Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the documented US low-voltage M454dn automatically duplex color A4 documents through USB with 300 included sheets?
Qualifies with a compatible HP driver and earlier references enabled. The exact W1Y44A specification separately confirms A4 in both feeds and the duplexer; optional 550-sheet expansion is excluded.
Explore this need in the finder →Does it include a wireless connection for desktop printing?
Fails the included Wi-Fi requirement. Original exact dn column explicitly excludes the radio, Wi-Fi Direct and BLE; those belong to different suffixes.
Explore this need in the finder →Does a standard M454dn satisfy local PIN release without buying storage?
Fails included PIN release. The original guide and US datasheet require a separate dedicated USB device and compatible setup, including at least 16 GB free in the original manual.
Explore this need in the finder →For color documents from a wired computer arrangement
The HP Color LaserJet Pro M454dn is a sensible reference for an office needing prepared color documents printed automatically on both sides through USB or wired Ethernet. It includes 300 ordinary sheets and the turning mechanism. Its limits are the print-only hardware, absence of a wireless radio and additional storage required for local PIN-held jobs.
This assessment specifically covers the documented US low-voltage configuration of W1Y44A. HP's original US datasheet supplies the exact dn column, North American 414-series supplies and 110–127-volt, 60-Hz electrical option. A regional option suffix is not invented or borrowed from the dw. Separate 220–240-volt editions exist, and HP states that the supply is not dual voltage.
This is an earlier model reference, not a verified current offer. HP declares up to 28 one-sided Letter pages per minute in black or color, separately 27 A4 in the original exact-model table. These are manufacturer figures, not measured results here. The recommended monthly range is 750–4,000 pages; the separate 50,000-page maximum duty rating does not replace that recommendation.
Use the included duplexer with the appropriate paper and driver
The machine supplies a 50-sheet multipurpose feed and 250-sheet cassette. The original tray instructions use 75-g/m² paper. HP's exact W1Y44A specification positively lists Letter, Legal and A4 in both feeds and the automatic duplexer, so the ordinary arrangement can supply 300 sheets of the selected supported size when both trays actually hold it.
A separate 550-sheet tray expands input to 850. That accessory is excluded from the standard capacity and also changes height and weight. A loaded tray of envelopes or another paper size cannot simultaneously count toward an ordinary-page run.
With the compatible HP computer driver, select the loaded paper's size, type and source. The original Windows routine enables two-sided output in Finishing; the HP macOS routine selects a Two-Sided binding option. Check the intended page-turning edge for landscape documents or bound reports.
Letterhead loading also changes by routine. The original cassette instructions use face up, top toward the printer for simplex, and face down, top away for duplex. Legal paper extends tray 2 approximately two inches beyond its usual position.
For envelopes, follow the separate driver workflow: actual envelope size, Envelope media type and Manual feed source. The guide permits tray 1 or tray 2 and explicitly states up to ten envelopes in tray 1. Both load face up with the short postage end leading. This does not establish a numeric tray-2 envelope capacity or a two-sided envelope routine.
Network mobile printing does not add wireless hardware
The exact dn has USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet. Its control panel is a two-line display. The original hardware table positively excludes Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth Low Energy and front walk-up file printing from this suffix. Those dw features must not be assigned to it because they appear elsewhere in a family brochure.
AirPrint and Mopria are nevertheless listed for supported network printing. A mobile device on the same suitable subnet can reach the Ethernet-connected printer through that shared network. The printer itself does not need a Wi-Fi radio for that arrangement.
The original macOS guide warns that the HP driver's automatic duplex feature might not be available through AirPrint. Accordingly, the supported mobile plan leaves duplex unconfirmed instead of borrowing another computer's controls. Verify an essential mobile-plus-duplex combination in the actual intended app. Historical cloud-service and ROAM names are not a promise of present operation.
Private jobs and supply restrictions need deliberate setup
PIN-held local jobs require a dedicated rear USB 2.0 storage device. The original manual specifies at least 16GB free, formatting during setup and a compatible driver; its Universal Print Driver minimum is 5.9.0. After that optional setup, Personal Job or Stored Job can request a PIN at release. Removing the drive disables storage, so the standard box fails an included-PIN requirement.
The North American 414A black replacement is approximately 2,400 pages, while each standard color is approximately 2,100. High-yield 414X black is approximately 7,500 and each color approximately 6,000 under HP's ISO/IEC 19798 declarations. Introductory black is approximately 1,200 pages and introductory color approximately 1,200 composite pages under continuous-printing conditions.
Supplies are region-specific; 415 or 416 cartridges are not US substitutes. The original manual also describes dynamic security and chip authentication that may prevent cartridges using non-HP chips from working. Firmware changes can affect acceptance. Separate administrator Cartridge Policy and Cartridge Protection settings should not be confused with PIN release or a compulsory supply subscription.
Keep enough room to use and maintain it
The approximately 11.6-inch closed height and 41.7lb with-cartridge weight agree across sources. Original and current width/depth figures differ slightly, so strict limits remain unconfirmed. Open trays, Legal extension and cartridge access need additional room. Choose this documented wired color-duplex configuration when those routines fit; paper capture or native wireless requires different hardware.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Maker one-sided Letter rate up to 28 ppm in black or color, separately 27 A4 in the exact original model table. Recommended monthly printing 750–4,000 pages is separate from 50,000 maximum duty. No independent speed, quality or noise test; two-sided images/minute is not substituted for Letter pages/minute.
Paper handling
Included 50-sheet multipurpose tray 1 and 250-sheet tray 2, total 300 ordinary 75-g/m² sheets. Letter/Legal/A4 feeds and automatic-duplex sizes are established for each exact model. Optional 550-sheet tray 3 excluded; 850 requires the accessory. Legal extends tray 2 approximately 51 mm (two inches). Original envelope routine permits tray 1 or 2, positively up to ten in tray 1; no numeric tray-2 envelope capacity inferred. Use actual size, Envelope type, Manual feed source and face-up loading with short postage end leading. Ordinary tray-1 range 60–176 g/m², tray 2/duplex 60–163; named glossy/postcard exceptions are not universal duplex permission.
Scanning arrangement
Exact color print-only laser, no scanner, flatbed, ADF, standalone copier or fax. A color touchscreen is a control interface and does not establish color scanning.
Computer and mobile connections
Documented US low-voltage M454dn W1Y44A has USB 2.0/Gigabit Ethernet, two-line panel and no radio, Wi-Fi Direct, BLE or front walk-up printing. Exact dn specifications establish Letter/Legal/A4 duplex and feeds with compatible HP computer driver. Separate same-subnet AirPrint/Mopria plan keeps mobile automatic duplex unknown.
Supplies and declared yields
Documented US/North American configuration uses 414A W2020A black about 2,400 pages, W2021A cyan/W2022A yellow/W2023A magenta about 2,100 each; 414X W2020X black about 7,500 and W2021X/W2022X/W2023X color about 6,000 each, HP ISO/IEC 19798 declarations. Introductory black about 1,200 and color composite (C/M/Y) about 1,200 under ISO/IEC 19798 continuous printing. Supplies are region-specific; 415/416 are not US substitutes. Actual content, yield and remaining toner vary; no live cost per page.
Software and support
Compatible HP computer driver supplies the documented automatic-duplex routine. Original macOS section warns automatic duplex may not be available through AirPrint, so mobile plans keep duplex unknown. Included PIN release is false: optional job storage requires separately purchased dedicated rear USB 2.0 storage with at least 16 GB free, formatting and a compatible driver; original UPD minimum 5.9.0. Dynamic security and chip authentication may prevent supplies with non-HP chips from working; firmware changes can alter acceptance. Cartridge Policy/Cartridge Protection are separate administrator features, originally off by default. Historical cloud/ROAM services are not promised.
Electrical edition and setup
Reviewed documented US low-voltage 110–127-V 60-Hz configuration; separate 220–240-V 50/60-Hz option-code editions are explicitly not dual voltage. Original user guide closed 413.6×472×295.7 mm differs from US datasheet/current product sheet 16.2×18.5×11.6 inches (412×469×295 mm). Strict width/depth unknown; rounded height 11.6 and with-cartridge weight 41.7 lb agree. Original fully open depth 44.27 inches differs from datasheet maximum 25.6; body fit does not guarantee operating or service clearance. Optional tray changes height and weight.
