Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a genuine compatible parallel computer use the earlier 2100M with 350 ordinary Legal sheets?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and connection left flexible. It requires the real legacy host, correct cable and driver; the included front 100 and lower 250 support ordinary Legal.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the M package include an Ethernet server?
Fails included Ethernet. Original 2100M networking is optional; its standard parallel and LocalTalk interfaces are different connections.
Explore this need in the finder →Does manual duplex provide unattended two-sided printing?
Fails automatic duplex. The actual procedure requires refeeding first-side output through Tray 1 with the binding-specific orientation.
Explore this need in the finder →PostScript included for a prepared legacy computer
The HP LaserJet 2100M fits a maintained older computer installation that needs monochrome printing and included HP PostScript Level 2 emulation. It has 8 MB RAM, a 250-sheet lower tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose input. Its main limitation is the connection arrangement: parallel and LocalTalk belong to its period setup, while Ethernet requires an optional server and USB is not an included host port.
HP's exact US product record identifies C4171A#ABA and explicitly marks the model discontinued. This is an earlier reference, not a current-stock claim. The original guide separately documents 100–127-volt, 50/60-Hz and 220–240-volt regional editions. Check the particular machine's rating plate and use the correct electrical version; HP warns against converting operating voltage.
Check the host port before choosing a cable
The original interface page explicitly gives the 2100M an IEEE 1284 parallel port and a LocalTalk port. The documented normal arrangement here uses a genuine compatible legacy parallel computer, the correct cable and a suitable printer driver. Leaving connection flexible can include this setup; choosing USB or Ethernet cannot substitute for the actual hardware.
The original Mac configuration uses its appropriate serial or LocalTalk connection and requires the installed PostScript emulation. That is a period setup to verify on the actual computer, not a promise of direct USB support on a present Mac. The M package includes the PostScript memory module; the base package's optional-language instructions are different.
The printer also supports infrared communication with a compatible IrDA-equipped device, port driver and printer driver. HP's optical routine calls for facing ports within one metre and a limited angle. The word wireless in that section does not establish Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held release remain unconfirmed.
350 ordinary sheets with distinct loading directions
The included 350-sheet total combines a genuine 100-sheet Tray 1 with one 250-sheet lower tray. The original capacity tables use ordinary 20-lb/80-g/m² paper and explicitly support Letter, Legal and A4 in the lower input; those sizes also fit the front input's range. The optional third tray is not included on the M.
Adjust the actual guides and software's source, size and type to match the loaded paper. For ordinary letterhead, Tray 1 takes the print face up with the top toward the printer. Lower-tray stock goes face down with the top toward the user. Push down the lower tray's metal lift plate when loading it and keep the stack below the height tabs.
Up to ten supported envelopes use Tray 1. Open the rear output bin and fully extend it, place the print face up with the stamp end entering first, and adjust the guides without bending the stack. A flap on the short edge enters first. Choose the actual envelope size and type in compatible software. Envelope count is separate from ordinary-sheet capacity.
Two-sided work requires handling the pages
The original procedure is manual duplex. Print the first sides normally, then use Tray 1 for the second sides, with the already printed face down. For long-edge binding the top edge enters toward the printer; for short-edge binding the bottom edge does. Some original PostScript Windows drivers or applications offer odd/even-page controls, with their own output-order instructions.
This attended refeeding process does not qualify as automatic duplex. The machine is also print-only: no document scanner, flatbed, feeder, copier or fax is included. PostScript and infrared communication do not add document capture.
Keep historical ratings and physical size in context
HP declares a 10-ppm engine, but the read original sections do not explicitly establish a one-sided Letter test basis, so a strict Letter speed remains unconfirmed. The original maximum monthly duty is 15,000 pages; a recommended monthly range is not established.
The C4096A cartridge declaration is approximately 5,000 pages at historical 5% text coverage, density three and EconoMode off. No ISO basis, current toner remainder or live page cost is inferred. Original actual-unit dimensions are 15.9 inches wide, 16.5 deep and 9 high, with 25.4-pound weight including toner. Allow loading, rear output, cables and cartridge access. Choose the 2100M for a verified legacy-host and language requirement; essential modern connectivity or automatic duplex needs different documented hardware.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original HP declares a 10-ppm engine but the actually read original sections do not explicitly label that number as one-sided Letter speed. The strict Letter speed field remains unknown. Original technical data declares up to 15,000 pages maximum monthly duty. A recommended monthly range remains unconfirmed and is not inferred from maximum duty.
Paper handling
Exact 2100M includes front 100 plus lower 250, total 350 ordinary 20-lb/80-g/m² sheets. The exact original paper tables establish Letter, Legal and A4 in each supported normal input. Optional third 250-sheet tray is excluded. Front letterhead goes face up/top toward printer; lower goes face down/top toward user. Push the lower metal lift plate down and keep below tabs. Envelopes use front input up to ten, print face up/stamp end first, short-edge flap first when present; rear output open and fully extended, actual envelope size/type selected. Automatic duplex is unavailable; attended second sides reload printed face down in Tray 1, top first for long-edge binding or bottom first for short-edge binding.
Scanning arrangement
Original monochrome print-only architecture has no document scanner, automatic document feeder, flatbed, copier or fax. Printer infrared communication, JetSend and job-cancel controls do not add document-capture hardware.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact 2100M includes IEEE1284 parallel and LocalTalk, with HP PostScript Level 2 emulation and 8 MB RAM. The normal plan requires a genuine compatible legacy parallel computer, correct cable and driver. Historical Mac serial/LocalTalk needs actual compatible host/software and installed PostScript. No included USB or Ethernet server; JetDirect is optional. Original IrDA needs an optical host and correct port/printer drivers, facing ports within one metre and limited angle. Infrared is not Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct.
Supplies and declared yields
Exact original ordering table identifies C4096A UltraPrecise cartridge. HP declares approximately 5,000 pages under historical 5%-text-coverage conditions, with print density three and EconoMode disabled in the user guide. No ISO basis or current supplied/remaining-toner promise is inferred. Original cartridge declaration is not a live cost-per-page calculation.
Software and support
Use an actually compatible printer driver, host port and cable. Original manual duplex prints the first sides normally, then feeds second sides from Tray 1 printed side down: top edge toward printer for long-edge binding, bottom edge toward printer for short-edge binding. Some original PostScript Windows drivers/applications offer odd/even pages; do not infer PostScript installation on a package where optional. No automatic duplex mechanism. Period operating-system lists do not guarantee present compatibility. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held document release remain unconfirmed.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US C4171A#ABA discontinued identity plus original low-voltage 100–127-V 50/60-Hz configuration, distinct from the 220–240-V version. Do not convert operating voltage. Exact M technical-data body is 15.9 W × 16.5 D × 9 H inches and 25.4 lb; original guide identifies weight with toner cartridge. Shipping measurements excluded. Allow input, rear output, cable and cartridge access beyond the body.
