Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can this earlier USB monochrome printer duplex Legal with 350 included sheets and private PIN release?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a supporting private-job driver. The exact 2300d includes a duplexer and 48 MB; Legal is supported by both trays and the duplexer. PIN jobs are not persistent disk storage.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the standard 2300d directly join wired Ethernet?
Fails for the included configuration. A Jetdirect card is optional on d and included on the n/dn/dtn versions.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a recommended 1,000-page monthly workload established?
Fails that selected essential because a positive applicable recommended monthly range was not established; neither 25 ppm nor another model’s duty figure supplies it.
Explore this need in the finder →The HP LaserJet 2300d is an earlier monochrome printer for a local computer that needs automatic two-sided documents. The d configuration adds a built-in duplexer and 48MB of memory to the ordinary 2300 engine. Its principal tradeoff is connectivity: USB and parallel are standard, while an Ethernet print-server card is extra equipment.
The exact US HP page identifies Q2474A#ABA and marks it discontinued. An actual older unit needs its own condition and compatibility checks. The assessment here interprets the original model descriptions, paper tables and operating instructions; it does not claim a new speed or reliability test.
Automatic output for Letter, Legal and A4
The original guide explicitly assigns the built-in duplexer to 2300d, 2300dn and 2300dtn. It lists Letter, Legal and A4 among the supported automatic-duplex sizes, with a 60–105g/m² paper range. This is more useful than a vague two-sided-printing claim because the ordinary page size and the actual route are documented together.
Follow the driver’s two-sided setting and the required paper orientation. The rear output must be closed for the automatic duplexer to work, and HP warns not to pull a sheet that temporarily projects from the top output during duplexing. A straight-through specialty-media route is a different arrangement. Envelopes, labels and transparencies should not be treated as ordinary duplex stock.
This describes printed output only. There is no scanner, document feeder, integrated copier or fax assembly in this printer’s hardware and function scope. If a paper original needs digitizing, the duplexer cannot do that job.
Direct computer printing with an older software generation
The standard USB and parallel interfaces serve computer printing. The USB description is low/full-speed compatibility, not a claim of a modern high-speed port. The guide identifies the included Jetdirect Ethernet card on n, dn and dtn versions; the 2300d can accept a purchased EIO card, but that expansion is not part of this standard review.
There is no established included Wi-Fi, AirPrint or Mopria route here. A network accessory and a mobile-printing protocol are separate compatibility questions. The original installation instructions are for Windows 95/98/Me/NT4/2000/XP and older Mac OS systems, so confirm a present driver for the exact computer instead of relying on the age-old platform list.
48MB permits a specific private-job workflow
The guide requires 48MB RAM for its job-storage features, and the standard 2300d has that amount. With a supporting driver, a private job can wait for entry of a four-digit PIN at the printer’s control panel. The job selection, PIN and local release are part of the workflow, not a blanket statement about every application or driver.
Private jobs are deleted after release under the described normal behavior, and switching the printer off deletes them. Persistent Stored Job operation is separate and requires an optional hard disk. This distinction matters when comparing an ordinary confidential-release job with permanent storage for repeated printing.
Paper capacity, supplies and inspection
The standard 100-sheet Tray 1 and 250-sheet Tray 2 give a 350-sheet total for suitable 75g/m² plain paper. Both support Letter, Legal and A4. Extra 250- or 500-sheet feeders are optional rather than part of this configuration. In particular, the guide’s optional 500-sheet tray supports Letter and A4, so even an expanded capacity should not be indiscriminately assigned to Legal.
Envelopes use Tray 1 with the rear output and the guide’s material and loading restrictions, up to ten. That is a separate path from automatic duplex, which requires the rear output closed. The two tasks can coexist in a routine, but their settings and paper path must change appropriately.
HP rates this engine at up to 25 one-sided Letter pages per minute or 24 A4 pages per minute. There is no newly measured result here, and no supported recommended monthly range is assigned. The Q2610A cartridge’s historical average 6,000-page declaration assumes five-percent text coverage, density three and EconoMode off; it is not a current supply-cost calculation.
The listed body is 16.2 by 17.7 by 10.2 inches and 31.6 pounds with the cartridge. Leave room for feeding, rear access and servicing, and check the actual US 110–127V label before use. Choose the 2300d for local automatic-duplex black documents when its unit and driver check out. Choose a verified network or multifunction configuration when those functions are essential.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The original guide declares up to 25 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 24 A4 pages per minute, for 2300/2300d/2300n. This is not the slower 2300L rating, a duplex rate or a newly measured result.
Paper handling
Included 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 plus 250-sheet Tray 2 support 350 sheets of 75 g/m² (20 lb) plain paper in Letter, Legal or A4. Extra trays are optional. Envelopes use Tray 1 and rear output, up to ten; never duplex an envelope.
Scanning arrangement
The complete original configuration, interface and printer-task description is a print-only monochrome LaserJet, without scanner, ADF, copier or fax hardware.
Computer and mobile connections
The exact 2300d includes 48 MB RAM and a built-in duplexer. Standard USB and parallel are inherited from the base configuration; a Jetdirect Ethernet card is optional. Automatic duplex supports Letter, Legal and A4 within its media limits.
Supplies and declared yields
Q2610A HP Smart Print Cartridge. The original guide declares an average 6,000 pages at 5% text coverage, toner density 3 and EconoMode off. This historical coverage basis is not relabeled as ISO/IEC 19752; actual life depends on toner use and cartridge components.
Software and support
The original software covers Windows 95/98/Me/NT4/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6–9.x or early OS X. Verify a driver for the actual current computer. No exact AirPrint or Mopria arrangement was established.
Electrical edition and setup
This is the exact US #ABA package with the guide’s 110–127V, 50/60Hz regional configuration. Inspect the actual label; 220–240V models are separate and the guide forbids voltage conversion. Body dimensions exclude tray, rear-output and service access.
