HP M251nw: compact wireless color printing with manual duplex review

An earlier US color printer with USB, Ethernet, infrastructure Wi-Fi and one 150-sheet ordinary input; a touchscreen and front flash-drive port add print controls, not scanning.

LaserJet Pro 200 color M251nw (CF147A#BGJ; US 110–127-V, 60-Hz configuration)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible small office printing a recommended 250–1,500 color or black pages monthly and accepting attended two-sided handling.

The main tradeoff

Automatic duplex and scanning are absent. Legal input projects farther, legacy Wireless Direct is separate from standard Wi-Fi Direct, and current software and cloud-service availability need checking.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can an office print color Legal documents over infrastructure Wi-Fi with 150 ordinary sheets at 1,000 pages monthly?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible driver. Extend the tray for Legal and allow its additional projection; two-sided jobs require manual handling.

Will USB printing automatically turn Letter sheets for duplex output?

Fails. The original operating guide requires attended manual refeeding; no automatic duplexer is supplied.

Can its network connection scan originals to a computer?

Fails. This is a dedicated printer without scanner hardware. The stray Scan to USB menu text in the guide is not a capability.

Small-office color printing with an attended duplex routine

The HP LaserJet Pro 200 color M251nw is a dedicated color printer with computer USB, Ethernet and built-in wireless networking. Its 150-sheet tray and modest recurring-volume recommendation fit short office documents better than a large shared paper station. The deciding limitation is manual two-sided printing: a touchscreen and network connection do not add an automatic duplexer.

The exact US package is CF147A#BGJ, explicitly marked discontinued by HP. Its US electrical specification is 110–127 VAC at 60 Hz. Check the actual offered printer's plate and condition rather than assuming a regional higher-voltage unit is interchangeable.

HP declares up to 14 pages per minute for both black and color output on Letter and A4. Its recommended monthly print range is 250–1,500 pages, while maximum duty reaches 30,000. That much larger maximum is not a recommendation to sustain 30,000 pages every month, and these figures are not independent review measurements.

One tray handles ordinary office sizes and separate special media

The original operating guide lists Letter, Legal and A4 among the supported sizes. The single input holds up to 150 sheets on a 75-g/m², 20-lb ordinary-paper basis. Adjust both guides to the selected stock, keep all corners flat and stay below the tray's limit tabs.

Legal paper needs a physical extension. Hold the extension tab and pull the front outward before loading; the tray then projects approximately two inches beyond its shorter arrangement. A closed-body depth therefore does not describe the complete space needed for a Legal job.

Envelopes have a separate maximum of ten and their own orientation and weight limit. Labels, transparencies and thicker or glossy stock also have different capacities. Select the actual size and type in a compatible driver instead of applying the 150-sheet ordinary-paper figure to every material.

Follow the procedure for the actual computer driver

On Windows, the guide's two-sided procedure prints the first side, then asks the user to return the stack to the input and continue at the panel. Its Mac procedure also uses Manual Duplex, with its own refeeding instructions. Follow the procedure for the software actually in use; do not mix stack directions from the two workflows.

This is an attended process. It cannot satisfy a requirement for automatic duplex, even if an application offers a generic two-sided checkbox. If long duplex reports are a daily routine, a printer with an included automatic path is the more useful comparison.

The M251nw has no scanner, original-document feeder, copier or fax. The original guide accidentally includes a Scan to USB Drive menu item in its flash-drive printing section. That stray menu text does not override the exact print-only product scope or create scanner hardware.

Keep the network, mobile and flash-drive routes distinct

Infrastructure Wi-Fi supports compatible computer printing through the office network, while Ethernet provides a wired alternative. The exact source also names legacy Wireless Direct. This assessment preserves that feature's identity and does not classify it as standard Wi-Fi Direct.

AirPrint is documented for a suitable shared network, with a possible firmware requirement. The exact current technical reference also lists Mopria. These mobile routes do not automatically inherit the desktop driver's exact paper-capacity or finishing controls. Old internet-printing and business-app descriptions should not be treated as promises that their cloud services remain operational.

The front host socket instead accepts a flash drive for documented PDF or JPEG printing. It is separate from the rear computer USB connection. A compatible computer driver and a recognizable file on a flash drive are different ways of preparing a job.

Supplies, software and clearance finish the decision

The original US box lists introductory cartridges around 700 pages. The printer's technical reference lists CF210A black around 1,600, CF210X around 2,400 and CF211A, CF212A and CF213A colors around 1,800 each. Later supply listings can use different declarations; verify the exact replacement rather than treating an old figure as guaranteed output or remaining toner.

The body is approximately 15.94 by 17.83 by 10.43 inches and 41.4 pounds. With Legal input extended and the screen raised, published dimensions increase to about 20.15 inches deep and 13.9 high. Check current software support and leave loading and service access. Choose this earlier model for compatible modest-volume color printing when manual duplex and the small input are acceptable.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker rates up to 14 black or color Letter ppm and separately 14 A4 ppm. Recommended 250–1,500 pages monthly versus 30,000 maximum duty; no review benchmark or duplex throughput inferred.

Paper handling

Single 150-sheet input rated for 75-g/m², 20-lb ordinary stock, with explicit Letter/Legal/A4 sizes and actual tray-loading instructions. Legal input extends roughly two inches at front. Output 125 is separate. Manual Windows/Mac duplex requires refeeding with the respective driver procedure; automatic false. Envelopes up to ten, weight and orientation distinct; special-media capacities differ.

Scanning arrangement

Dedicated print-only scope: no scanner, copier, original feeder or fax. UG physical 66 stray Scan to USB Drive menu item is inconsistent and excluded, not hardware evidence.

Computer and mobile connections

Computer USB 2.0, host flash-drive USB, Ethernet 10/100 and infrastructure Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n are distinct included routes. Legacy HP Wireless Direct is not standard Wi-Fi Direct and receives no wifi_direct plan. Shared-network AirPrint/Mopria use applicable firmware; separate mobile plan does not inherit desktop media, PIN or duplex controls.

Supplies and declared yields

Original US box introductory black and colors approximately 700 pages. Printer technical reference replacement CF210A about 1,600, CF210X about 2,400, CF211A/CF212A/CF213A colors about 1,800. Later exact cartridge listings use different figures, including CF210AQ1 black 1,520; retain source date/package scope and verify the replacement declaration. No yield guarantee, remaining-toner or cost-per-page claim. Unrelated MDP text naming CE410 series is excluded.

Software and support

Use compatible current print driver; original full/driver-only and historical OS lists do not guarantee present availability. Windows manual duplex refeed differs from Mac instructions; follow the actual software. EWS administrator password is not PIN-held print release, which remains unknown. Historical ePrint, internet apps and cloud mentions are not present service guarantees. Front USB prints documented PDF/JPEG, no capture route.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact discontinued US CF147A#BGJ; actual US support and shop specify 110–127 VAC, 60 Hz, higher-voltage regional editions separate. Body 15.94 × 17.83 × 10.43 inches and 41.4 lb, cartridge basis unstated. Maximum with Legal input extended and touchscreen raised 15.94 × 20.15 × 13.9; package 50 lb not used as body. Allow loading, service and cable access.
