Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a wired-network desk handle color Legal printing, automatic print duplex, two-sided color feeder scanning, copying and fax with 300 ordinary sheets?
Qualifies with compatible computer print/scan software and the documented US edition. The feeder handles Legal originals; fax separately requires suitable telephone service. Automatic feeder duplex is confirmed, while a single-pass mechanism is not.
Explore this need in the finder →Does it meet a requirement to scan both sides of every A4 sheet in one pass?
Does not qualify for that essential. Exact sources confirm automatic two-sided ADF scanning, but the reviewed material does not establish the physical single-pass method. Ordinary duplex support is retained without guessing the mechanism.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I use the flatbed to scan a full Legal page to my Ethernet computer?
Fails the selected Legal flatbed requirement. The glass is approximately 8.5 × 11.7 inches for Letter/A4. Legal originals are supported in the document feeder instead.

The HP LaserJet Pro 400 color MFP M475dn is the CE863A configuration with color printing, copying, computer scanning and analog fax. Its useful combination is a 50-page document feeder, automatic two-sided printing and positively documented automatic two-sided scanning. It suits a desk that works through ordinary multipage documents and can use USB or a wired network.
This review concerns the US low-voltage configuration documented by HP at 110–127 VAC, 60 Hz. The regional brochure separately describes high-voltage versions; it does not establish universal mains operation. Verify the unit's electrical plate and the exact software needed by the intended computer. A surviving support page does not promise new stock or current operating-system compatibility.
The original three-column comparison matters. M475dn has USB 2.0 and 10/100 Ethernet, while the separate M475dw column adds wireless networking. The dn does not acquire that radio through the shared family name or touchscreen.
Choose the scanner surface for the original
The flatbed supports originals up to approximately 8.5 by 11.7 inches, covering Letter and A4. The feeder supports pages up to 8.5 by 14 inches, including Legal. A Legal original therefore belongs in the feeder, not on a presumed Legal-length glass.
HP gives the feeder a capacity of up to 50 sheets of 75-g/m², 20-lb bond paper. Remove staples and clips and avoid originals with correction tape or fluid. Photographs, small originals and fragile pages belong on the glass. The guide places a photo face down at the upper-left corner.
Automatic duplex scanning is positively marked for M475dn in the original comparison and stated in its current specifications. The material reviewed does not establish whether both images are acquired in a single physical pass. This review therefore supports an ordinary automatic two-sided scanning requirement, while leaving a single-pass requirement unconfirmed.
Color scanning is documented independently of color printing. The scan controls offer color, grayscale and black-and-white settings. Higher resolution and color depth can enlarge the file and lengthen processing; choose settings for the destination rather than treating the highest number as an automatic advantage.
Install computer scanning as well as the printer driver
The original software supports HP Scan, TWAIN and Windows WIA capture. In HP Scan, choose a shortcut, adjust the settings and start the scan; Advanced Settings provides further controls. Historical server installations provide print and scan drivers rather than necessarily the same full desktop software package.
For USB, use an A-to-B cable and connect it when the installer asks. For Ethernet, connect the network cable, print a configuration report and install the printer at the reported IP address. Confirm both printing and the required scanning program on the intended system. A print-only installation is insufficient evidence that the full document workflow is ready.
The front USB host socket has a different purpose. The panel's Scan to USB Drive routine creates PDF or JPG files on a flash drive; that is not a rear USB computer connection. OCR also needs the relevant software: the original guide describes an HP Scan editable-text shortcut and separately installed Readiris, rather than automatic recognition in every panel scan.
AirPrint is separately documented for a networked printer and compatible Apple device, with a possible firmware update. For this wired dn, the printer uses Ethernet on the same local network reached by the Apple device. Its mobile print route does not borrow desktop scanning, exact paper controls or duplex behavior. Mopria and held-print PIN release remain unconfirmed.
Use the included 300-sheet arrangement
The standard inputs are a genuine 50-sheet multipurpose tray and a 250-sheet main tray. The optional extra 250-sheet tray is excluded from the 300-sheet included total. The feeder's original-document capacity and the 150-sheet output bin are separate quantities.
The original support marks confirm Letter, Legal and A4 in both inputs and in the automatic print duplexer. Load ordinary paper print-side up, adjust the guides and keep the stack below the limit tabs. For Legal in the main tray, hold the extension tab and pull the tray front out. HP specifies approximately 64 mm, or 2.5 inches, of additional front projection.
In the compatible Windows driver, select Print on both sides in Finishing. This is automatic duplex, distinct from the separate manual-duplex checkbox. The original media table specifies 60–160-g/m² stock for the automatic two-sided path and excludes envelopes, labels and transparencies from it. Select the actual media type and size for each job.
Up to ten suitable envelopes can use the supported inputs in a one-sided job. The main tray's envelope orientation is printable face up with the stamp end at the back. Do not apply the ordinary 250-sheet paper figure to envelopes.
Account for fax, cartridges and access space
Fax uses the telephone line-in port and an appropriate telephone service. HP recommends a dedicated analog line and explains that DSL, PBX, ISDN or VoIP arrangements need the correct filters or configuration. An Ethernet cable alone does not provide that fax service. Private Receive protects stored incoming faxes with a password; it is not proof of PIN release for computer print jobs.
Exact replacement parts are CE410A standard black, CE410X higher-yield black, CE411A cyan, CE412A yellow and CE413A magenta. The brochure declares approximately 2,200 or 4,000 black pages and 2,600 pages for each replacement color, separately from introductory cartridges around 1,400 pages. Actual remaining toner in a particular unit is unknown. The front cartridge drawer needs accessible space for replacement.
Maker-rated one-sided speed is up to 21 Letter ppm in black or color, separately 20 A4 ppm. Recommended monthly volume is 1,000–2,500 pages versus a 40,000-page maximum duty. The body is approximately 16.5 inches wide, 19.0 deep and 19.7 high at 65 lb. Allow substantially more working depth, plus scanner-lid, output and cable access.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The original exact M475dn column declares up to 21 one-sided Letter ppm and separately 20 A4 ppm in black or color. Recommended monthly volume is 1,000–2,500 pages, distinct from the 40,000-page maximum duty. Scan ipm and copy cpm are not substituted for print speed; no measured throughput is claimed.
Paper handling
The included 50-sheet multipurpose input and 250-sheet main input total 300 ordinary sheets; optional Tray 3 adds 250 only if separately installed and is excluded. Original Letter, Legal and A4 support marks are positive in both inputs and the automatic duplexer. Everyday paper is listed at 60–90 g/m²; capacity varies with stock and conditions. No exact 75-g capacity basis is borrowed from the ADF. Load print-side up, set guides and keep below tabs. Main-tray Legal loading extends the front about 64 mm or 2.5 inches. Original automatic duplex uses 60–160-g/m² stock, excluding envelopes, labels and transparencies. Envelopes use a one-sided job, up to ten in a supported input, with actual driver size/type; main-tray orientation is face up with stamp end at the back.
Scanning arrangement
Exact original M475dn column positively marks automatic duplex scanning and color capture. The 50-page ADF handles Letter, Legal and A4; its 75-g/m², 20-lb bond capacity is separate from blank input. Glass maximum is about 8.5 × 11.7 inches for Letter/A4, not Legal. The reviewed source does not establish physical reversing versus single-pass operation, so the positive automatic duplex route is recorded with unspecified mechanism and cannot qualify a single-pass essential. Use the glass for photos, fragile or small originals; remove staples, clips and correction material before feeder use.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact dn has rear USB 2.0 and built-in 10/100 Ethernet. Original comparison leaves its wireless row blank while marking dw, and the brochure limits included Wi-Fi/direct wireless to dw. USB and Ethernet computer software arrangements support the documented print/HP Scan workflow; front USB host scanning saves PDF/JPG to a flash drive and is distinct. AirPrint uses the printer on Ethernet with the Apple device on the same local network and may require firmware. The mobile plan does not inherit desktop scan, exact paper, capacity, duplex or PIN support. Mopria remains unknown.
Supplies and declared yields
Exact original parts are CE410A black 305A, CE410X black 305X, CE411A cyan, CE412A yellow and CE413A magenta. The brochure declares about 2,200/4,000 black replacement pages and 2,600 per replacement color, separately from introductory cartridges around 1,400 pages. No test standard is invented for that yield declaration and actual remaining toner is unknown. Replace through the front drawer, remove orange protection and complete sealing tape, and avoid touching the drum. Original Very Low settings include Continue, Stop, Prompt and default Print Black for color; these are not newer HP+ lifetime cartridge requirements.
Software and support
Use compatible exact-model full desktop software or the required scan drivers and application. Original HP Scan, TWAIN and Windows WIA routes are positive; historical operating-system lists are not current compatibility guarantees. USB uses an A-to-B cable when prompted; wired installation identifies the IP from a configuration report. HP Scan offers shortcuts and advanced controls. OCR needs the appropriate editable-text shortcut or separately installed Readiris. Private Receive is incoming-fax password protection, not held-print PIN release. A web password or absence of a hard disk does not settle print PIN support.
Electrical edition and setup
HP exact US M475dn support establishes the model and 110–127-V, 60-Hz configuration; original CE863A crosswalk is positive, but no unverified option suffix is claimed. Separate high-voltage editions are not interchangeable. The current exact US reference survives; the observed discontinued shop page is CE863AR refurbished, not the assigned CE863A, and is not used to claim base-model status or present stock. Body is 16.5 W × 19.0 D × 19.7 H inches at 65 lb, with no cartridge-weight basis asserted. Current maximum depth is 27.3 inches; Legal main-tray projection is separately 2.5 inches. Allow lid, drawer, output and cable access. Fax needs a suitable analog telephone arrangement in addition to computer USB or Ethernet; digital services require appropriate filters/configuration.
