M255dwIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A small color-document queue within 150–2,500 recommended monthly pages using a verified computer driver or supported mobile network setup.

The main tradeoff

No scanner, copier or fax. Mobile duplex controls remain unconfirmed, and Legal loading adds tray projection beyond the closed body.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can M255dw automatically duplex Legal color documents through USB with 250 included normal sheets?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible HP computer driver. The original matrix checks Legal duplex and the included main tray; extend the tray correctly for Legal.

Can M255dw print color Letter through same-network AirPrint at a declared 22 ppm and 2,500 pages per month?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled, compatible mobile firmware and the Apple device on the same reachable network/subnet. This mobile routine does not borrow the computer driver automatic-duplex controls.

Does M255dw Wi-Fi Direct provide a computer document-scanning function?

Fails the selected scanning essential. M255dw is print-only; phone-camera scanning is separate and the Direct radio does not create a scanner.

Color printing with several ways to connect

The HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw is a print-only color laser with automatic two-sided printing, a 250-sheet paper tray and a color touchscreen. HP's exact US page identifies 7KW64A#BGJ and now marks it discontinued. This review covers that earlier US configuration and its documented 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz electrical arrangement.

It suits documents that need actual color output without requiring a scanner in the printer. The touchscreen, walk-up USB printing and phone-app advertising do not give the machine a scanner glass, document feeder, paper-original copier or fax. A phone's camera-scanning feature remains separate hardware and software.

The main tray and single-sheet slot have different jobs

The included normal paper capacity is the main tray's 250 sheets at 75 g/m². A separate one-sheet priority feed handles an occasional different sheet. It is not another full tray and is not added to the normal stack-capacity claim. HP's exact model table confirms that both inputs and the automatic duplex unit belong to M255dw; the related M255nw does not have the same duplex configuration.

The original paper matrix separately checks Letter, Legal and A4 in the main tray, priority slot and automatic duplex column. These ordinary sizes therefore have supported computer-driver automatic two-sided routes. For Legal in the main tray, release its extension latch and extend the tray front. HP says this projects approximately 2.2 inches beyond the printer front, which matters when placing the printer close to a walkway or shelf edge.

Paper type still matters. A size being duplex-capable does not approve labels, envelopes or every heavy stock for the same routine. The technical guide's separate media-type table excludes envelopes and labels from automatic duplexing. Select the correct media size and type in the actual compatible driver rather than relying on the default plain-paper setting.

For envelopes, the user guide specifies one in the priority slot or up to five in the main tray. Choose the correct envelope size, Envelope media type and the instructed manual-feed source. Load the envelope face up, with its short postage end leading. That is a separate one-sided special-media job.

Keep mobile printing separate from driver duplex controls

Standard connection choices include a computer USB port, wired Ethernet and dual-band infrastructure Wi-Fi. The walk-up USB socket is for compatible flash-drive printing; it is not the computer cable connection. HP's original technical guide and current US page disagree on the numeric Ethernet speed, so this review confirms Ethernet without promising a particular link rate.

AirPrint uses a printer and Apple device on the same network or subnet. That arrangement can use an Ethernet-connected printer while the phone joins the local wireless access point. The current exact US specifications also list Mopria certification. Suitable firmware, reachable network discovery and a compatible mobile device remain part of the setup.

Wi-Fi Direct is a different route that does not require the ordinary network or Internet connection. The original guide specifically documents Android devices with the HP Print Service or Mopria plugin. Enable Direct, select the printer's network name and follow its password or control-panel approval procedure. Some mobile devices need to reconnect to their ordinary network afterward.

The guide warns that Mac automatic duplex controls available with the HP driver might not be available through AirPrint. Accordingly, the documented computer-driver duplex route and mobile print route are kept separate here. A mobile-capable badge does not establish every two-sided control. A network password or pairing PIN also does not establish secure held-document PIN release.

Judge workload and toner under their stated conditions

HP rates one-sided Letter output up to 22 pages per minute in black and color, separately 21 A4. These are maker declarations, not our measurements or duplex speeds. Recommended monthly volume is 150–2,500 pages. The separate 40,000-page maximum duty cycle is not a sensible substitute for that recurring range.

The US package lists introductory toner at approximately 800 black pages and 700 color-composite pages. Replacement 206A cartridges are declared around 1,350 black and 1,250 color pages; 206X increases those declarations to about 3,150 and 2,450 respectively. HP states ISO/IEC 19798 and continuous-print conditions. Installed remaining toner and real operating cost cannot be read from those nominal yields.

HP also states that dynamic security uses a new or reused HP cartridge chip and may block non-HP chips through firmware updates. Check the actual consumables and intended supply plan. The body is about 15.4 inches wide, 16.5 deep and 9.7 high, weighing 32.6 pounds; loading and service clearance extend beyond that cabinet. A maintained M255dw can serve a small color-document queue when its specific paper, driver and network routine match the work.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker one-sided black/color maximum 22 Letter ppm, separately 21 A4. No measured or duplex-speed claim. Recommended monthly 150–2,500 is distinct from maximum duty 40,000.

Paper handling

250-sheet normal main-tray capacity at 75 g/m² for Letter/Legal/A4, separate single-sheet priority slot excluded from normal stack total. Actual original per-size table checks those sizes for both feeds and automatic duplex. Legal main-tray extension projects about 2.2 in forward. One envelope in slot or five in main tray, face up and postage end leading; instructed manual-feed size/type settings. No envelope or label duplex.

Scanning arrangement

Print-only color laser. No document scanner, glass, ADF, paper-original copier or fax. Phone app/camera scanning and color touchscreen do not establish scanner hardware.

Computer and mobile connections

Standard USB computer printing, included Ethernet or infrastructure 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi; separate Wi-Fi Direct. Exact current US page says Fast Ethernet, original technical guide says Gigabit, so numeric link rate not assigned. Walk-up USB host socket is flash printing, not computer input. Network AirPrint/Mopria require compatible same LAN/subnet; Direct route positively Android with HP Print Service or Mopria plugin.

Supplies and declared yields

US introductory approximately 800 black/700 color-composite pages. 206A W2110A black 1,350; W2111A cyan/W2112A yellow/W2113A magenta 1,250. 206X W2110X black 3,150, color W2111X/W2112X/W2113X 2,450. HP ISO/IEC 19798 continuous-print declaration, not installed remaining yield or price. Dynamic security requires new/reused HP chip and may block non-HP chips after firmware updates.

Software and support

Actual compatible computer HP driver supplies automatic Letter/Legal/A4 duplex; guide warns macOS AirPrint might not expose driver duplex controls. Mobile routes retain duplex unknown rather than borrow driver capability. Wi-Fi Direct pairing PIN is not document PIN release. HP JetAdvantage marketing alone is not included local secure-print hardware evidence.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US 7KW64A#BGJ M255dw discontinued, reviewed 110–127 VAC 50/60 Hz; separate 220–240 VAC version is not dual voltage. Body 15.4 W × 16.5 D × 9.7 H in, 32.6 lb, maximum opened 15.4 × 18.7 × 11.7 in. Legal tray projection and service access add clearance. Exact US box lists one USB cable; software download rather than in-box CD.
