Color LaserJet Pro M452dwIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

Prepared color office documents with a compatible computer driver, plus separately supported network or direct mobile printing.

The main tradeoff

No document capture. Mobile duplex remains unconfirmed, while local PIN-held jobs need additional USB storage.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the earlier M452dw automatically duplex color Legal documents over ordinary Wi-Fi with 300 included sheets?

Qualifies with a compatible HP computer driver on its supported 2.4 GHz network and earlier references enabled. Legal feed/duplex is explicit; the optional 550-sheet tray is excluded.

Is A4 automatic duplex through a USB desktop driver positively settled for this exact dw?

Qualifies with a compatible HP driver and earlier references enabled. The previously read primary M452 paper bulletin positively supports A4 for installed automatic-duplex models, and the exact dw hardware table confirms that mechanism. Mobile duplex is a separate unconfirmed route.

Color printing with a touchscreen and several real connection choices

The HP Color LaserJet Pro M452dw is useful when finished office documents need color output through a computer, a shared network or a supported direct mobile connection. The dw adds a 3-inch touchscreen, wireless hardware and front USB file printing to its included automatic duplexer. It remains a printer: it cannot scan a paper original, make a standalone photocopy or send an analog fax.

HP identifies the US version as CF394A#BGJ and explicitly labels it discontinued. The reviewed US electrical configuration uses 110–127 volts at 60Hz. HP separately lists a 220–240-volt edition and says the power supply is not dual voltage. A used or imported unit's actual rating matters more than the shared M452 family name.

Declared one-sided Letter output is up to 28 pages per minute in either black or color. The original guide separately lists 27 A4 pages per minute. These are manufacturer ratings, not an independent speed or print-quality test. HP recommends 750–4,000 monthly pages; its 50,000-page maximum duty rating describes a different limit.

Choose the job route before assuming all features travel together

The dw includes USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet and ordinary Wi-Fi. The original US wireless footnote specifies 2.4GHz operation. A compatible HP computer driver supplies the documented desktop duplex routine. USB connects a computer; the rear host USB used for optional job storage is a separate purpose.

AirPrint and Mopria are positively listed for network mobile printing. On the original AirPrint route, the printer and supported Apple device must be on the same suitable subnet. That can be an Ethernet-connected printer reached through the shared network or a printer joined to ordinary Wi-Fi.

Do not assume that the desktop driver's full settings appear in every mobile print dialog. The original macOS instructions specifically warn that automatic duplex might not be available through AirPrint. This assessment therefore keeps mobile duplex unconfirmed rather than combining the phone's printing protocol with another computer's driver controls.

The dw also genuinely supports Wi-Fi Direct, separately from ordinary Wi-Fi. The original guide describes supported Apple AirPrint and Android embedded-print devices using a direct connection without the office network or Internet. Enable Direct in the touchscreen's connection settings and use the correct printer identity. Device and app compatibility still matter. NFC requires a compatible NFC-printing mobile device; it is not a universal promise for every phone.

Paper capacity is 300 sheets in the normal configuration

A 50-sheet multipurpose feed and 250-sheet cassette are included. Both feeds positively support ordinary Letter, Legal and A4. The advertised 850-sheet capacity requires buying a separate 550-sheet feeder, so it is not included in the 300-sheet assessment. Loading a different size or special stock reduces the paper available for the current job.

Letter and Legal automatic duplex are explicit in the exact US dw specifications. For A4, HP's separate M452/M477/M377 paper bulletin positively checks automatic duplex for models with that mechanism installed. The exact original dw column confirms the installed duplexer, so this independently establishes A4 duplex as well. The store metric list's conflicting dn-only annotation is retained in the evidence rather than silently borrowed or treated as a hardware exclusion.

For confirmed desktop duplex, match size, type and source in the HP driver and choose the binding edge. Preprinted cassette stock changes orientation: the original tray-2 instructions use face up, top toward the printer for simplex, and face down, top away for duplex. Legal paper extends the cassette approximately two inches beyond its ordinary position.

Envelope batches use a separate one-sided workflow. In the compatible driver select the real envelope size, Envelope media type and intended feed. Both paths load envelopes face up with the short postage end leading. Tray 1 permits a maximum 5mm stack, approximately four to six; tray 2 permits ten. These limits do not describe a 300-envelope input or automatic envelope duplex.

Front USB printing and private jobs are different features

The touchscreen model supports front USB file printing. The original instructions list PDF and JPEG, among other file types, while the US product explains Word and PowerPoint printing with Latin-font and document-version restrictions. Inspect the intended file rather than expecting identical rendering for every office document.

One generic menu in that printing section says Scan to USB Drive. The exact product's functions are print only and no scanner exists in the documented hardware, so that stray menu text is not treated as a capture feature.

For local stored jobs with optional PIN protection, HP requires a separately purchased dedicated rear USB 2.0 drive. The original manual specifies at least 16GB free, formatting during setup and a compatible driver; Universal Print Driver users need version 5.9.0 or later under that original instruction. Removing the drive disables job storage. The standard box therefore fails an included-PIN requirement. Old cloud private-print marketing is not a promise of present service operation.

Supplies and space still determine practicality

The supplied introductory four cartridges are approximately 1,200 pages each. US 410A replacements are approximately 2,300 each; 410X black is approximately 6,500 and each 410X color approximately 5,000 under HP's ISO/IEC 19798 continuous-printing declarations. Actual documents change yield, and remaining toner or a live cost per page is unknown.

Closed height is approximately 11.6 inches and with-cartridge weight approximately 41.7lb. Width and depth differ slightly between original and current sources and remain unconfirmed for strict limits. Leave room for the extended Legal tray, open doors and cartridge drawer. The dw fits connected color printing, provided the intended app, paper and duplex combination is actually supported; document capture requires a different machine.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker one-sided Letter rate up to 28 ppm in black or color, separately 27 A4 in the exact original model columns. Recommended monthly printing 750–4,000 pages is separate from 50,000 maximum duty. No measured review speed or inferred duplex throughput.

Paper handling

Included 50-sheet multipurpose tray 1 and 250-sheet tray 2, total 300 ordinary sheets, with Letter/Legal/A4 positively listed for both feeds. Optional 550-sheet tray 3 is excluded; 850 is the expanded maximum. Legal extends the tray approximately 51 mm (2 inches). Ordinary media supported 60–176 g/m² in tray 1 and 60–163 g/m² in tray 2/automatic duplex; named glossy/postcard exceptions are not universal duplex permissions. Envelopes use selected actual size, Envelope type and chosen feed in a compatible driver, face up with the short postage end leading: tray 1 at most 5-mm stack (about four to six), tray 2 ten. HP’s previously read M452/M477/M377 paper bulletin separately checks A4 for automatic duplex models; with exact dw duplex hardware confirmed, it establishes A4 duplex despite the store metric list’s dn-only annotation.

Scanning arrangement

Exact print-only color laser with no scanner, flatbed, document feeder, standalone copier or fax. Generic scan-driver wording and an erroneous Scan to USB Drive item in the common walk-up-print instructions do not establish capture hardware.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact M452dw includes USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, 2.4-GHz infrastructure Wi-Fi, genuine Wi-Fi Direct and compatible NFC printing, plus touchscreen/front walk-up USB printing. Compatible computer-driver Letter/Legal/A4 automatic duplex uses exact installed-duplex hardware plus HP’s positively scoped M452 media bulletin. Separate network or supported direct AirPrint routes keep mobile duplex unknown.

Supplies and declared yields

US 410A replacements CF410A black, CF411A cyan, CF412A yellow and CF413A magenta approximately 2,300 pages each; 410X CF410X black approximately 6,500 and CF411X/CF412X/CF413X color approximately 5,000 each. Maker yield declarations use ISO/IEC 19798 continuous printing; actual content changes yield. Supplied introductory four cartridges approximately 1,200 pages each are separate from replacements. Remaining toner and live price per page unknown.

Software and support

Documented automatic duplex routine uses a compatible HP computer driver. The original macOS section warns that the option might not be available through AirPrint; separate mobile plans therefore leave automatic duplex unknown. Included PIN release is false: optional job storage requires purchase of a dedicated rear USB 2.0 flash drive, original manual at least 16 GB free space, formatting and compatible driver setup. If using Universal Print Driver the original minimum is 5.9.0. Personal Job/Stored Job PIN is not an administrator password. No promise that historical cloud services still operate.

Electrical edition and setup

Reviewed exact US low-voltage 110–127-V 60-Hz configuration; separate 220–240-V 50/60-Hz option-code editions are explicitly not dual voltage. Closed height approximately 11.6 inches and with-cartridge weight approximately 41.7 lb agree across sources. US width/depth 16.2/18.5 inches differ from original 413.6/472.3 mm (16.28/18.59 inches), so strict width/depth remain unknown. The original fully open depth is 44.27 inches; closed dimensions are not total operating clearance. Optional tray changes height and weight.
