Color LaserJet Pro MFP M476dw (CF387A#BGJ; US configuration)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

An office producing a recommended 1,000–2,500 pages monthly that can maintain compatible full software and needs color Legal feeder capture plus automatic desktop print duplex.

The main tradeoff

The glass is Letter/A4 rather than Legal, legacy Wireless Direct is distinct from Wi-Fi Direct, and mobile duplex is unconfirmed. Email/folder profiles and fax require their own configured services.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible USB computer print color Legal pages automatically on both sides, capture two-sided Legal color originals in one pass, copy and fax with 300 ordinary sheets?

Qualifies with earlier models enabled and the compatible full computer setup, plus separate suitable telephone service for fax. The exact dw includes automatic Legal print duplex and a Legal-capable single-pass color feeder; the included paper inputs total 300 ordinary sheets.

Can Legal color documents be captured on the flatbed over Ethernet?

Fails that selected glass size. The original technical table limits the glass to 8.5 × 11.7 inches for Letter/A4, despite a conflicting sales heading. Legal capture uses the document feeder.

Does the local AirPrint route independently guarantee automatic duplex?

Does not qualify on the reviewed mobile evidence. Automatic duplex is confirmed for the compatible computer-driver arrangement, while the guide warns that its Mac duplex setting may be unavailable through AirPrint. The finder does not join those separate job routes.

The dw package earns its suffix

The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M476dw fits a small office that needs color printing, automatic print duplex and two-sided document capture through a single-pass feeder. USB, Ethernet and built-in Wi-Fi give it several ordinary computer arrangements. Its deciding limitation is age: this discontinued configuration still needs compatible software, working network services and a carefully checked surviving unit.

The exact US package here is CF387A#BGJ, with the documented 110–127-V, 60-Hz configuration. The dw includes wireless networking, NFC touch-to-print and an automatic print duplexer. Those features cannot be inferred simply from the shared M476 family name; the nw lacks automatic print duplex and the dn lacks included wireless networking.

HP declares up to 21 Letter pages per minute in black or color, separately from 20 ppm on A4. The recommended volume is 1,000–2,500 pages monthly, distinct from a 40,000-page maximum duty figure. Neither number is a review measurement.

Capture both sides without enlarging the glass

The 50-sheet feeder uses single-pass, dual-head capture, independently of the automatic print duplexer. Its maximum original is 8.5 × 14 inches, permitting Legal, Letter and A4 documents. The glass is 8.5 × 11.7 inches for Letter/A4 originals. A conflicting Legal-flatbed marketing heading on the store page does not override the original technical table.

Color scanning is separately documented: the feeder supports up to 300 × 300 dpi, while the glass reaches up to 1,200 × 1,200 dpi. Use the feeder for a suitable stack and the glass for originals unsuitable for automatic feeding. The original sheet ties computer input to TWAIN/WIA-compatible software and explicitly rates scanning to file from the feeder.

A compatible full HP installation supplies HP Scan and the relevant computer drivers over the supported USB or network arrangement. The guide's basic HP Scan examples begin with glass loading, while its exact hardware and technical specification independently establish electronic duplex feeder capture. Do not mistake scan images per minute for printed pages per minute.

Panel delivery needs an actual destination

Sending a scan to a shared folder requires a network connection, a shared accessible path and any required username/password. Configure that destination with the wizard or Embedded Web Server and use Save and Test before depending on it. An unavailable computer or inaccessible share will not become a file destination merely because the printer is online.

Email delivery separately needs an SMTP server, port and applicable authentication/security settings. The outgoing profile can have a PIN; that protects use of the profile rather than releasing held print jobs. The reviewed panel email and folder procedures explicitly start on the glass, so those delivery plans retain Letter/A4 glass support without borrowing the desktop feeder workflow.

The front host USB socket handles supported flash-drive tasks. It is different from the computer USB interface, and a scan saved to removable storage is not automatically a direct computer scan connection. Fax likewise needs suitable telephone service through its telephone connection; Ethernet and Wi-Fi do not replace that line.

Automatic duplex with 300 included sheets

The included paper reserve is a 50-sheet multipurpose input plus a 250-sheet main cassette, rated with ordinary paper. The optional third 250-sheet cassette, 50-sheet original feeder and 150-sheet output are separate. Letter, Legal and A4 are supported in both included paper inputs and by the automatic print duplexer.

For an ordinary Windows job, select Print on both sides in the Finishing tab. The documented Mac automatic-duplex procedure uses the HP driver and a binding choice; the guide warns it might not be available with AirPrint. Consequently, the mobile plan does not inherit the desktop driver's automatic-duplex promise.

Extend the main cassette for Legal stock, allowing about 2.5 inches of additional front projection. Adjust its guides and actual paper settings. Despite broader media listings in the sales table, the operating guide specifically directs envelopes and labels to Tray 1. Select the correct special-media type rather than assuming every supported stock can use the duplexer.

Local mobile printing and four supplies

AirPrint and Mopria are documented for compatible local devices. Legacy HP Wireless Direct provides a separate peer wireless arrangement; it is not relabeled as the questionnaire's Wi-Fi Direct option. NFC touch-to-print also requires a compatible NFC printing device, rather than guaranteeing that any phone will print by touching it.

The original box has introductory black and composite color yields around 1,200 pages. Replacement 312A CF380A black is declared around 2,400 pages, or CF380X 312X around 4,400; cyan CF381A, yellow CF382A and magenta CF383A are each around 2,700 under ISO/IEC 19798 continuous-printing conditions. Actual yield varies.

The original dw dimensions are 16.5 × 19.1 × 19.7 inches with trays and covers closed, and 63.8 lb with toner. Maximum depth reaches 27.3 inches. Allow feeder, scanner, supply-door and cable access. A current model with explicitly supported software is the more sensible alternative when maintaining this older installation would become the main task.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact dw scope declares up to 21 Letter ppm in black or color, separately 20 A4 ppm. Recommended monthly volume 1,000–2,500 is distinct from maximum duty 40,000. Original feeder scan-to-file speeds and duplex ipm are separate from print ppm. No editorial test is invented.

Paper handling

Included 50-sheet multipurpose input plus 250-sheet cassette total 300 ordinary sheets; optional third 250-sheet cassette, 50-sheet original feeder and 150-sheet output are separate. Letter, Legal and A4 are explicitly supported in both included inputs and automatic print duplexer. Legal cassette extension adds about 64 mm/2.5 inches at the front. Automatic duplex stock is 60–163 g/m². Original operating guide directs envelopes/labels to Tray 1 despite the broader sales-table cassette media list; correct size/type and guides are required. Windows automatic duplex uses Finishing/Print on both sides; original Mac routine requires HP driver and may not be available with AirPrint.

Scanning arrangement

Exact dw original column includes 50-page electronic duplex feeder, and original US brochure independently confirms single-pass dual-head scanning. Feeder supports Letter/Legal/A4 to 8.5 × 14 inches; glass supports Letter/A4 to 8.5 × 11.7, despite conflicting store Legal-flatbed heading. Color is independently positive, up to 300 × 300 dpi through feeder or 1,200 × 1,200 dpi on glass. Original computer input uses compatible TWAIN/WIA/HP scanning software and its rated ADF scan-to-file workflow. Panel email and folder procedures explicitly load glass, so those separate delivery plans remain glass only.

Computer and mobile connections

Included computer USB 2.0, Fast Ethernet 10/100 and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, plus a separate host USB flash-drive socket. Legacy HP Wireless Direct and NFC touch-to-print are included on dw; legacy Direct is not tagged as Wi-Fi Direct. NFC requires a compatible device. AirPrint/Mopria local mobile plans are separate from computer scanning and desktop duplex. Fax needs suitable telephone service. No retired cloud service availability or present stock is promised.

Supplies and declared yields

Original box declares approximately 1,200 black and composite C/Y/M introductory pages. Replacement 312A CF380A black approximately 2,400 or 312X CF380X approximately 4,400; cyan CF381A, yellow CF382A and magenta CF383A approximately 2,700 each under ISO/IEC 19798 continuous-printing conditions. Actual yields vary. No current toner price, remaining yield, measured quality or lifetime HP+ commitment is invented.

Software and support

Compatible full HP software provides HP Scan, Windows WIA/TWAIN and model-specific print arrangements; historical OS lists do not guarantee current versions. Shared-folder capture requires configured accessible share/path/credentials and Save and Test. Email requires configured SMTP server/port/authentication/security. Destination-profile PINs and administration passwords do not establish held-print PIN release, which remains unknown. Reviewed panel delivery instructions start on glass, without borrowing desktop ADF routes.

Electrical edition and setup

Discontinued exact US CF387A#BGJ with documented 110–127-V, 60-Hz configuration, separate from 220–240-V supplies; do not convert voltage. dw includes automatic print duplex, wireless and NFC, unlike material nw/dn differences. Exact closed dw body 16.5 W × 19.1 D × 19.7 H inches, maximum depth 27.3; weight 63.8 lb with toner. The nw 18.4-inch depth/61.2-lb weight are not borrowed. Allow front Legal extension, scanner/feeder, supply door and cables. Store USB cable fields conflict, so verify the actual surviving package rather than promising an included cable.
