M479fdnIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A wired office needing color output and single-pass color feeder scans through verified computer software or configured network delivery.

The main tradeoff

No included wireless or Direct connection. Fax needs suitable telephone service, default PIN printing needs extra storage, and body weight remains unresolved.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can M479fdn combine USB color Legal automatic duplex, single-pass color Legal scanning and fax at 4,000 monthly pages?

Qualifies with earlier models enabled, actual compatible installed/enabled HP scan software and driver, approved ordinary stock and a separate suitable configured analog fax line. Standard normal print input is 300 sheets.

Does a standard M479fdn provide office infrastructure Wi-Fi for printing and scanning?

Fails the connection requirement. The original exact fdn column excludes wireless connectivity and Wi-Fi Direct; included computer connections are USB and Ethernet.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does an unchanged M479fdn box satisfy PIN-held print release through Ethernet?

Fails the included PIN requirement. The original routine needs extra dedicated USB 2.0 storage at least 16 GB in size, configuration and a compatible driver; that device is not in the documented standard box.

A color MFP for an Ethernet office

The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdn combines color printing, copying, color scanning and analog fax in a wired configuration. The original model table maps fdn to W1A79A, and HP's exact US cartridge compatibility list independently identifies W1A79A#BGJ. This review covers its documented US 110–127-volt, 60-Hz configuration, without borrowing a refurbished product number or a different regional electrical edition.

USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet are included. The original fdn column explicitly excludes a wireless print server, Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi Direct. That matters if a desk has no network cable nearby: a nearby wireless M479 listing is not an equivalent description of this suffix. The fdn's scanner, however, remains the fuller dual-head single-pass configuration.

HP specifies up to 28 Letter pages per minute in black or color, separately 27 A4. Recommended monthly printing is 750–4,000 pages, while the 50,000-page maximum duty cycle is a distinct measure. The print rate does not describe scan speed or two-sided images per minute, and none of these figures are hands-on measurements from this review.

Choose a computer scan routine or configured network delivery

With actual compatible software, a computer can initiate a scan and save it as a file. HP Scan serves the documented Windows routine, while HP Easy Scan serves the macOS routine. USB provides the direct computer connection; Ethernet provides the installed network arrangement. Verify the real scanning application and saved result, rather than checking only whether an ordinary print job succeeds.

The 2022 original guide says remote scanning is disabled by default. Where required, enable scanning from a computer or mobile device in the printer settings and enable the computer-scan function in the software. The computer and printer must be connected and running for the relevant computer-delivery routine.

Front-panel Scan to Email uses a separately configured SMTP service, with its correct server, port and authentication. A network-folder scan uses a working shared destination and credentials. Neither service becomes ready merely because the Ethernet link is active. The original SharePoint instructions also explicitly exclude SharePoint 365, so check a particular office destination before depending on that function.

Single-pass originals have a different size limit from the glass

The original fdn column positively specifies a 50-page document feeder with two scan heads for single-pass duplex copying and scanning. Both sides of an original can be captured in one pass. The exact feeder range is 102 by 152 through 216 by 356 mm, covering Letter, Legal and A4. Ordinary one-sided feeder scanning is also supported.

The flatbed specification is separately 216 by 297 mm, supporting Letter and A4. Legal originals therefore have a confirmed feeder route, not a Legal-glass promise. The feeder's page capacity describes originals entering the scanner; it does not add to the printer's paper supply. Color scanning is confirmed independently of the color print engine.

Fax also needs its own setup. HP describes an analog fax device and recommends a dedicated analog telephone line. Connect the fax port to suitable service, configure the line and identification settings, and test the actual arrangement. A network cable cannot itself receive a telephone fax.

Automatic duplex is included, and ordinary capacity is 300

The reviewed configuration contains a 50-sheet multipurpose feed and a 250-sheet main tray, rated on 75 g/m² paper. That is 300 included ordinary print sheets. The 50-page scanner feeder is separate, and the optional 550-sheet third tray is not counted.

The original paper matrix explicitly maps Letter, Legal and A4 to both included print feeds and the automatic duplexer. Use a compatible computer driver, appropriate stock and matching size/type settings. Ordinary duplex guidance is 60–163 g/m²; broader heavy-paper input support is not general permission to duplex any stock. Loading Legal extends the main tray about two inches forward.

Envelope support has its own loading procedure. The guide's explicit Tray 1 routine takes up to ten envelopes, face up with the short postage end leading. Choose the correct envelope size, Envelope media type and Manual feed setting. The paper table also approves an envelope route through the main feed, but no automatic-duplex envelope promise is made here.

Mobile printing and private release remain separate decisions

AirPrint and Mopria network printing are documented. A mobile device on the same local network can reach an Ethernet-connected fdn without a radio inside the printer. That arrangement should not be labeled Wi-Fi Direct. The original guide warns that HP-driver duplex controls might not be available through AirPrint, so mobile duplex remains unconfirmed.

Private document release needs a separate dedicated USB 2.0 storage device of at least 16 GB in the rear host port, configuration and a compatible driver. The documented standard box does not include that device. Default matching therefore fails a PIN-held print requirement; a scan-profile PIN or administration password is not equivalent evidence.

The Americas supplies are 414A W2020A–W2023A or 414X W2020X–W2023X. Declared replacement yields are approximately 2,400 black/2,100 color standard, or 7,500 black/6,000 color high yield. HP's exact black 414A declaration uses ISO/IEC 19798. Regional cartridge restrictions, dynamic security and actual remaining toner should be checked on the intended unit.

The closed body is approximately 16.4 inches wide, 18.6 deep and 15.7 high. Source weights conflict and remain unknown here; service space is larger than the closed body. M479fdn suits an earlier wired color-office workflow when its real scanning software, document sizes, delivery services and telephone setup meet the required jobs.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original maker maximum 28 Letter ppm black/color, separately 27 A4. Duplex print ipm and scanner ppm/ipm are separate measures, not one-sided print rates. Recommended monthly printing 750–4,000 differs from maximum duty 50,000. No measured performance claimed.

Paper handling

Included 50-sheet Tray 1 plus 250-sheet Tray 2 at 75 g/m² gives 300 normal sheets; 50-page scanner feeder is not print capacity. Optional 550-sheet Tray 3 excluded. Original paper table positively supports Letter, Legal and A4 in included feeds and duplexer. Ordinary duplex 60–163 g/m² per exact model technical specifications; special-stock input approvals not generalized. Legal extends Tray 2 about 51 mm/2 inches. Envelopes supported in Tray 1/2; original explicit Tray 1 routine up to ten, face up/short postage end first with exact Envelope size/type and Manual feed. No envelope duplex promise.

Scanning arrangement

Exact original fdn column includes 50-page dual-head single-pass duplex scanner. ADF 102×152–216×356 mm supports Letter/Legal/A4 simplex and single-pass duplex; glass 216×297 mm supports Letter/A4, not Legal. Computer scan installation must be compatible and enabled where required.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact M479fdn includes USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet. Original fdn column explicitly excludes wireless print server, Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi Direct. Ethernet same-LAN AirPrint/Mopria does not add a printer radio. Network scan services need configured compatible SMTP/shared folder; analog fax needs separate suitable telephone service.

Supplies and declared yields

North/Latin America original 414A W2020A black, W2021A cyan/W2022A yellow/W2023A magenta; 414X W2020X–W2023X. Regional alternatives 415/416 are not US substitute recommendations. Declared replacements approximately 2,400 black/2,100 colors standard or 7,500 black/6,000 colors high yield; HP exact black 414A declaration ISO/IEC 19798. Box introductory nominal black 2,400 and colors 1,200; actual remaining toner unknown. Dynamic security for new/reused HP chips or circuitry may block non-HP alternatives after firmware changes.

Software and support

Computer routine requires actual compatible HP Scan for Windows or HP Easy Scan for macOS plus printer driver. Original 2022 guide says remote scanning disabled by default: enable Scan from a Computer or Mobile Device where required and verify actual scan delivery. Network SMTP email requires configured server/port/authentication; shared folder requires working path and credentials. Original SharePoint route excludes SharePoint 365. Mobile driver duplex unconfirmed. Private print release needs separate dedicated rear USB 2.0 storage at least 16 GB in size, setup and compatible driver; if UPD used, version 5.9.0 or later. No such extra storage in documented box, default PIN false.

Electrical edition and setup

Reviewed documented US model and 110–127 VAC 60 Hz configuration; separate 220–240 VAC hardware not dual voltage. Closed body approximately 16.4 W×18.6 D×15.7 H inches agrees with original exact model row 16.35×18.59×15.74. Weight unknown: original shared 23.2 kg/51.15 lb conflicts newer exact model values. Original fully open depth 44.27 and height 25.83 inches differs from current compact maximum-access figures; verify actual working clearance. Optional tray changes body.
