Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the earlier 1018 print monochrome Legal pages over USB with 150 ordinary sheets and 800 monthly pages?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled, a compatible computer/driver and correct USB cable. Legal fits the documented main feed, and 800 is within the maker recommended maximum.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the printer turn each page over automatically after the first side?
Fails automatic duplex. The actual routine requires manual reloading and clicking Continue on the computer.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the 3,000-page duty ceiling qualify it for 1,500 recommended monthly pages?
Fails that recommendation requirement. The exact maker recommended range ends at 1,000 monthly pages; maximum duty is separate.
Explore this need in the finder →A modest monochrome printer for a compatible USB computer
The HP LaserJet 1018 fits a prepared computer that needs straightforward monochrome documents and a normal 150-sheet paper stack. It connects through USB and provides driver-assisted manual duplex. The deciding tradeoffs are software compatibility and attendance: HP explicitly gives this model no Macintosh support, and two-sided jobs need the user to reload the pages.
HP's exact US page identifies CB419A#ABA and explicitly marks it discontinued. This review is an earlier configuration reference, not a current offer. The original and US technical sections separately document a 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz edition and a 220–240-volt regional version. Match the actual unit rating; separate regional entries do not describe universal-voltage hardware.
Check the computer before assuming USB means ready to print
The original configuration and rear walkaround establish USB 2.0 High Speed as the included computer connection. Connect the correct cable to the printer and then to the computer when prompted by compatible installation software. HP's current specification says to purchase the USB cable separately.
The exact host-based driver is part of the arrangement. Original Windows listings and later support references are useful leads for checking compatibility, but they do not establish every present operating system. HP's specific support notice names the 1018 and says Macintosh support is unavailable. This assessment does not promise an unofficial workaround.
No Ethernet port, wireless radio or network server is included. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held document release remain unconfirmed. The print-only monochrome architecture also has no scanner, document feeder, flatbed, copier or fax. A stray Color LaserJet phrase in one package-description field does not change the actual one-black-cartridge machine.
The ordinary stack is 150 sheets
The main tray holds up to 150 sheets of ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² paper. The current exact main-tray range accommodates Letter, Legal and A4, while the original booklet routine expressly names Letter and A4. Load paper face up with the top toward the printer, adjust the side and front guides, and straighten the whole stack when adding paper.
The priority slot takes one sheet, including a suitable cover page or supported special medium. It is an attended feed, not another ordinary stack, so the normal included count remains 150 sheets. Set the paper type and actual size in the compatible driver rather than relying only on physical fit.
For one supported envelope, use the priority slot. A main-tray batch can hold up to 15 under the original instructions. Keep the print face up and top along the left guide; a short-edge flap enters first when present. Adjust the guides and select the real envelope size and Envelope type in the driver. That count is separate from the ordinary paper capacity.
Manual duplex ends with Continue on the computer
Select Print on Both Sides (Manually) and the binding option in the compatible driver's Finishing settings. After side one prints, gather and straighten the output. Reload it printed side down with the bottom edge entering first, then click Continue on the computer to print side two.
The 1018's original control panel has two status lights. A neighboring printer's Go-button instructions are not substituted for its actual workflow. Manual reloading does not satisfy a requirement for an automatic duplex mechanism.
HP declares up to 12 one-sided Letter pages per minute and separately 12 A4. These are maker ratings rather than measurements here. The current recommended monthly range is 250–1,000 pages, distinct from the 3,000-page maximum duty. A monthly requirement above the recommended maximum does not become suitable simply because the duty ceiling is larger.
Distinguish introductory and replacement toner
The original configuration calls the introductory cartridge 1,000 pages and labels that declaration under ISO/IEC 19752. The current box description uses older 5%-coverage wording for its 1,000-page statement. These source versions are kept distinct, and neither promises remaining toner in an individual discontinued unit.
The replacement is 12A Q2612A, confirmed by the exact original ordering table and HP's US compatibility list. Its current technical page declares approximately 2,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752, with actual yield dependent on content and conditions. No current cost per page is calculated.
The original and current body dimensions agree at 14.6 inches wide, 9.5 deep and 8.2 high. Allow paper support, loading, cables and cartridge access beyond that closed body. Weight remains unconfirmed across differing cartridge bases. Choose the 1018 for a compatible modest USB workload; essential Macintosh support, independent networking or unattended duplex needs other documented hardware.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The exact original 1018 and current US specifications declare up to 12 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 12 A4. Maker ratings are not measurements or duplex throughput. The actual current recommendation of 250–1,000 monthly pages is distinct from maximum duty of 3,000 and the original average of 1,000.
Paper handling
Included main tray holds 150 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets. Current exact main range 5.8×8.27–8.5×14 inches supports Letter/Legal/A4; original booklet routine explicitly names Letter/A4. Single-sheet priority feed is separate and excluded from normal capacity. Load ordinary paper face up/top toward printer, adjust side/front guides and straighten full stack when replenishing. One supported envelope uses priority, or up to 15 use main, print face up/top along left guide with a short-edge flap entering first when present. Select actual envelope size and Envelope type in the compatible driver. Ordinary paper capacity is not an envelope count.
Scanning arrangement
Actual original monochrome print-only architecture and one black cartridge. No scanner, document feeder, flatbed, copier or fax. A stray Color LaserJet phrase in a support package description does not create color-print hardware.
Computer and mobile connections
Included USB 2.0 High Speed with actual compatible computer driver and correct separately purchased USB cable. No included Ethernet, wireless radio or network server. Exact HP support notice explicitly states no Macintosh support for this model; historical Windows lists or later generic UPD links do not guarantee a present system. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held release remain unconfirmed.
Supplies and declared yields
The exact original ordering row and current HP US compatibility map 12A Q2612A. The current replacement technical section declares approximately 2,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. The original configuration calls the introductory cartridge 1,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752; the current box description instead gives 1,000 at 5% coverage. Source-version measurement bases remain distinct; supplied or remaining toner in an individual earlier unit is not guaranteed. No live cost per page.
Software and support
Actual original manual duplex: choose Print on Both Sides (Manually) and binding in compatible driver, print first sides, straighten stack, reload printed side down/bottom edge first, then click Continue on the computer. This model has a two-light control panel; do not borrow a neighboring printer Go-button step. No automatic duplex mechanism. Use actual compatible host-based software. Exact maker notice gives no Macintosh support.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US product identity and discontinued notice, with positively documented low-voltage 110–127-V 50/60-Hz regional edition. Separate 220–240-V regional version is not a universal-voltage promise; do not convert operating voltage. Body 14.6 W × 9.5 D × 8.2 H inches agrees between original and current exact support. Current maximum operating depth 14.2 inches is distinct from closed body. Weight remains unknown against original 5.8 kg with 2,000-page cartridge versus current 5 kg/11 lb unspecified basis; allow cable, paper loading/output and cartridge access.
