M681f (J8A11A#BGJ)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

Workgroups handling repeated color output and configured folder capture with several paper sources.

The main tradeoff

It needs substantial operating room; Flow finishing and capture additions and wireless are separate.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it capture both sides of Legal originals in color and provide fax with 1,200 sheets ready?

Yes with the supplied f paper equipment, compatible configured Ethernet folder and supported fax setup.

Choose the supplied office station, not a family photograph

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M681f combines color output, document capture and fax with a cabinet-based paper package. The exact J8A11A configuration sits between a smaller starting arrangement and the more elaborate Flow finishing station.

It makes sense to compare the work repeated by a group: the paper loaded, originals arriving and files people need to retrieve. A large cabinet is useful when those functions stay busy, but it also needs a planned position and a practical route for installation.

Three sources give the supplied paper routine

The f combines a 100-sheet multipurpose input with two 550-sheet cassettes, giving 1,200 ordinary sheets. Its included cabinet distinguishes the complete arrangement from a smaller machine shown with optional equipment.

Think about how each source will be used. Separate regular stocks can reduce changes, while a clear loading convention helps several senders share one queue. Set the paper type and size to match the actual contents rather than leaving the printer to resolve inconsistent choices.

Automatic two-sided output is included, but the chosen stock and software still need to support the actual job. Test a complete report with the intended orientation and binding. Envelopes use their separate instructed bypass routine instead of inheriting the ordinary cassette or duplex assumptions.

Capture two-sided originals without borrowing Flow additions

The scanner provides a 150-sheet automatic document feeder for two-sided work and glass supporting originals through Legal size. The color capture capability is relevant when the office needs to preserve colored information electronically as well as produce paper documents.

The Flow keyboard, enhanced capture functions and finishing package belong to a different configuration. They should not be added simply because a brochure shows the larger family model. Compare the exact handling method when scanner performance is the main reason for buying.

Use representative originals when checking an earlier machine. Inspect the complete saved file for page order, edges, color and missing sheets. A successful first page does not show that a repeated mixed batch will follow the same routine reliably.

Make the destination part of the scanner decision

Network-folder capture needs a compatible reachable share with the correct path and access. Give the destination a clear panel name and confirm that the people using it can retrieve their files. The printer being visible on the network does not prove that a folder will accept a saved document.

Check the route again after changing a server, computer or password. Printing can continue while filing stops because credentials or permissions have changed. A maintained destination is more useful than a long list of possible services.

The computer USB printing connection and the walk-up memory-device route are separate arrangements. Check the actual software path before assuming a computer application can receive scans directly through the same USB cable used for printing.

Include connections and collection in the purchase check

Ethernet is the natural supplied shared-office connection. Wireless and Direct require appropriate optional hardware, so inspect the installed equipment when comparing an offer described broadly as network-ready. Fax needs its supported telephone arrangement and the required connection cable.

Decide where people collect output and how sensitive jobs will be handled. If a particular held-job or authentication routine matters, test submission and release with the intended software rather than treating a general security label as a complete workflow.

Inspect the earlier installation as a whole

Check current software support, repeated feeding, color output, scanner condition and supplies. Account for replacement components as well as cartridge condition. Historical declared yield does not tell you how much toner remains in the offered machine.

Measure loading, scanner-lid and service access in addition to the closed body. Confirm the regional electrical plate and commercial installation suitability. Choose the M681f when its supplied paper and document station fits recurring shared work, rather than accepting a larger configuration whose extras will rarely be used.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

HP US specifies 50 Letter monochrome/color pages per minute; regional original gives 47 A4. Recommended recurring output is 2,000–14,000 monthly, distinct from 100,000 maximum duty. Scanner image rates are separate; no measured timing is claimed.

Paper handling

Exact f supplies 100-sheet bypass plus two 550-sheet cassettes and cabinet, totaling 1,200 ordinary Letter/Legal/A4 sheets. US detailed three-tray specification and original matrix govern over abbreviated two-tray summary. Automatic output duplex is supplied; precise size-specific duplex limits are unestablished here. Envelopes use the instructed bypass up to 10, not the main cassettes. Flow z tower and stapling mailbox are not included.

Scanning arrangement

150-sheet automatic two-sided color feeder plus glass through Legal. Ordinary Letter/Legal/A4 fit documented scanner ranges. Exact f single-pass mechanism is not established here; the z walkaround is not transferred. Computer delivery uses configured compatible Ethernet network-folder access with correct path and permissions; direct computer USB scanning is unconfirmed. Flow EveryPage, pull-out keyboard and embedded OCR are separate.

Computer and mobile connections

Computer USB and Gigabit Ethernet are supplied, with analog fax requiring supported telephone setup and a separately obtained cable. Wi-Fi, Direct and NFC require optional Jetdirect equipment. Current software, network-share and fax compatibility need checking.

Supplies and declared yields

US 655A black/color and optional 657X supplies require exact regional matching. Declared yield is not remaining toner, actual usage or current running cost. Inspect transfer, fuser, collection and feeder components as part of the offered equipment.

Software and support

US current page lists minimum 500 GB secure HDD, while older original lists 320 GB; inspect actual revision rather than assuming all units have the later value. General security-user PIN wording does not establish the complete private print submission/release routine. Extra authentication and workflow software are separate decisions.

Electrical edition and setup

Earlier exact J8A11A#BGJ US reference, designated commercial Class A by HP. Body 25.87×25.87×43.62 inches, 135.4 lb; published maximum opening dimensions are larger. Regional voltage editions differ and are not dual voltage; inspect actual plate and installation access.
