Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the complete earlier 1320tn print two-sided Legal pages over Ethernet with 500 ordinary sheets?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled, both included 250-sheet trays actually present, the configured network and compatible driver. Set the rear selector in for Legal.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the tn package satisfy a requirement for wireless networking without an adapter?
Fails Wi-Fi. Its extra included hardware is the second paper feeder; the included network connection is wired Ethernet.
Explore this need in the finder →Can its automatic duplex and network port provide two-sided document scanning?
Fails scanning. Automatic duplex concerns printed output; the actual tn hardware has no scanner or document feeder.
Explore this need in the finder →Two included paper stacks for wired duplex work
The HP LaserJet 1320tn makes sense when prepared network computers need monochrome automatic duplex and two included 250-sheet paper trays. Its normal ordinary-paper capacity is 500 sheets. The deciding tradeoff is the package itself: it is taller than the single-tray 1320n, and the extra feeder adds no scanner or wireless radio.
HP's exact US page identifies Q5930A#ABA and explicitly marks the printer discontinued. This assessment covers that earlier US configuration without implying current stock. The original family electrical specification lists a 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz edition separately from a 220–240-volt regional version. Match the unit's rating to the intended supply; those alternatives are not a universal-voltage promise.
The tn hardware must actually include its lower tray
The original model comparison states that the 1320tn has the 1320n's features plus a second 250-sheet input tray. The original HP datasheet independently names the tn with two 250-sheet trays and shows its distinctive lower feeder. A single-tray n with an accessory mentioned in a listing is not automatically the complete tn package.
Each enclosed tray takes up to 250 sheets of ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² paper. The documented tray ranges accommodate Letter, Legal and A4. Thus the included two-tray arrangement supports 500 ordinary sheets of the selected supported size. If the trays hold different paper, their combined headline does not mean 500 sheets of each type.
Load main-tray paper face down with its top toward the printer. Set the side and rear guides for the actual size, and straighten the whole stack when replenishing it. The separate priority input takes one sheet at a time. It is excluded from the normal 500-sheet stack capacity.
Share it through the correct network interface
The included computer connections are USB and internal Jetdirect 10/100 Ethernet. In the original family configuration, the n network port replaces the base printer's IEEE 1284-B parallel port, and the tn inherits that network arrangement. It does not inherit a parallel socket simply because an ordering summary says it is based on the 1320.
For wired sharing, use a suitable network cable and an actual network hub or router, then install a compatible printer driver on the computer. The original procedure checks the network speed light and obtains a network configuration page by holding Go for five seconds. Confirm the address and normal print path before relying on shared access.
USB remains a separate direct computer route. Neither connection establishes included Wi-Fi. The original PCL 5e, PCL 6 and PostScript Level 2 emulation listings are not a guarantee of present operating-system support. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held document release remain unconfirmed; the embedded web server manages the printer rather than proving those features.
Automatic duplex has a real paper-size control
The original automatic two-sided routine explicitly supports Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary paper. Close the straight-through output door and set the rear selector in for Letter or Legal, out for A4. Select Print on Both Sides in the compatible driver. Some historical Mac drivers also require Duplex Unit to be marked Installed.
That gives ordinary print jobs an automatic reverse-side path. It does not turn the printer into a copier or scanner: this is a monochrome print-only engine with no document feeder, flatbed or fax. The 22-Letter-ppm and separate 21-A4-ppm declarations describe one-sided printing, not duplex throughput or measurements performed here.
An occasional supported envelope follows a different routine. Open the rear straight-through exit and feed one envelope into the priority slot, print face up and top along the left guide. Feed a short-edge flap first when present, select the real envelope size and Envelope type, and follow the instructed Go-button step. Do not count envelopes as a 500-sheet ordinary stack or promise automatic envelope duplex.
Supplies and footprint remain practical checks
HP's exact family yield table identifies 49A Q5949A at 2,500 standard pages and 49X Q5949X at 6,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. These replacement declarations do not establish the cartridge supplied or remaining toner in an individual discontinued unit. No live price or cost per page is assumed.
The original guide lists 10,000 monthly pages as maximum duty and 1,000 as an average. The average is not a recommended monthly maximum. A selected requirement for a maker recommended range remains unconfirmed instead of being satisfied by the duty ceiling.
The datasheet's exact tn body row gives 350-mm width and 344-mm height, about 13.78 and 13.54 inches. The lower feeder makes the shared single-tray height unsuitable here. Strict depth and weight remain unconfirmed across original presentations and bases. Allow rear-output, tray and cartridge access. Choose this configuration for the actually included second stack, with compatible wired sharing and ordinary automatic duplex.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original 1320-family configuration declares maximum 22 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 21 A4. These are maker figures, not measurements here or duplex speed. Original maximum monthly duty 10,000 differs from stated average 1,000; average is not a recommended monthly maximum, so the recommendation range remains unknown. Special-media modes can slow output.
Paper handling
Exact tn includes two enclosed 250-sheet trays, total 500 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets. Each original main/extra-tray range is 147×211–216×356 mm, supporting ordinary Letter/Legal/A4. If trays contain different media, 500 is combined capacity, not 500 of each size. Single-sheet priority input is separate and excluded. Load enclosed stacks face down/top toward printer with actual side/rear guide settings. One supported envelope at a time uses priority face up/top along left guide, short-edge flap first if present; rear straight-through output open and correct Envelope driver setting/Go step. Automatic duplex applies to supported ordinary paper, not envelopes.
Scanning arrangement
Actual original monochrome print-only architecture. No scanner, flatbed, document feeder, copier or fax. A Jetdirect print server or a printer-management web page does not add document capture.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact tn inherits n USB and internal Jetdirect RJ-45 10/100 Ethernet; network replaces base parallel. No included parallel port or wireless radio. Network needs actual hub/router, suitable Ethernet cable and compatible computer printer driver. USB is separate. The second feeder is included tn hardware, not an inferred accessory on a base/n printer.
Supplies and declared yields
Original 1320-specific configuration and HP page-yield table identify 49A Q5949A at 2,500 and optional higher-yield 49X Q5949X at 6,000 standard pages, declared under ISO/IEC 19752. Original guide separately describes historical 5%-text-coverage life with density three/EconoMode off; the measurement bases are not merged. Supplied cartridge type and remaining toner are not promised. No current supply price or cost per page calculated.
Software and support
Use the exact compatible computer printer driver and correct cable. Actual 1320-family automatic duplex procedure supports Letter/Legal/A4: close rear straight-through output, push rear media selector in for Letter/Legal or pull it out for A4, then select Print on Both Sides in the compatible driver. Some historical Mac drivers need Duplex Unit marked Installed. PCL 5e/PCL 6/PostScript Level 2 emulation are original 1320 features, but historical Windows/Mac lists do not guarantee present OS compatibility. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held job release remain unconfirmed; a web administrator password is not document-release PIN.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US Q5930A#ABA discontinued identity plus original 110–127-V 50/60-Hz low-voltage edition, separate from 220–240-V regional version; do not convert voltage. Actual datasheet exact tn body row gives 350-mm width and 344-mm height, converted to 13.78 and 13.54 inches. Shared single-tray 256-mm height is not assigned to tn. Strict depth unknown against original 352 versus 355-mm presentations; weight unknown against distinct tn 13.6-kg unspecified-basis and generic installed-cartridge figures. Allow lower-tray loading, rear output, cables and cartridge access.
