M277dwIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A modest color-document office needing a verified computer or network setup, one-sided feeder scans and separate analog fax service.

The main tradeoff

The feeder does not scan both sides automatically. Exact duplex-print sizes, glass size, body width/weight and local PIN-held release remain unconfirmed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can M277dw use USB for color printing, one-sided Legal color feeder scans, copying and fax at 2,500 monthly pages with 150 print sheets?

Qualifies with earlier models enabled, actual compatible HP computer print/scan software and a separate suitable configured analog fax line. Legal feeder scans are documented; this case does not request automatic duplex scans or a specific duplex-print size.

Can M277dw automatically scan both sides of Legal originals through the feeder over office Wi-Fi?

Fails the selected duplex scan route. The exact scanner specification says no duplex ADF scanning; automatic print duplex and manual two-sided copy menus do not add it.

Can a compatible Apple device print Letter pages through the included Wi-Fi Direct using AirPrint without a router?

Qualifies for the original guide direct AirPrint print routine after Wi-Fi Direct is enabled, with earlier models allowed. This case does not request network scan delivery or mobile automatic duplex.

A small color-office configuration with several connection choices

The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw is an earlier color laser for printing, copying, color scanning and analog fax. The exact US product page identifies B3Q11A#BGJ and marks it discontinued. This review covers its documented 110–127-volt, 60-Hz configuration. HP separately specifies a 220–240-volt version and explicitly says these products are not dual voltage.

The original dw model column includes USB 2.0, Ethernet, infrastructure Wi-Fi and genuine Wi-Fi Direct with NFC printing. That gives a small office several practical arrangements: one computer over USB, shared printing over Ethernet, or a compatible 2.4-GHz wireless network. The original table calls Ethernet 10/100/1000, while an exact US description inconsistently calls the same numeric connection Fast Ethernet. This review retains the included wired network connection without promising a particular negotiated speed.

HP specifies up to 19 Letter pages per minute in black or color, separately 18 A4. Recommended monthly printing is 250–2,500 pages. The 30,000-page maximum duty cycle is a distinct limit, rather than a routine monthly workload recommendation. These are maker specifications; this review does not claim to have timed the printer.

Two paper feeds do not mean two paper stacks

The main paper tray holds 150 ordinary sheets. Tray 1 is a single-sheet priority slot: the original instructions tell the user to insert and hold one sheet while the printer takes it into the paper path. That slot does not add another ordinary stack to the included capacity. The matching total is therefore 150 sheets, rather than 151.

Letter, Legal and A4 are documented input sizes. Legal requires extending the main tray approximately two inches beyond the front of the printer, which changes the working depth on a shelf. Adjust the guides to the actual sheet and keep the stack below its fill marks. A computer application's selected page size and the loaded paper should agree.

The dw configuration positively includes automatic print duplex, and the guide documents its compatible computer-driver controls. The material read does not establish a separate approved-size list for that duplex path. This review therefore confirms the function while leaving specific duplex paper sizes unresolved. A particular sheet's ability to enter the printer is not treated as proof that it can automatically travel through the duplexer.

For an occasional envelope, insert one face up into the priority slot following the guide's right-edge-first instruction and select the correct size and Envelope type. The main tray can also take envelopes, but HP warns that more than five can cause jams. Ordinary-sheet capacity and envelope quantity are different loading rules.

Automatic print duplex does not add a duplex scanner

The original guide and exact scanner specifications establish a 50-sheet document feeder. Its supported original range is 4 by 6 to 8.5 by 14 inches, accommodating Letter, Legal and A4. It scans in color as well as monochrome. The same exact technical specification explicitly says no duplex ADF scanning, so this printer does not qualify for automatic two-sided or single-pass feeder scans.

The guide's two-sided copy procedure requires the user to present successive original sides on the glass. A two-sided copy menu is consequently not evidence of an automatic duplex feeder. The flatbed itself is confirmed, but its separate exact size limit was not established in the material read. Legal scanning is confirmed through the feeder, without borrowing that maximum for the glass.

With actual compatible HP Scan software, a connected computer can initiate a scan and save it to a file. Check the intended operating system and the full scan installation before relying on it. A functioning print driver does not by itself verify the scanning application.

Choose a network workflow or a nearby direct-print workflow

Network Scan to Email requires configured SMTP details and any required authentication. Scan to Network Folder needs a working shared destination and credentials. Either Ethernet or infrastructure Wi-Fi can provide the network arrangement, but those delivery services still need their own setup and a successful test.

AirPrint and Mopria are documented mobile-print options on the local network. The original guide also explicitly supports an Apple device using AirPrint over Wi-Fi Direct after that feature is enabled. That direct connection is useful for a nearby compatible device, but this review does not attach the office's SMTP or shared-folder scan routine to it. Mobile printing also does not inherit computer-driver duplex controls that the guide says might be unavailable through AirPrint.

Fax uses the separate analog telephone connection. Configure the correct line arrangement, answer settings and fax identification, then run the fax test. Neither wireless printing nor the Ethernet cable supplies telephone fax service.

Supplies and physical fit need an exact check

The 201A replacements are CF400A black, approximately 1,500 pages, and CF401A/CF402A/CF403A colors, approximately 1,400 composite color pages. The 201X alternatives are approximately 2,800 black or 2,300 composite color pages. HP specifies ISO/IEC 19798 continuous-print conditions. Those figures do not reveal remaining toner in an installed cartridge.

The body depth of about 16.4 inches and height of 12.7 inches agree across the original and current sources. Width and weight conflict, so they remain unconfirmed here. Verify the actual unit and service clearance. Hardware PIN-held print release was also not established; historical cloud-private-print promotion is insufficient to promise it. The M277dw is a useful reference for modest color-office work when its simplex scanner and verified setup meet the actual requirements.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original maker maximum 19 Letter ppm black/color, separately 18 A4. Recommended monthly printing 250–2,500 differs from maximum duty 30,000. Original guide scan speed is explicitly subject to change; scanner ppm are not print rates.

Paper handling

150-sheet main tray is normal included capacity. Priority Tray 1 is one hand-fed sheet, excluded from ordinary stack total. Letter, Legal and A4 input positive. Main tray extends approximately 51 mm/2 inches forward for Legal. Automatic computer-driver print duplex positive, but exact approved duplex-size list not established: automatic_print_duplex true with empty duplex_sizes applies only when paper size is flexible. Envelope priority-slot procedure face up/right edge inserted and held; main tray maximum five envelopes per original warning. Choose correct driver size/type. No envelope duplex promise.

Scanning arrangement

Included 50-sheet feeder with 4×6–8.5×14-inch original range supports one-sided Letter/Legal/A4 color scans. Exact maker specification explicitly no duplex ADF; original two-sided copy routine manually presents original sides on glass. Flatbed hardware positive, separate exact glass size unknown, route flatbed[].

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB 2.0, Ethernet, 2.4-GHz infrastructure Wi-Fi and genuine Wi-Fi Direct/NFC from original dw column. Ethernet numeric rate not promised because exact US calls 10/100/1000 Fast Ethernet while original says 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN. Computer scans require actual compatible HP Scan software. Network SMTP or folder delivery needs configured working services. Direct peer plan supplies documented printing only; separate analog fax service required.

Supplies and declared yields

201A CF400A black approximately 1,500 pages and CF401A/CF402A/CF403A approximately 1,400 composite CMY. 201X CF400X black approximately 2,800 and CF401X/CF402X/CF403X approximately 2,300 composite CMY; ISO/IEC 19798 continuous printing. Box nominal black 1,500 and introductory composite color 700. Remaining installed toner unknown.

Software and support

Original HP driver automatic duplex confirmed; original guide says AirPrint may not expose driver duplex controls. Original Direct chapter explicitly supports Apple AirPrint on a compatible direct-connected device; no named Direct Mopria promise. Local hardware PIN-held release unknown; historical cloud-private-print promotion, administration password and scan-profile PIN are not sufficient evidence.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US B3Q11A#BGJ earlier discontinued configuration. Reviewed 110–127 VAC 60 Hz; separate 220–240 VAC 50 Hz hardware, not dual voltage. Original width 392 mm/15.4 in versus current US 16.5 in and original 18.3 kg/40.3 lb versus US 35.9 lb unresolved => width and weight null. Depth 16.4 and height 12.7 in agree; open depth 39.4 and height 22.8 in are service envelope, not closed body.
