M477fdnIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A wired small office needing color pages, automatic ordinary-paper duplex and a verified computer or configured network scanning routine.

The main tradeoff

No included Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct or NFC. Private print release needs extra dedicated USB storage; fax needs suitable telephone service, and exact glass size is unconfirmed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the standard M477fdn combine USB color printing, automatic Legal duplex, single-pass color Legal scans and fax at 4,000 monthly pages?

Qualifies with earlier models enabled, actual compatible HP computer print/scan software, approved ordinary stock and a separate suitable configured analog fax line. Included print capacity is 300 sheets; the 50-page scanner feeder is separate.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can an M477fdn use included Wi-Fi Direct for a nearby phone without an Ethernet network?

Fails the selected connection. Original fdn column explicitly excludes Wi-Fi Direct and NFC. Its standard shared connection is Ethernet, and same-LAN mobile printing is a different arrangement.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does a standard M477fdn already provide PIN-held printing through USB without extra storage?

Fails the included-configuration PIN requirement. HP requires a separate dedicated USB 2.0 flash drive with at least 16 GB free, setup and a compatible driver; the documented box does not include that storage.

Color office documents through a wired connection

The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477fdn combines color printing, copying, scanning and analog fax. HP's exact US product is CF378A#BGJ, now listed as discontinued. The reviewed US electrical configuration is 110–127 volts at 60 Hz. Its regional identity matters when examining older stock or a secondhand unit; a matching model name does not make every electrical edition interchangeable.

This suffix is particularly useful for an office that already has Ethernet available near the printer. The original model table gives fdn Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0, while explicitly excluding an infrastructure wireless print server, Wi-Fi Direct and NFC. Some general promotional paragraphs on the product page discuss wireless or tap-to-print features. Those paragraphs do not override the original fdn column.

HP specifies up to 28 Letter pages per minute for black or color printing, separately 27 A4. It recommends 750–4,000 printed pages per month. The 50,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle is a different measure, not a suggested everyday target. Scan images per minute and duplex print images per minute are also separate from the one-sided print rate.

The included paper capacity is 300 sheets

There are two normal print inputs: a 50-sheet multipurpose tray and a 250-sheet main tray. Their combined nominal ordinary-paper capacity is 300 sheets. The 50-page document feeder belongs to the scanner and does not increase print input capacity. An optional 550-sheet third tray can expand the setup, but it is excluded from this review's included-configuration total.

The original paper matrix separately approves Letter, Legal and A4 in the included feeds and automatic duplexer. Select the size, media type and automatic two-sided setting in a compatible driver. The exact specifications allow ordinary duplex media from 60–163 g/m². Broader approvals for certain photo paper or postcards do not make every such sheet suitable for the duplex path.

Legal paper extends the main tray about two inches beyond the front of the printer, so check the working depth with the actual paper loaded. Envelopes follow another routine: the guide recommends a stack no thicker than 5 mm, approximately four to six envelopes, in Tray 1, or ten in Tray 2. Both feeds load envelopes face up with the short postage end entering first. Choose the envelope size, Envelope type and intended tray in the driver; this is not an automatic-duplex envelope workflow.

The feeder scans both sides in one pass

The exact fdn feature section positively specifies one-pass, two-sided scanning. Its 50-sheet feeder therefore supports a single-pass duplex route, alongside ordinary one-sided feeder scans. The documented original range runs from 4 by 6 inches to 8.5 by 14 inches, accommodating Letter, Legal and A4. Scan software can capture color, independently of the choice to print a black or color document.

A flatbed provides a separate route for suitable individual originals. The material read confirms that hardware but does not establish a separate exact glass-size limit. This review consequently does not turn the Legal feeder maximum into a Legal flatbed claim. Select the feeder for the confirmed Legal scan route.

On a compatible computer, HP Scan can initiate a scan and save the result as a file. USB is a direct computer setup; Ethernet supports the corresponding installed network routine. Confirm the actual scanning application and driver on the intended operating system. A basic print queue alone does not demonstrate that the scan software is working.

Network delivery and fax have separate setup steps

Front-panel Scan to Email needs an active network connection and a working SMTP configuration, including the required server, port and authentication. Scan to Network Folder needs a configured shared destination and the appropriate access. Test delivery with the office's actual service before making either routine essential to the workflow.

AirPrint and Mopria are documented network-print options. A mobile device can use the local network to reach this Ethernet-connected printer. That arrangement does not add Wi-Fi Direct to fdn. The original guide also warns that Mac driver duplex controls might not be available through AirPrint, so this review keeps mobile duplex unconfirmed.

The fax port connects to suitable telephone service. HP describes the printer as an analog fax device and recommends a dedicated analog line; other services require their own correct arrangements. Configure answer mode and fax identification, then run the fax test. USB or Ethernet connectivity does not replace that telephone connection.

Budget for actual supplies and any private-print upgrade

Built-in job-storage software does not mean that private printing is ready from the box. The original guide requires a dedicated USB 2.0 flash drive with at least 16 GB free in the rear host port, plus setup and a compatible driver. That extra storage is absent from the documented package. The standard configuration therefore does not qualify here for PIN-held print release.

HP identifies 410A CF410A black and CF411A/CF412A/CF413A color replacements, around 2,300 pages each. Higher-yield 410X alternatives are approximately 6,500 black or 5,000 color pages. HP's exact black 410A declaration uses ISO/IEC 19798. These declared replacement yields do not establish remaining installed toner; the documented introductory color cartridges start with a lower nominal yield.

The closed body is approximately 16.4 inches wide, 18.6 deep and 15.7 high, weighing about 51.2 pounds with cartridges. Leave substantially more space to open it for service. A maintained M477fdn suits a wired color-document office when its real scanner installation, paper loading and telephone or network services fit the required tasks.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker maximum 28 Letter ppm black and color, separately 27 A4. Recommended monthly print range 750–4,000 differs from maximum duty 50,000. Scan rates and duplex print images per minute are separate measures.

Paper handling

Included 50-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 and 250-sheet Tray 2 provide 300 nominal ordinary print sheets; 50-page scanner feeder is separate. Optional 550-sheet third tray excluded. Original size matrix positively checks Letter, Legal and A4 in included feeds and automatic duplexer. Ordinary duplex 60–163 g/m² under correct media settings. Legal extends Tray 2 approximately 51 mm/2 inches forward. Envelope stack up to 5 mm/about 4–6 in Tray 1 or ten in Tray 2, face up/short postage end first with Envelope type, exact size and chosen source. Envelopes and labels not assigned duplex.

Scanning arrangement

Exact fdn product features positively specify one-pass two-sided scanning. Included 50-sheet feeder supports automatic single-pass duplex; original ADF range 4×6 to 8.5×14 inches supports Letter, Legal and A4. Original guide independently documents color scan settings. Flatbed exists but its separate exact size limit was not established, so flatbed route has an empty size list.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet. Original exact fdn column excludes infrastructure Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and NFC despite generic promotional wireless paragraphs. USB or Ethernet computer scans require actual compatible HP Scan installation. Network SMTP email and shared-folder delivery require working configured services. Analog fax uses a separate suitable telephone connection.

Supplies and declared yields

410A CF410A black and CF411A cyan/CF412A yellow/CF413A magenta approximately 2,300 replacement pages each; 410X CF410X black approximately 6,500 and CF411X/CF412X/CF413X colors approximately 5,000. Exact HP black 410A declaration ISO/IEC 19798. Box nominal black 2,300 and introductory colors 1,200 each; remaining installed toner unknown.

Software and support

Computer driver automatic duplex is confirmed; original guide says Mac driver duplex options might not be available through AirPrint, so mobile duplex remains unknown. Included-configuration PIN-held printing is false because original guide requires a separately provided dedicated rear USB 2.0 flash drive with at least 16 GB free, setup and a compatible driver. If UPD is used, original guide requires version 5.9.0 or later. Scan-profile PIN is not private document release.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US CF378A#BGJ discontinued product. Reviewed 110–127 VAC 60 Hz configuration; other regional voltages not borrowed. Current exact US closed body approximately 16.4 W×18.6 D×15.7 H inches and 51.2 lb aligns original fdn row 16.35×18.59×15.74 and 51.15 lb with cartridges. Original fully open depth 44.27 and height 25.83 inches take precedence over contradictory current compact maximum-access figures; verify actual working space.
