Color LaserJet Enterprise M555dn 7ZU78A#BGJIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible commercial office that prints recurring color documents and uses configured desktop PIN retrieval.

The main tradeoff

Wireless is optional and the standard main cassette is shorter than Legal; verify exact-size duplex and actual electrical edition.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it print color on the documented desktop connection, with PIN retrieval and the supplied paper capacity for 5,000 pages monthly?

Yes, with compatible full driver and configured private-job mode. Exact paper-size duplex support is assessed separately.

A color printer for a wired office routine

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M555dn is a print-only color laser with an included automatic duplexer and a touchscreen. Its standard connections are computer USB and Gigabit Ethernet. It fits an office that already has digital documents and wants a shared printing destination, rather than a machine for scanning incoming paper.

HP identifies the exact US 7ZU78A#BGJ configuration as discontinued. That makes condition, suitable software and the actual package important alongside the original feature list. The dn does not include the wireless hardware found in the x configuration.

Paper size changes the useful capacity

The ordinary supplied inputs total 650 sheets: 100 in the multipurpose tray and 550 in the main cassette. Additional 550-sheet feeders are optional. Do not count those accessories merely because the printer can accept them.

The main cassette’s size boundary matters for Legal documents. The reviewed specification supports Legal in the multipurpose tray, while the standard main cassette is shorter. As assessed without extra feeders, Legal capacity is therefore 100 sheets rather than the headline 650. Letter and A4 use the larger ordinary-paper arrangement.

Special media also follow specific routes. The original guide directs envelopes to Tray 1 with a ten-envelope ceiling. Label sheets instead use the main cassette or a suitable 550-sheet feeder, rather than the multipurpose tray. Matching the media type in the driver is part of using those instructions correctly.

Automatic duplex needs the appropriate controls

The dn includes two-sided printing, with the original guide documenting the desktop driver routine. Choose the required binding direction and media settings in compatible software. General duplex support should not be treated as proof that every custom size or special material can use the same path.

The sections reviewed for this model do not establish a complete size-specific duplex list, so this assessment keeps that boundary explicit. A buyer with an essential combination of a particular paper size and automatic duplex should verify that exact path before choosing it.

Use actual private-job settings for PIN retrieval

The operating instructions explain Personal Job and Stored Job modes, including PIN protection. With compatible controls, the document waits for the appropriate panel retrieval process. This is direct evidence of the job feature, separate from a general promise about encrypted storage or user sign-in.

Personal jobs have their own retention limits: they are removed after printing and can be lost if the printer loses power. Choose the job mode deliberately. An administrator password or an optional disk does not replace setting the intended privacy controls in the print workflow.

Keep Ethernet printing separate from optional wireless

The built-in network connection shares the printer over Ethernet. Wireless infrastructure networking and Wi-Fi Direct require optional hardware on dn. Neither the touchscreen nor the network capability proves that a radio is already fitted.

AirPrint and Mopria are identified local-network print routes, but they may expose different controls from the full desktop driver. Do not assume that mobile printing supplies the same PIN, tray or finishing options. The host USB port is another distinct route and is disabled by default in the original guide until an administrator enables it.

Check the earlier unit as a complete office installation

HP’s recurring recommendation is 2,000–10,000 printed pages monthly. Maximum duty is a separate figure. The four-color supply system and disclosed cartridge-chip restrictions belong in an ownership decision alongside software availability and condition.

Allow room for open trays and maintenance access, and verify the actual electrical plate rather than reading regional alternatives as universal voltage. The M555dn suits compatible wired color printing with controlled job release; choose a different package if included wireless or more Legal-capable input is central to the routine.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact M555 references specify up to 40 Letter and 38 A4 ppm. The shared user guide anomalously says 56 A4 ppm; that value is retained as a source discrepancy and not adopted. Recommended recurring printing is 2,000–10,000 pages, separate from 80,000 maximum duty.

Paper handling

dn includes 100-sheet multipurpose plus 550-sheet main tray, totaling 650; extra 550 feeders optional. Legal is supported in Tray 1, not the standard main cassette, so supplied Legal capacity is 100. Letter/A4 ordinary input capacity is separate. Automatic print duplex is confirmed, but exact duplex sizes are not established by the sections read here, so size-specific duplex matching is not promised. Original envelope instruction uses Tray 1 only, up to ten; labels instead use Tray 2 or a suitable 550-sheet tray, not Tray 1.

Scanning arrangement

Print-only model, without scanner, copying or fax. A touchscreen, host USB or mobile application does not establish document capture.

Computer and mobile connections

Included computer USB and Gigabit Ethernet; infrastructure wireless and Wi-Fi Direct require optional hardware, not counted in this dn base. AirPrint/Mopria local print support is separate from full desktop private-job controls; appropriate network, firmware and software required.

Supplies and declared yields

Four-color HP 212A/212X replacement family; original in-box and replacement yields differ and older production can differ. Verify compatible cartridges and remaining supplies. HP discloses dynamic security and cartridge-chip restrictions; no current price, cost-per-page or invented test is provided.

Software and support

Original Windows/macOS Job Storage instructions explicitly support Personal Job/Stored Job and four-digit PIN retrieval at the panel. This is independent of optional hard disk, encrypted storage or administrator authentication. Configure a compatible driver and actual job mode; a Personal Job is lost after printing or power loss. Mobile routes do not inherit desktop PIN or detailed finishing controls.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US product page identifies a discontinued #BGJ configuration. Technical electrical text nevertheless lists separate regional supplies and expressly says not dual voltage; the actual unit plate is required, so exact mains remains unknown. HP identifies this as a Class A commercial-environment device. Allow open tray, service-door and cable clearance, not only closed dimensions.
