LaserJet Pro 400 Color MFP M475dw CE864AIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible small-office routine needing color printing and two-sided capture over full computer software without requiring verified single-pass scanning.

The main tradeoff

The glass is shorter than Legal, expansion trays are optional and old software or cloud-service references need checking against the intended present setup.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it scan both sides of Legal originals over Wi-Fi and print color duplex pages with included fax?

Yes, with full compatible computer software, supported ordinary paper and suitable fax service. Its automatic scan duplex is confirmed, although single-pass hardware is not.

Does the glass capture an entire Legal original?

No. The glass is Letter/A4 length; Legal originals use the document feeder.

Is single-pass duplex capture verified?

No. Automatic duplex capture is documented, but the reviewed sources do not establish the physical mechanism.

The wireless member of an earlier color MFP family

The HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color MFP M475dw combines color printing, scanning, copying and analog fax with included wireless networking. Its CE864A configuration also provides automatic duplex printing and automatic two-sided document capture. Those features make it worth considering for a compatible office handling both color output and mixed paperwork.

The important comparison is with the actual package. The related M475dn lacks the dw’s included wireless networking, while the M375 model has different duplex capabilities. A shared manual is useful only when its separate model columns are respected.

Automatic duplex scanning does not settle the hardware question

HP positively marks automatic duplex scanning for the M475dw. That supports a requirement to capture both sides without manually turning each original. The reviewed material does not establish whether the physical process is reversing or single-pass, however, so a buyer specifically requiring single-pass capture should choose a model with that mechanism documented.

The feeder holds up to 50 ordinary originals and supports Legal length. The glass stops at approximately 8.5 by 11.7 inches, making it suitable for Letter and A4 rather than a complete Legal sheet. Use it for photographs or material unsuitable for a feeder, and remove staples or other obstructions from feeder batches.

Make the computer and network workflow part of the choice

The original operating guide documents HP Scan and acquisition through compatible TWAIN or WIA software. Its Mac procedure selects the scanner, adjusts capture settings and saves the result to a chosen folder. This is a specific computer-file workflow, rather than an assumption based on the existence of a USB socket.

Computer USB, Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi are included. Install suitable full software for the intended system, then check the actual scan and print controls. The historical operating-system lists describe the original software environment; they do not guarantee every feature on a present computer.

Panel scanning to a flash drive is another documented route. It saves a file onto removable storage and should not be confused with a computer controlling the scanner. Likewise, OCR output depends on the appropriate installed software, rather than being inferred from the color touchscreen.

Wireless printing has more than one meaning

The dw’s infrastructure wireless connection joins a supported network. HP’s original brochure separately identifies wireless direct printing for this model. That peer-print arrangement should not be treated as proof that the computer scanning workflow works identically without a router.

AirPrint is documented with network and firmware conditions. The original instructions describe connection to a wireless network, so the assessed AirPrint route follows that arrangement. Mobile applications can expose different media and finishing controls from a full desktop driver. An older cloud-service reference is also not a promise that the service remains available.

Start with the supplied trays and appropriate paper

The ordinary supplied input totals 300 sheets: 50 in the multipurpose tray and 250 in the main cassette. The optional additional 250-sheet tray explains the larger expansion figure. Check the actual unit if an earlier offer claims that extra capacity.

The original paper table marks Letter, Legal and A4 for the supplied inputs and automatic print duplex. Select the correct size and type in the driver before printing. Envelopes have their own supported sizes, loading orientation and capacity; the manual expressly excludes that media type from automatic duplex.

Choose for the recurring workload and complete ownership needs

HP recommends 1,000–2,500 printed pages per month. The much larger maximum duty figure is a separate limit, while published print, scan and copy rates describe different operations. Decide around the routine you actually expect rather than the largest number in a specification sheet.

The four-cartridge system means black and color supplies need separate attention. Check cartridge condition, the available compatible software, the actual electrical plate and room to open the scanner and paper paths. The M475dw fits color office work with wireless connections and automatic two-sided capture, provided Legal glass or verified single-pass scanning is not essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

M475 output up to 21 Letter or 20 A4 ppm in black or color. Recommended monthly printing is 1,000–2,500; 40,000 is maximum duty. Capture, copy and printing rates remain separate.

Paper handling

Included ordinary input is 50 plus 250 sheets, totaling 300; a further 250-sheet tray is optional. Actual original size tickmarks support Letter/Legal/A4 in supplied inputs and automatic print duplex. Envelope types are expressly excluded from automatic duplex, with separate ten-envelope and orientation limits.

Scanning arrangement

Exact dw column marks automatic duplex scanning and copying, but reviewed material does not establish single-pass versus reversing hardware. The 50-sheet feeder supports Letter/Legal/A4; glass up to 8.5 × 11.7 inches supports Letter/A4, not full Legal. Compatible HP Scan/TWAIN/WIA computer capture is documented independently from panel USB-flash capture.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB, 10/100 Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi distinguish dw from dn. Original brochure additionally identifies dw-only legacy wireless direct printing; this is not identified as standard Wi-Fi Direct and is not admitted to that distinct questionnaire connection. AirPrint needs the supported wireless network and potentially updated firmware. Mopria and a direct scanner workflow are not established by the original sources.

Supplies and declared yields

Four-cartridge color system uses 305A black CE410A or higher-yield 305X CE410X and color CE411A/CE412A/CE413A. The original brochure distinguishes introductory cartridges from replacements; included historical yields do not establish remaining supplies. Analog fax needs appropriate telephone service.

Software and support

Use compatible full computer scan software and actual size/type/duplex controls. HP Scan Mac has explicit selection and Save routine; Windows supports HP Scan and actual TWAIN/WIA acquisition. OCR depends on appropriate installed software such as the separately supplied Readiris, not an assumed built-in scanner engine. Management passwords do not establish print-job PIN release.

Electrical edition and setup

CE864A is the dw base part; no refurbished or regional suffix is invented. Exact US technical reference specifies 110–127 VAC, 60 Hz, separately from high-voltage editions. Earlier original documentation does not itself prove official discontinuation or present stock. Closed 16.5 × 19 × 19.7-inch body weighs 65 lb; allow the larger open paper/scanner clearance.
