A direct USB printer with a genuine short priority stack

The HP LaserJet 1012 suits a compatible computer producing modest monochrome documents through USB. Its included main tray and ten-sheet priority input provide 160 ordinary sheets combined. The deciding limitation is attendance: the original two-sided routine is manual and Windows-only, while independent network printing is not an included hardware feature.

HP's exact US product record identifies Q2461A#ABA and explicitly marks it discontinued. This is an earlier reference without a current-stock claim. The original exact 1012 electrical row separately documents 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz and 220–240-volt regional versions. Check the actual unit rating; HP warns against converting operating voltage.

Keep the 1012 separate from the parallel-equipped 1015

The original configuration gives the 1012 USB compatible with USB 2.0 specifications and a host-based driver. The rear walkaround and connection section explicitly reserve the parallel port for the 1015. PCL 5e is also identified with that separate model, so neither feature is borrowed for the 1012.

Install an actually compatible printer driver and use the correct USB cable. Period Windows and Mac lists describe historical software, not universal present-system support. The original Mac section describes USB computer printing, but the manual-duplex section expressly limits that workflow to Windows. Confirm the exact driver and intended job before planning an older installation.

No included Ethernet server or wireless radio is established. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held document release remain unconfirmed. The original Confidential watermark is a printed background label, not evidence of PIN-protected release at the machine.

The 1012 is a monochrome print-only printer with no document scanner, flatbed, feeder, copier or fax. A generic driver or management utility cannot add those physical functions.

Count the two ordinary inputs correctly

The main input holds 150 sheets of 20-lb/75-g/m² ordinary paper. The original priority-input description positively allows ten sheets of that ordinary paper, while reserving one-at-a-time handling for an envelope or other suitable special medium. The normal combined count is 160 sheets.

The original supported range and booklet routine establish Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary paper. Load the print face up and top toward the printer, adjust the side and rear guides as appropriate, and straighten the full stack when replenishing it. Priority input is used before the main tray, which can help when the first page needs different paper.

One supported envelope uses priority input. For a main-tray batch, the original allows up to 15. Keep the print face up, top along the left guide, and a short-edge flap entering first when present. Set the actual envelope size and Envelope type in the compatible driver, adjust guides and replace the input cover. Envelope capacity is separate from the ordinary 160-sheet total.

Manual duplex means handling the first-side output

The original Windows routine chooses Print on Both Sides and the intended binding in the compatible driver. After side one prints, remove unused paper, gather and straighten the output, and reload it printed side down with the bottom edge entering first. Replace the priority input tray and press Go to finish the reverse sides.

This is a two-pass process with user intervention, even though the software has a two-sided option. It does not satisfy an automatic-duplex requirement. A historical Mac printing entry does not remove the manual's explicit Windows-only condition for this routine.

HP declares up to 15 one-sided Letter pages per minute and separately 14 A4 for the 1012. These are maker figures rather than measurements here. The original 7,000-page maximum monthly duty is documented, but a maker recommended monthly range remains unconfirmed. The maximum is not used to satisfy a selected recommended-volume requirement.

Check the exact supply and allow access

The original ordering table and HP's exact US compatibility list identify 12A Q2612A. The historical guide describes approximately 2,000 pages at 5% text coverage, density three and EconoMode disabled. HP's current cartridge technical page separately declares approximately 2,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. Those measurement bases remain distinct.

Neither declaration promises the remaining toner in a particular discontinued printer, and no current supply price or cost per page is calculated. Confirm the actual cartridge fitted to the individual unit.

The original unit dimensions are 14.6 inches wide, 9.1 deep and 8.2 high, with 13-pound weight including the cartridge. Allow further tray, output-support, cable and cartridge-access space. Choose the 1012 for prepared USB monochrome work; essential independent networking, scanning or unattended duplex needs different documented hardware.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The exact original 1012 features section explicitly declares up to 15 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 14 A4. Maker ratings are not measured or duplex speed. Original maximum monthly duty is 7,000 single-sided pages; no recommended monthly range established and no maximum substituted for recommendation.

Paper handling

Included main 150 plus genuine ten-sheet ordinary priority input, total 160 regular 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets. Original supported range and explicitly named Letter/Legal/A4 booklet sizes apply to ordinary media. Priority takes precedence over main; load face up/top toward printer, adjust actual side/rear guides, straighten whole stack when replenishing. One supported envelope uses priority, up to 15 use main; print face up/top along left guide and short-edge flap first if present. Select actual envelope size and Envelope type in the compatible driver, adjust guides and replace cover. Ordinary capacity is not an envelope count.

Scanning arrangement

Exact original monochrome print-only architecture with no scanner, document feeder, flatbed, copier or fax. Neither generic software nor optional networking adds document-capture hardware.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact 1012 includes USB compatible with USB 2.0 specifications and a host-based printer driver; parallel port and PCL 5e are reserved for the separate 1015. No included Ethernet or wireless arrangement. Use the correct cable and actually compatible computer software. Historical USB Mac printing is described, but actual manual duplex is explicitly Windows-only. No AirPrint/Mopria/PIN release established.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact original ordering row and current HP US compatibility identify 12A Q2612A. Original historical yield approximately 2,000 pages on Letter/A4 at 5% text coverage, density three and EconoMode off. Current replacement declaration separately gives approximately 2,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. These bases are not merged, and supplied or remaining toner is not promised. No live price or cost per page.

Software and support

Exact original manual duplex is Windows-only: select Print on Both Sides and binding in the compatible driver, print first sides, remove unused input paper, straighten output, reload printed side down/bottom edge first, replace priority input tray and press Go. No automatic duplex mechanism. Historical Windows/Mac listings do not promise a present OS. A Confidential watermark is not PIN-held release; 1015-only parallel/PCL instructions are not transferred to USB 1012.

Electrical edition and setup

Actual exact US Q2461A#ABA discontinued identity plus original exact 1012 low-voltage 110–127-V 50/60-Hz row, separate from 220–240-V regional version. Do not convert operating voltage. Original actual unit body 14.6 W × 9.1 D × 8.2 H inches, 13 lb with cartridge installed. Allow tray/output support, cables and cartridge access beyond body; no carton dimensions substituted. Historical Mac normal printing and Windows-only manual-duplex routine are distinct.
