Automatic two-sided printing without an included network server

The HP LaserJet 2420d is useful for a verified compatible computer that needs ordinary monochrome documents turned automatically. This exact package combines a built-in duplexer, 350-sheet ordinary-paper input and USB computer connection. Its deciding limit is networking: the d does not include the embedded Ethernet server supplied with a separate dn configuration.

HP's exact US page identifies Q5957A#ABA and marks the printer discontinued. The original US configuration column independently names the 2420d, its 48 MB memory and automatic duplex mechanism. This assessment covers the documented low-voltage edition as an earlier reference, without promising current stock, present driver support or the condition of an individual machine.

Make the USB computer installation real

The included direct interface is Hi-Speed USB 2.0, alongside IEEE 1284B parallel. Use a correct cable and an actually compatible computer driver. The period Windows instructions install software before attaching the cable, exclude Windows NT 4.0 from USB and warn against connecting USB and parallel at the same time.

PCL 6, PCL 5e and PostScript Level 3 emulation are printer languages, not guarantees that the original software will install on a present system. The original direct-PDF provision requires at least 128 MB of printer memory, above the d's standard 48 MB. Optional memory cannot be counted as included.

A JetDirect server can be an optional upgrade, but neither that server nor an optional wireless adaptor supplies a standard Ethernet, Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct match. AirPrint and Mopria remain unconfirmed. Check the driver installation and the duplex controls on the computer you actually intend to use.

Prepare the paper path for the duplex job

The built-in duplexer supports Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary paper at 60–105 g/m². Close the rear output; the automatic mechanism does not function while that bin is open. Choose Print on Both Sides in the compatible driver's Finishing controls, set the intended binding and send the job. Do not pull a sheet that partly emerges while it is being turned.

For two-sided letterhead, the original automatic procedure puts the front side down and bottom edge first in Tray 1. In the lower input, put the front side up and top edge toward the back of the tray. This differs from ordinary one-sided loading. Alternative Letterhead mode also changes the loading requirement when Letterhead or Preprinted is selected as the media type.

Unsupported weights or sizes, and the driver's Straight Paper Path selection, require manual handling instead. Labels, transparencies and vellum must not be printed on both sides. An automatic ordinary-paper capability does not make every specialty medium suitable for the mechanism.

The normal capacity is 350 ordinary sheets

The front multipurpose input holds 100 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets and the lower input holds 250. Letter, Legal and A4 are supported across both, giving 350 for those ordinary sizes. The optional 500-sheet third tray is excluded from this standard package.

Extend the front support for longer sheets, center the stack below its guide tabs and bring the guides against it without bending paper. Set the lower tray's width and length pointers to the actual size, keep paper flat below the height tabs and push down to lock its metal lift plate before reinserting the tray. Match the job's source, size and type.

For supported envelopes, use up to ten in Tray 1 with the face up and stamp end first, or short-edge flap first when present. Open the rear output fully and extend its support to reduce curl. This is a one-sided envelope route, separate from the rear-closed automatic document routine.

Use Private Job through a compatible driver

The 2420d includes 48 MB, meeting the original manual's stated memory prerequisite for job storage. For a private job, choose Private Job in the compatible driver and assign a four-digit PIN. At the printer, open Retrieve Job, select the user and job, choose Print and enter the PIN using the panel controls.

The manual says stored jobs are lost when power is turned off, and private jobs normally delete after release. Use clear job names to avoid replacing another job with the same default name. This is a documented PIN-held printing routine, not a claim of network encryption or permanent archiving.

Allow space and distinguish workload figures

This is print-only hardware without scanning, copying or fax. The declared speed is up to 30 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 28 A4; no test or duplex speed is claimed here. Maximum monthly duty is 75,000 pages, while a recommended monthly range remains unknown.

The closed unit measures 16.7 inches wide, 15.7 deep and 10.2 high. The guide gives 33.5 pounds without the cartridge, separately from the brochure's 36-pound figure. Allow opening and loading space, and inspect the actual 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz plate. Original replacement-cartridge yields do not establish installed toner remainder or current cost per page.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact 2420d source scope declares up to 30 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 28 A4. These are maker figures, not measured or duplex speeds. Maximum monthly duty is 75,000 pages; no recommended monthly range is established.

Paper handling

Exact 2420d includes 100 plus 250 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets, total 350 for Letter, Legal and A4. Optional third tray excluded. Match guides, source/type/size; keep below tabs and lock lower lift plate before reinsertion. Included automatic duplex supports ordinary Letter/Legal/A4 at 60–105 g/m² with rear output closed and compatible driver Print on Both Sides. Two-sided letterhead: front side down/bottom first in Tray 1; lower front side up/top toward back. Straight Paper Path and unsupported media need separate manual handling. Up to ten envelopes use front face up/stamp first, short-edge flap first when present, rear output fully open/extended; never two-sided envelopes.

Scanning arrangement

Actual original hardware is a monochrome print-only printer. No scanner, flatbed, automatic document feeder, copier or fax is included. Printer-management e-mail alerts and third-party forms software do not add document capture or a telephone fax modem.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Hi-Speed USB 2.0 computer interface and IEEE 1284B parallel; exact network provision is stated separately for this configuration. Use the correct cable and actually compatible computer driver. Original direct Windows installation calls for software before cable connection and forbids simultaneous USB and parallel cables; Windows NT 4.0 does not support USB. Historic Mac, Windows and network lists do not promise current compatibility. Optional wireless/Gigabit servers, Bluetooth and the period Mobile Print Driver are not included Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint or Mopria.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact US original lists Q6511A at 6,000 and Q6511X at 12,000 standard pages with ISO/IEC 19752 footnote. Earlier 2004 guide describes the same counts at historical 5% text coverage; those are different source declarations, not an invented new test. An original cartridge-in-box listing does not establish the installed cartridge remainder or present included full yield. No current price or cost per page is calculated.

Software and support

Exact 2420d includes 48 MB, meeting the original 48-MB job-storage requirement. Compatible computer driver Private Job assigns a four-digit PIN; panel Retrieve Job selects user/job/Print and accepts PIN. Power-off deletes held jobs; private jobs normally delete after release. No optional storage prerequisite is invented. Original direct PDF 1.3 needs 128 MB and is not included at 48 MB. PCL 6/PCL 5e/PostScript 3 and automatic duplex require an actually compatible driver; historic lists do not establish present compatibility.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US Q5957A#ABA identity and original 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz edition, separate from 220–240 V. Inspect the actual plate and do not convert voltage. Closed unit 16.7 W × 15.7 D × 10.2 H inches; guide weight 33.5 lb explicitly without cartridge, distinct from brochure 36 lb. Fully open doors/trays require up to 26.6 W × 28.7 D inches, with suitable access and ventilation.
