LaserJet 1320 (Q5927A#ABA)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A prepared compatible computer needing direct monochrome document printing and unattended reverse-side printing.

The main tradeoff

No included Ethernet or wireless network server, scanner or second tray. Allow the correct driver, rear paper-selector setting and operating clearance.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the earlier base 1320 automatically print Legal pages over USB with 250 ordinary sheets?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled, a compatible computer driver and the rear media selector pushed in for Legal. The single-sheet priority slot is separate from the included 250-sheet stack.

Automatic duplex for one prepared computer

The HP LaserJet 1320 suits a compatible computer that needs monochrome documents and automatic two-sided printing through USB or a genuine parallel connection. Its normal included paper supply is one enclosed 250-sheet tray. The deciding limitation is sharing: this base model does not include the internal network port fitted to the 1320n.

HP's exact US product record identifies Q5927A#ABA and explicitly marks it discontinued. This is an earlier configuration assessment, not a present-stock claim. The original electrical table separately documents 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz and 220–240-volt regional versions. The low-voltage US edition is the configuration covered here; the two regional entries do not make one unit universal voltage.

Identify the base model before connecting it

The original configuration and rear walkaround give the 1320 a USB port compatible with USB 2.0 specifications and an IEEE 1284-B parallel port. For USB, connect the printer cable to the computer when prompted by the compatible installation procedure. For parallel printing, use an actual compatible legacy computer port, suitable cable and driver.

No USB-to-parallel converter is assumed, and a front paper slot is not an additional computer interface. The network server and wireless devices in the accessory list are separate purchases. Their appearance in the family manual does not make Ethernet or Wi-Fi standard on this base unit.

The original 1320 software list includes PCL 5e, PCL 6 and PostScript Level 2 emulation. Those are useful compatibility clues, but the period's Windows and Mac listings do not guarantee that a current computer has the required driver. Establish the exact driver and normal connection before treating an older unit as ready to work. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held job release remain unconfirmed.

Set the rear paper selector as well as the driver

Automatic duplex is positively documented for Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary paper. Close the rear straight-through output door. Push the rear media-size selector in for Letter or Legal; pull it out for A4. Then choose Print on Both Sides in the compatible driver's Finishing controls.

Some historical Mac installations also require the Duplex Unit option to be marked Installed. This setup matters because an automatic mechanism still needs the driver and physical selector to agree with the paper. The declared 22 Letter pages per minute, separately 21 A4, describe one-sided output and are not an automatic-duplex throughput measurement.

This is a monochrome print-only machine. It has no scanner, document feeder, flatbed, standalone copier or fax. Duplex printing cannot create two-sided scanning, and a printer-management web utility is not a document-capture application.

A single-sheet slot does not add another stack

The enclosed main tray holds 250 sheets of 20-lb/75-g/m² ordinary paper. Its documented 147×211–216×356-mm range accommodates Letter, Legal and A4. The priority input takes one sheet at a time and pauses for the instructed Go-button step. Normal included capacity is therefore 250 sheets, rather than 251 or a two-tray configuration.

Load the main stack face down with the top toward the printer, adjust the side and rear guides, and straighten the stack when adding paper. A separately purchased second 250-sheet feeder appears in the 1320 accessory list. It is excluded from the included configuration assessed here.

For an occasional supported envelope, open the rear straight-through output and use the priority slot one envelope at a time. Place the print face up, top edge against the left guide, with a short-edge flap entering first when present. Select Envelope type and the real size in the compatible driver. This attended envelope routine is separate from automatic duplex and the ordinary tray count.

Volume, supplies and desk space need their own checks

The original guide distinguishes a maximum monthly duty of 10,000 one-sided pages from an average of 1,000. An average is not a recommended monthly maximum. A requirement tied to the maker's recommended monthly range remains unconfirmed instead of borrowing the duty ceiling.

HP's exact family yield declaration lists 49A Q5949A at 2,500 standard pages and the higher-yield 49X Q5949X at 6,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. These are replacement declarations, not a promise about the cartridge or remaining toner in an individual discontinued printer. No current supply cost per page is calculated.

The original metric body width and height are 350 and 256 mm, about 13.78 and 10.08 inches. Strict depth and weight remain unconfirmed across differing original presentations and cartridge bases. Leave rear-output, cable, paper-loading and cartridge-access room. The 1320 is useful for prepared direct duplex work; choose separately documented network hardware when independent sharing is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original 1320-family configuration declares maximum 22 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 21 A4. These are maker figures, not measurements here or duplex speed. Original maximum monthly duty 10,000 differs from stated average 1,000; average is not a recommended monthly maximum, so the recommendation range remains unknown. Special-media modes can slow output.

Paper handling

Included enclosed main tray holds 250 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets; the separate single-sheet priority slot is not another normal stack. Main-tray range 147×211–216×356 mm and expressly named Letter/Legal/A4 duplex sizes support those ordinary sizes. Load main paper face down/top toward printer, adjust side/rear guides and straighten the stack when replenishing. One supported envelope at a time uses the priority slot face up/top along left guide, short-edge flap first when present; open rear straight-through output, select Envelope type and actual size in the compatible driver, and press Go as instructed. Automatic duplex is for supported ordinary paper, not envelopes.

Scanning arrangement

Actual original monochrome print-only architecture. No scanner, flatbed, document feeder, copier or fax. A Jetdirect print server or a printer-management web page does not add document capture.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact base 1320 has USB compatible with USB 2.0 plus a real IEEE 1284-B parallel port. No included Ethernet, Wi-Fi radio or network server. Parallel requires a genuine compatible legacy host/cable/driver; no converter assumed. Optional external network/wireless adapters are excluded from the included configuration.

Supplies and declared yields

Original 1320-specific configuration and HP page-yield table identify 49A Q5949A at 2,500 and optional higher-yield 49X Q5949X at 6,000 standard pages, declared under ISO/IEC 19752. Original guide separately describes historical 5%-text-coverage life with density three/EconoMode off; the measurement bases are not merged. Supplied cartridge type and remaining toner are not promised. No current supply price or cost per page calculated.

Software and support

Use the exact compatible computer printer driver and correct cable. Actual 1320-family automatic duplex procedure supports Letter/Legal/A4: close rear straight-through output, push rear media selector in for Letter/Legal or pull it out for A4, then select Print on Both Sides in the compatible driver. Some historical Mac drivers need Duplex Unit marked Installed. PCL 5e/PCL 6/PostScript Level 2 emulation are original 1320 features, but historical Windows/Mac lists do not guarantee present OS compatibility. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held job release remain unconfirmed; a web administrator password is not document-release PIN.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US identity combined with original 110–127-V 50/60-Hz low-voltage edition. The separate 220–240-V regional edition is not a universal-voltage promise; do not convert voltage. Original manual metric width 350 mm agrees with exact-model datasheet, while its 16.8-inch width is an obvious inconsistent unit conversion and is not adopted. Width 13.78 and height 10.08 inches are conversions of the original 350×256-mm body dimensions. Depth remains unknown against 352 versus 355-mm original presentations; weight remains unknown against different stated cartridge/unspecified bases. Allow rear output, paper loading, cables and cartridge access beyond the closed body.
