint uses the same subnet as the Apple device; Mopria is documented. A phone may use the office access point while the printer uses Ethernet. Mobile plans do not borrow desktop PIN, duplex, paper sizes or input capacity.
Supplies and declared yields
US 212A replacements are W2120A black at approximately 5,500 pages and W2121A cyan, W2122A yellow, W2123A magenta at approximately 4,500 each. X versions rate 13,000 black or 10,000 per color. HP declares continuous-printing ISO/IEC 19798 yields. The supplied color set has a separate approximately 3,500-page composite declaration with a manufacturing-date qualification; replacement yields are not assigned to it or to remaining toner. Dynamic security concerns HP cartridge chips; no tested yield, current price or lifetime HP+ commitment is invented.
Software and support
The exact M554dn includes private printing and 4-GB eMMC. A compatible driver must select Personal Job and its PIN option; use Print from Job Storage, choose the folder/document and enter the four-digit PIN for release. Personal Jobs are deleted after printing and lost on power removal. Proof and Hold prints its first copy and is different. M554 has a physical keypad/OK/arrow interface, not the M555 touchscreen shown in the shared guide. Optional disks, readers and licensed services are not assumed included. The family guide lists optional disks/stand and up to three lower feeders, while the North American exact sheet marks disk/stand unavailable and one optional feeder; no upgraded combination is promised.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US identity is 7ZU81A#BGJ with documented 100–127-V, 60-Hz configuration, separate from 200–240-V, 50-Hz supply. The surviving reference has no observed exact discontinued notice and does not establish stock. HP specifies a Class A commercial environment. Closed body is 18 × 18.9 × 15.7 inches and 60.6 lb, with cartridge-weight basis unspecified. Family-guide open width/depth differ from the exact North American sheet; check actual front supply, right-door, tray and cable clearance. Optional feeders are not included in these body dimensions.
