Color LaserJet Pro M454dwIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

Prepared office color documents through a supported computer driver, plus separate network or direct mobile printing when its actual app supports the needed options.

The main tradeoff

No scanner or fax. Mobile duplex is unconfirmed, PIN-held jobs need additional USB storage and regional cartridges must meet the documented HP-chip restrictions.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the earlier M454dw duplex color A4 documents through ordinary Wi-Fi with 300 included sheets?

Qualifies with a compatible HP computer driver on the supported 2.4/5 GHz network and earlier references enabled. The exact US source positively lists A4 in both feeds and the duplexer; optional expansion is excluded.

For color output where wireless placement matters

The HP Color LaserJet Pro M454dw gives prepared office documents several practical ways to reach a color print engine: USB, wired Ethernet, ordinary dual-band Wi-Fi and a supported direct mobile connection. It includes an automatic duplexer, 300 ordinary sheets and a 2.7-inch touchscreen. It is still print only, with no scanner, document feeder, standalone copier or fax.

The exact US product is W1Y45A#BGJ, explicitly marked discontinued by HP. The reviewed configuration uses 110–127 volts at 60Hz. The separate 220–240-volt regional editions are not interchangeable universal-voltage units. Check the actual rating and regional supplies when considering an older machine.

HP declares up to 28 one-sided Letter pages per minute in black or color, separately 27 A4 in the original model table. This review does not claim measured speed or print quality. The recommended monthly range is 750–4,000 pages; the 50,000-page maximum duty figure is a separate rating.

Keep ordinary Wi-Fi and direct mobile printing distinct

For a shared computer queue, the dw includes Gigabit Ethernet and 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi. A compatible HP computer driver supplies the documented settings for automatic two-sided output, paper source and media type. USB 2.0 supports a direct computer arrangement, and the US box lists a USB cable.

AirPrint and Mopria are listed for supported network mobile devices. The original AirPrint instructions use the same suitable subnet as the Apple device. A printer connected by Ethernet can be reached through that shared network just as a printer joined to ordinary Wi-Fi can.

However, automatic duplex in the HP macOS driver might not be available through AirPrint, according to the original guide. Consequently, this assessment does not promise a mobile-protocol-plus-duplex combination by borrowing a desktop driver's controls. Check the actual print dialog if both are essential.

Wi-Fi Direct is a separate included capability. The original manual specifically supports compatible Apple devices using AirPrint or HP Smart and Android devices using supported embedded printing or HP Smart without requiring the office network or Internet. Enable Direct at the panel and identify the correct printer. This route confirms supported direct printing, with its own duplex limits left unconfirmed. Bluetooth Low Energy is not treated as another universal document-printing protocol.

The included trays support ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 duplex

The exact US media table positively lists Letter, Legal and A4 in both ordinary feeds and the automatic duplexer. Input is 50 sheets in the multipurpose tray and 250 in the cassette. The original cassette capacity uses 75-g/m² paper. Loading both with the selected ordinary size supports 300 sheets for that arrangement.

HP's advertised 850-sheet maximum needs the optional 550-sheet feeder. It is not part of the standard capacity here. Special stock or a different loaded size also cannot be counted again as ordinary paper for a particular job.

Match the actual size, type and source in the compatible HP driver, then select the appropriate two-sided binding edge. For preprinted cassette stock, the original guide uses face up, top toward the printer for one-sided output, and face down, top away for two-sided. Legal paper extends tray 2 approximately two inches.

Envelope printing is a separate routine with the actual envelope size, Envelope type and Manual feed source. The guide permits either feed and explicitly allows up to ten envelopes in tray 1. Load face up, short postage end leading. It does not supply a numeric tray-2 envelope capacity or an automatic envelope-duplex promise.

Front file printing does not supply included PIN storage

The touchscreen model supports walk-up file printing from a front USB drive. The original routine lists PDF, JPEG and several print-ready or office file formats, then offers controls including two-sided output, tray selection, copies and quality. The original US brochure says an administrator must enable that port before use. Verify the intended file and settings rather than assuming all office documents render identically.

Rear USB job storage has a different purpose. It requires buying a dedicated USB 2.0 device with at least 16GB free under the original guide, formatting it and using a compatible driver. The original Universal Print Driver minimum is 5.9.0. Personal Job or Stored Job can then request PIN release, but removing the device disables storage. The included configuration therefore fails a ready-to-use PIN requirement.

Check region, cartridge chips and working space

The US configuration uses 414 supplies. Standard black is approximately 2,400 pages and each standard color approximately 2,100; high-yield black is approximately 7,500 and each high-yield color approximately 6,000 under HP's ISO/IEC 19798 declarations. Introductory black is approximately 1,200 pages and color approximately 1,200 composite pages. Actual content changes yield, and no live cost per page is established.

The exact US page describes dynamic security: cartridges need a new or reused HP chip, and firmware updates can block non-HP chips that previously worked. A reused HP chip can permit reused, refilled or remanufactured cartridges. That restriction is distinct from an administrator's optional Cartridge Policy or Cartridge Protection settings, and it is not treated as a compulsory subscription.

Closed height is approximately 11.6 inches and with-cartridge weight approximately 41.7lb. Width and depth differ slightly across the original and current sources, so strict limits remain unconfirmed. Leave room for extended trays, the cartridge drawer and other access. The dw fits connected color printing when the intended route and media agree; scanning a paper original needs different hardware.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker one-sided Letter rate up to 28 ppm in black or color, separately 27 A4 in the exact original model table. Recommended monthly printing 750–4,000 pages is separate from 50,000 maximum duty. No independent speed, quality or noise test; two-sided images/minute is not substituted for Letter pages/minute.

Paper handling

Included 50-sheet multipurpose tray 1 and 250-sheet tray 2, total 300 ordinary 75-g/m² sheets. Letter/Legal/A4 feeds and automatic-duplex sizes are established for each exact model. Optional 550-sheet tray 3 excluded; 850 requires the accessory. Legal extends tray 2 approximately 51 mm (two inches). Original envelope routine permits tray 1 or 2, positively up to ten in tray 1; no numeric tray-2 envelope capacity inferred. Use actual size, Envelope type, Manual feed source and face-up loading with short postage end leading. Ordinary tray-1 range 60–176 g/m², tray 2/duplex 60–163; named glossy/postcard exceptions are not universal duplex permission.

Scanning arrangement

Exact color print-only laser, no scanner, flatbed, ADF, standalone copier or fax. A color touchscreen is a control interface and does not establish color scanning.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact US M454dw W1Y45A#BGJ includes USB 2.0/Gigabit Ethernet/dual-band 2.4/5-GHz Wi-Fi and genuine Wi-Fi Direct, touchscreen and administrator-enabled front file printing. Compatible HP computer-driver Letter/Legal/A4 automatic duplex is separate from same-network AirPrint/Mopria and supported direct AirPrint routes; mobile duplex remains unknown.

Supplies and declared yields

Documented US/North American configuration uses 414A W2020A black about 2,400 pages, W2021A cyan/W2022A yellow/W2023A magenta about 2,100 each; 414X W2020X black about 7,500 and W2021X/W2022X/W2023X color about 6,000 each, HP ISO/IEC 19798 declarations. Introductory black about 1,200 and color composite (C/M/Y) about 1,200 under ISO/IEC 19798 continuous printing. Supplies are region-specific; 415/416 are not US substitutes. Actual content, yield and remaining toner vary; no live cost per page.

Software and support

Compatible HP computer driver supplies the documented automatic-duplex routine. Original macOS section warns automatic duplex may not be available through AirPrint, so mobile plans keep duplex unknown. Included PIN release is false: optional job storage requires separately purchased dedicated rear USB 2.0 storage with at least 16 GB free, formatting and a compatible driver; original UPD minimum 5.9.0. Dynamic security and chip authentication may prevent supplies with non-HP chips from working; firmware changes can alter acceptance. Cartridge Policy/Cartridge Protection are separate administrator features, originally off by default. Historical cloud/ROAM services are not promised. Exact current US dw dynamic-security statement allows new or reused HP chips; firmware can block non-HP chips that previously worked, while reused HP chips can enable reused, remanufactured or refilled cartridges. US box lists USB cable; manufacturer says Internet is required for setup and printer software is obtained online, not from included software media.

Electrical edition and setup

Reviewed documented US low-voltage 110–127-V 60-Hz configuration; separate 220–240-V 50/60-Hz option-code editions are explicitly not dual voltage. Original user guide closed 413.6×472×295.7 mm differs from US datasheet/current product sheet 16.2×18.5×11.6 inches (412×469×295 mm). Strict width/depth unknown; rounded height 11.6 and with-cartridge weight 41.7 lb agree. Original fully open depth 44.27 inches differs from datasheet maximum 25.6; body fit does not guarantee operating or service clearance. Optional tray changes height and weight.
