Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw (T6B82A#BGJ; US 110–127-V configuration)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible small office printing a recommended 150–2,500 pages monthly and saving one-sided feeder originals through full computer software.

The main tradeoff

The feeder does not scan both sides automatically. Panel folder/email jobs have separately documented glass routes, mobile controls differ from desktop controls, and actual supplies/software need checking.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can infrastructure Wi-Fi support color Legal duplex printing and one-sided color Legal feeder scans at 1,000 monthly pages with a 250-sheet cassette?

Qualifies with compatible full computer software and suitable telephone service for fax. The feeder is one-sided; the 250-sheet cassette and one-sheet priority slot are distinct inputs.

Can USB scanning automatically capture both sides of Letter originals?

Fails. Exact specifications explicitly say no duplex ADF scanning. Automatic print duplex does not supply automatic input capture.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can a compatible Android Mopria device print through enabled Wi-Fi Direct without an office access point?

Qualifies for the documented peer print routine after choosing the correct printer and connection method. It does not establish scanner access or every desktop finishing control.

Color output and one-sided capture fit together

The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw combines color printing, copying, scanning and analog fax with automatic two-sided printing. Its practical limit is on incoming paperwork: the 50-page feeder scans one side, rather than automatically capturing both sides. That makes it useful for a small office receiving single-sided originals, with a different choice needed for routine automatic duplex scanning.

The reviewed US package is T6B82A#BGJ. HP's exact US technical reference specifies 110–127 VAC at 50/60 Hz and currently labels the product not available. That does not establish an official discontinued notice or present stock elsewhere. Check the actual unit's plate, supplies and condition.

Published printing reaches 22 Letter pages per minute in black or color, separately 21 ppm on A4. HP recommends 150–2,500 printed pages monthly; maximum duty of 40,000 is a different limit. Neither the display's color nor a color scanning rate should be substituted for printed-page throughput.

Automatic print duplex does not turn incoming originals

The original model table separately marks automatic print duplex and the document feeder. Exact scanner specifications explicitly say no duplex ADF scanning. A two-sided copy menu can control the output sheet without proving a two-sided input mechanism.

Letter, Legal and A4 originals fit the confirmed feeder range, with an 8.5-by-14-inch maximum. Optical capture is specified up to 300 dpi through the feeder versus up to 1,200 dpi on the glass. The exact glass size has not been established here, so this assessment does not expand it to Legal from the feeder's limit.

Compatible HP Scan on Windows saves images as files or sends them to another application. The original Mac HP Easy Scan procedure expressly accepts glass or feeder originals and finishes with File, Save. Install the full compatible acquisition software for the chosen USB, Ethernet or infrastructure Wi-Fi arrangement; a print-only installation is insufficient evidence of scanning.

Prepared network destinations are separate routines

For Scan to Network Folder, prepare a shared path, permissions and credentials through the wizard or Embedded Web Server. Use Save and Test before relying on the profile. The actual panel job in this guide explicitly starts with an original on the glass, so this assessment does not borrow feeder handling from a different acquisition routine.

Scan to Email likewise needs a configured SMTP server, port and applicable authentication. The documented panel job also starts on the glass, delivering an attachment to the recipient. A four-digit PIN protecting either profile is not evidence of PIN-held printing. Historical JetAdvantage service headings do not independently establish a currently supported private-print setup.

The priority slot is one sheet, not another cassette

The included ordinary inputs are a 250-sheet cassette and a single-sheet priority slot. The normal paper reserve is 250 sheets; the attended priority sheet does not add another unattended supply position. The cassette's rating uses 75-g/m², 20-lb paper. Letter, Legal and A4 are positively marked in both inputs and the automatic duplex column.

Legal loading extends the cassette approximately 2.2 inches at the front. Adjust the guides lightly, stay below the fill limit and select the actual size and type. For envelopes, the slot holds one and the cassette up to five, with the short postage end leading. Those numbers do not add to ordinary-paper capacity or establish envelope duplex.

Mobile printing needs its own connection choice

Computer USB, Ethernet and dual-band infrastructure Wi-Fi are included. This model also has genuine Wi-Fi Direct. Its original procedure supports compatible Android Mopria printing and compatible Windows drivers over that peer connection, without requiring the printer to join an office network.

AirPrint and Mopria through a suitable shared network are separate supported mobile routes. The guide warns that desktop automatic-duplex controls might be unavailable through AirPrint. Mobile plans therefore do not inherit desktop duplex, precise capacity, scanning or private-job settings.

Finish with supply region and operating clearance

The North American guide specifies the 202A/202X cartridge family. Original US introductory yields are approximately 1,400 black and 700 composite color pages; replacement declarations differ by cartridge. The exact US page states a dynamic-security chip restriction, which should be checked with the intended supplies rather than confused with an HP+ lifetime-account requirement.

The closed body is about 16.5 by 16.6 by 13.2 inches and 41.2 pounds with cartridges. The original guide shows a much larger fully open footprint than the shop's smaller maximum-dimensions field. Allow actual loading and service access. Choose the M281fdw for compatible color duplex printing and one-sided capture, with fax separately requiring suitable telephone service.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker one-sided rates 22 black/color Letter ppm, separately 21 A4 ppm. Recommended print volume 150–2,500 monthly versus 40,000 maximum duty; feeder scan ppm and duplex printing throughput are separate.

Paper handling

The 250-sheet cassette uses a 75-g/m², 20-lb basis. The separate one-sheet priority slot is attended, so normal minimum-capacity matching uses 250 sheets. The exact original table positively marks Letter/Legal/A4 in both inputs and automatic duplex. The Legal cassette extends about 2.2 inches. Envelopes use one priority sheet or five in the cassette, face up with short postage end first and the actual size/type selected; no envelope duplex. Output 100 and feeder 50 are not blank input.

Scanning arrangement

Exact 50-page feeder is explicitly simplex only, max 8.5 × 14 inches, with Letter/Legal/A4 confirmed; optical color/mono ADF up to 300 dpi versus glass up to 1,200. Flatbed exists but exact glass sizes not established, route empty only for flexible size. Actual full computer software files accept glass or feeder. Actual panel folder/email job instructions specify glass only, so those plans do not inherit ADF. Automatic two-sided copy heading does not prove duplex input.

Computer and mobile connections

Included computer USB, Ethernet and dual-band infrastructure Wi-Fi; true Wi-Fi Direct confirmed in exact fdw original column and actual procedure. Exact sources call Ethernet Fast while also listing 10/100/1000; no rate promise. Local AirPrint/Mopria use suitable shared network; Wi-Fi Direct supports actual Mopria/Windows print routine only, without scanner or desktop finishing/capacity borrowing. Front host USB and telephone ports are separate.

Supplies and declared yields

North American 202A/202X family CF500A/X black, CF501A/X cyan, CF502A/X yellow, CF503A/X magenta; 203A/X is another region. Original US box around 1,400 black/700 composite color; exact US replacement black around 1,400/3,200 and color around 1,300/2,500, variable maker declarations. Dynamic security exact US wording requires original HP chip and warns non-HP-chip operation can change; not HP+ lifetime enrollment. No remaining toner or live cost claim.

Software and support

Compatible full HP Scan/HP Easy Scan files over the supported USB/network installation, not merely a print queue. Network-folder shared path/permissions/credentials and SMTP server/port/authentication need setup and Save and Test; actual panel routines establish glass only. Scan-profile PIN and EWS password do not establish print-job PIN, which remains unknown. AirPrint may lack desktop automatic-duplex controls. No retired cloud or JetAdvantage private-print availability promised.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US T6B82A#BGJ and US technical 110–127 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Not Available status is not an explicit discontinued notice or stock guarantee. Body 16.5 × 16.6 × 13.2 inches, 41.2 lb with cartridges; original fully open 17.8 × 39.7 × 23.2 differs from shop smaller maximum 16.7 × 18.7 × 13.3, so allow actual loading/service clearance. Analog fax requires suitable telephone service and configuration.
