Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can it print color on the documented desktop connection, with PIN retrieval and the supplied paper capacity for 5,000 pages monthly?
Yes, with compatible full driver and configured private-job mode. Exact paper-size duplex support is assessed separately.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it scan paper originals over Wi-Fi?
No. It is a print-only machine.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the supplied package hold its full ordinary capacity when loaded exclusively with Legal paper?
No. The standard main cassette is shorter than Legal; the supported Legal capacity is lower.
Explore this need in the finder →Included wireless and an extra feeder define this package
The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M555x combines a color print engine with an included third paper tray and wireless connectivity. The exact US 7ZU79A#BGJ configuration differs meaningfully from the wired dn: its larger supplied paper arrangement and embedded radio should be considered together when deciding whether the extra cabinet size is useful.
This remains a print-only machine despite its touchscreen and enterprise feature set. It does not scan, copy or fax paper originals. HP identifies the US configuration as discontinued, so this is an assessment of an earlier package rather than a statement about current availability.
Look beyond the total paper number
The included inputs hold 1,200 ordinary sheets: 100 in the multipurpose tray and 550 in each of two cassettes. Further expansion is optional. Verify that the third tray is actually present and functional on the offered unit; accessories can become separated from an earlier printer.
The main cassette is shorter than Legal. Legal paper uses the multipurpose tray and the included larger third feeder, giving 650 supported Legal sheets in this assessment rather than the full ordinary-paper total. A buyer choosing the printer mainly for Legal documents should use that lower figure.
The original guide also assigns special materials to particular routes. Envelopes use Tray 1 with their separate ten-envelope limit, while label sheets use the main cassette or a suitable 550-sheet tray. The correct size, type and loading arrangement matter as much as available space.
Separate router Wi-Fi from Wi-Fi Direct
Exact x technical references establish embedded infrastructure Wi-Fi and genuine Wi-Fi Direct, in addition to Ethernet and computer USB. The shared guide’s discussion of an optional wireless accessory does not mean that the x lacks its documented embedded radio.
Infrastructure Wi-Fi joins a supported network. Wi-Fi Direct instead creates a peer-print connection that a compatible device joins. Check the intended application, firmware and available controls for that route rather than assuming every desktop feature carries across. NFC is a separate accessory question.
AirPrint and Mopria provide identified local-network options. Mobile printing is still printing, not scanning, and it does not establish the same private-job or media controls as a full desktop driver.
Use deliberate duplex and private-print settings
The x includes automatic two-sided printing. A compatible driver provides the documented duplex and binding choices, while special media and exact-size support still need their appropriate rules. The reviewed sections do not establish a complete size-specific duplex list, so the questionnaire does not invent one.
For private jobs, the original instructions explicitly describe a PIN assigned in Personal Job or Stored Job mode and entered during panel retrieval. That process is different from simply logging into the printer or encrypting stored data. A Personal Job also has retention limits, including loss after printing or power interruption.
Plan for a substantial commercial printer
The x is taller and heavier than the dn because the supplied package contains the additional feeder. Allow access for removing cassettes, opening service doors and reaching cables. Its touchscreen can manage jobs, but convenient panel access does not eliminate those physical requirements.
The recurring print recommendation is 2,000–10,000 pages per month, distinct from maximum duty. Evaluate toner condition and compatible replacements as part of the complete offer. HP’s disclosed dynamic-security and cartridge-chip requirements also matter when choosing supplies.
Choose it for the included capabilities you will use
Verify the electrical plate and present software compatibility rather than interpreting the regional voltage alternatives as one universal supply. The M555x makes sense for compatible commercial color printing when embedded wireless and the included third feeder solve real needs; a smaller wired package may be sufficient when they do not.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact M555 references specify up to 40 Letter and 38 A4 ppm. The shared user guide anomalously says 56 A4 ppm; that value is retained as a source discrepancy and not adopted. Recommended recurring printing is 2,000–10,000 pages, separate from 80,000 maximum duty.
Paper handling
x includes 100-sheet multipurpose plus 550-sheet main and 550-sheet third input, totaling 1,200. Main Tray 2 is shorter than Legal; Tray 1 plus included Tray 3 provide 650 Legal sheets. Other feeders remain optional. Letter/A4 ordinary input capacity is separate. Automatic print duplex is confirmed, but exact duplex sizes are not established by the sections read here, so size-specific duplex matching is not promised. Original envelope instruction uses Tray 1 only, up to ten; labels instead use Tray 2 or a suitable 550-sheet tray, not Tray 1.
Scanning arrangement
Print-only model, without scanner, copying or fax. A touchscreen, host USB or mobile application does not establish document capture.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact x technical references establish included computer USB, Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band infrastructure Wi-Fi and genuine Wi-Fi Direct. The shared guide’s optional 3100w accessory discussion does not cancel the exact x embedded-radio specification. NFC remains optional. AirPrint/Mopria local print support is separate from full desktop private-job controls; appropriate network, firmware and software required.
Supplies and declared yields
Four-color HP 212A/212X replacement family; original in-box and replacement yields differ and older production can differ. Verify compatible cartridges and remaining supplies. HP discloses dynamic security and cartridge-chip restrictions; no current price, cost-per-page or invented test is provided.
Software and support
Original Windows/macOS Job Storage instructions explicitly support Personal Job/Stored Job and four-digit PIN retrieval at the panel. This is independent of optional hard disk, encrypted storage or administrator authentication. Configure a compatible driver and actual job mode; a Personal Job is lost after printing or power loss. Mobile routes do not inherit desktop PIN or detailed finishing controls.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US product page identifies a discontinued #BGJ configuration. Technical electrical text nevertheless lists separate regional supplies and expressly says not dual voltage; the actual unit plate is required, so exact mains remains unknown. HP identifies this as a Class A commercial-environment device. Allow open tray, service-door and cable clearance, not only closed dimensions.
