Color LaserJet Professional CP5225dn (CE712A#BGJ; US configuration)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

An office needing larger color documents and automatic two-sided ordinary paper from a compatible wired desktop setup.

The main tradeoff

It is a large 90.2-lb printer with no physical scanner or included Wi-Fi. Heavy-media input limits exceed the original automatic-duplex limit, so those claims must stay separate.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can wired color Tabloid reports automatically duplex with 350 ordinary input sheets?

Qualifies using compatible desktop software and paper within the original automatic-duplex limit of 105 g/m². Both standard inputs support Tabloid; no optional feeder is counted.

Can the standard package print through infrastructure Wi-Fi?

Fails. The documented normal package is USB/Ethernet; the wireless print server is a separate purchase.

Can this wired arrangement scan A3 originals to a computer?

Fails. A3 print handling does not establish a scanner. This is a print-only machine.

Large color pages with a wired office workflow

The HP Color LaserJet Professional CP5225dn suits an office that needs color documents larger than Letter and wants automatic two-sided printing from a compatible desktop. The exact US CE712A#BGJ package includes USB, built-in Ethernet, a 100-sheet multipurpose input, a 250-sheet cassette and an automatic duplexer. It remains a print-only machine.

The tradeoff is physical and practical: this is a large 90.2-pound printer without a scanner or included Wi-Fi. HP specifies a commercial environment for its FCC Class A emissions. Treat the model as a dated technical reference, with no current-stock or offer claim, and verify the actual computer software and installation space before choosing it.

Separate large input from large automatic duplex

Both standard inputs support ordinary Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and Tabloid, for 350 included sheets. The original plain-paper table specifies a 75 g/m² cassette basis and warns that capacity varies with media thickness and conditions. The optional 500-sheet feeder is a separate purchase; the 250-sheet output bin receives finished work and adds nothing to input.

The automatic-duplex size range covers these five ordinary formats. Weight is the more easily missed restriction: the original guide says not to automatically duplex paper heavier than 105 g/m². Current general paper-path specifications list higher weights, but that does not justify putting heavy cover stock through the automatic duplexer. Use the stricter documented duplex routine unless exact applicable guidance establishes otherwise.

Tray 1 also handles larger special media and up to ten envelopes within its envelope limit. Those are separate loading jobs, with envelopes face down and the stamp end toward the back. Input capability does not mean every large or thick sheet can be automatically printed on both sides.

The driver and connection determine the routine

For direct USB, the original guide specifies an A-to-B cable and says to wait until the installer requests the connection. For Ethernet, it tells Windows users to connect the printer to the network before starting the software installation. A Network Summary report is available from the panel's Reports menu to check the network arrangement.

Use an actually compatible driver and verify the desired page size, type and binding setting. The original Mac automatic-duplex procedure selects the appropriate two-sided binding under Layout. Historical operating-system lists are useful context, not a promise that every current system has identical controls or support.

The included network port is 10/100 Ethernet. Wireless requires an optional external hardware arrangement and is excluded from this base configuration. The exact technical specification says mobile printing is unsupported. Generic promotional references to ePrint or flash-drive printing do not override that specification or the actual original parts list, which establishes a USB device connection rather than a walk-up host port.

Print functions and workload stay distinct

The engine prints four process colors and is rated up to 20 black or color Letter pages per minute. The original guide separately confirms a 20-ppm A4 rate; no large-page timing was established for this review. None of those maker declarations is a measured result here.

HP recommends 1,500 to 5,000 pages per month, separately from a 75,000-page maximum duty figure. Use the recommended range for planning. A color engine applying its colors in one pass is also unrelated to single-pass scanning: this machine has no physical scanner, original feeder, copier or fax. A suggested accessory elsewhere on a sales page does not create those functions.

Included PIN-release printing remains unconfirmed. The guide's general job-storage wording does not supply an exact included PIN workflow, and an embedded-web-server password is a different security function.

Supplies and installation space

The US package lists preinstalled black toner at about 7,000 declared pages and each color at about 7,300. HP's CE740A/CE741A/CE742A/CE743A declaration uses ISO/IEC 19798 continuous printing, with actual yield varying by use. Those declarations are not a current running-cost estimate or a guarantee of supply condition.

The closed body is 21.5 by 23.6 by 13.3 inches. Its much larger listed maximum arrangement requires room for loading, doors and servicing, plus a suitable support. The exact US electrical row specifies 115–127 VAC at 60 Hz. Choose it for documented wired large-format color and ordinary-paper duplex; choose a different configuration when included wireless, mobile protocols or paper-original capture is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact US Letter black and color up to 20 ppm; original guide separately confirms Letter and A4 20 ppm. No A3/Tabloid speed or measured result inferred. Recommended 1,500–5,000 monthly pages differs from the 75,000-page maximum duty figure.

Paper handling

Standard 100-sheet Tray 1 plus 250-sheet Tray 2; optional 500-sheet Tray 3 excluded. Exact per-tray lists and original ranges support ordinary Letter/Legal/A4/A3/Tabloid in both included paths. Original plain-paper row supports 60–105 g/m² and specifies 75-g/m² basis for the cassette. Automatic duplex range 148 × 182 to 320 × 450 mm covers these five sizes; original guide restricts automatic duplex to at most 105 g/m² despite current heavier general paper-path claims. Up to ten envelopes, at most 90 g/m², use Tray 1 face down/stamp end back, separately from duplex. Output 250 is separate.

Scanning arrangement

Exact print-only laser and complete original parts/control panel establish no physical scanner, original feeder, copy or fax. Four colors applied in one engine pass describe printing, not single-pass duplex scanning. Suggested MFP fax accessories do not create a scanner or fax in this machine.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB 2.0 device connection and built-in 10/100 Ethernet. Wireless requires separately purchased hardware and is excluded. Original USB install connects A-to-B cable only when software prompts; network install connects Ethernet before the Windows installer, with a Network Summary report available from Reports. No flash-drive host printing is established by actual original rear parts/ports.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact US package includes preinstalled black approximately 7,000 and each color approximately 7,300 pages. CE740A black and CE741A cyan/CE742A yellow/CE743A magenta declaration uses ISO/IEC 19798 continuous printing, with composite CMY yield distinguished from individual sample tests. Actual yields vary; no current stock or cost per page claimed.

Software and support

Original desktop drivers and exact current model list HP PCL 6/PCL 5/PostScript level 3 emulation. Verify an actually compatible current OS driver; period OS lists are not a support guarantee. Exact technical specification says mobile printing unsupported, so AirPrint/Mopria are false and no mobile plan is supplied. Generic marketing ePrint/USB-host claims do not override the hardware/mobile specification. Job-storage overview lacks an exact included PIN-release workflow, so PIN stays unknown.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact CE712A#BGJ US body 21.5 × 23.6 × 13.3 inches, 90.2 lb with exact-row cartridge basis unspecified. Listed maximum arrangement is 34 × 42 × 14.6 inches; allow tray/door/service clearance and a suitable support. Exact US power 115–127 VAC at 60 Hz supports the low-voltage configuration, not universal voltage. Maker identifies FCC Class A commercial rather than residential use. No observed exact discontinuation statement or current-stock claim.
