Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a wired Ethernet computer automatically duplex Legal documents with 350 sheets and Private Job PIN release?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled. The exact dn includes 10/100 Ethernet, Legal automatic duplex and 64 MB for the documented four-digit driver/panel routine; keep rear output closed for duplex.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the embedded Ethernet interface join my Wi-Fi network without an additional server?
Fails included Wi-Fi. The standard 10/100Base-TX interface is wired; wireless servers are optional.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the dn scan a Legal original to a computer through the network?
Fails scanning. This exact hardware is print-only and includes no flatbed or document feeder.
Explore this need in the finder →A wired workgroup package with the duplexer included
The HP LaserJet 2420dn suits a prepared wired office that needs ordinary monochrome documents, automatic two-sided printing and a 350-sheet normal input. The exact dn package combines an embedded 10/100Base-TX Ethernet server with the duplex mechanism. Its main limit is scope: this remains an earlier print-only machine with no included Wi-Fi radio or scanner.
HP's exact US page identifies Q5959A#ABA and declares the printer discontinued. The actual original US comparison column confirms the dn's 64 MB memory, network server and duplex provision. This assessment covers its documented low-voltage configuration, without assuming stock, condition or a compatible current driver.
Set up the real wired computer route
Connect the embedded Ethernet interface to the suitable local network and install an actually compatible computer printer driver. The original network procedure prints a configuration page, finds the printer's IP address on its second page and uses that address during installation. This is a useful setup check, rather than an assumption that any nearby computer will discover the unit.
Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284B parallel are also included for direct computer printing. Use the correct cable and compatible driver for the selected route; the original Windows procedure installs software before the direct cable and prohibits connecting USB and parallel simultaneously. Windows NT 4.0 is specifically excluded from USB.
The original language support includes PCL 6, PCL 5e and PostScript Level 3 emulation. Those languages and historic operating-system lists do not promise present compatibility. Optional wireless or Gigabit JetDirect servers do not change the included interface into Wi-Fi or Gigabit Ethernet. AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct remain unconfirmed.
Load ordinary paper for the actual job
The included front input holds 100 ordinary sheets and the lower input holds 250, giving 350 at the documented 20-lb/75-g/m² basis. Letter, Legal and A4 are positively supported across both. The optional 500-sheet feeder is excluded from the standard capacity and body configuration.
Set the lower tray's width and rear length pointers to the actual paper size, keep all four stack corners flat below the height tabs and push down to lock the lift plate before reinsertion. In the front input, extend the support for long paper and keep the centered stack below its guide tabs. Choose the same size, source and type in the job.
Automatic duplex supports ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 at 60–105 g/m². Close the rear output and select Print on Both Sides in the compatible driver's Finishing controls. For automatic letterhead, put the front side down and bottom edge first in Tray 1, or front side up and top toward the back in the lower tray. Select the intended binding and leave partly exiting sheets alone.
Keep specialty paths separate from automatic duplex
The driver’s Straight Paper Path setting and unsupported sizes or weights require manual handling. Labels, transparencies and vellum must not be printed on both sides. A document duplexer is not permission to send every specialty medium through it.
Supported envelopes use up to ten in Tray 1, face up with stamp end first, or short-edge flap first when present. Open the rear output fully and extend its support to reduce curl. Match the envelope size in software. This one-sided route can coexist with normal office documents, but it uses the opposite rear-bin position from automatic duplex.
Use the documented four-digit release routine
The dn's included 64 MB exceeds the manual's 48-MB job-storage prerequisite. With a compatible computer driver, select Private Job and assign a four-digit PIN. At the printer, use Retrieve Job, select the user and job, choose Print and enter the PIN using the panel arrows and Select control.
Power-off deletes stored jobs, and private jobs normally delete after printing. Give jobs distinct names to avoid replacing one with the same default name. This is a genuine held-print routine; it does not establish network encryption or permanent document storage. The original direct-PDF feature separately requires at least 128 MB, above the standard memory.
Understand the ratings and placement requirement
The manufacturer declares up to 30 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 28 A4, and 75,000 pages maximum monthly duty. No speed was measured here. A recommended monthly range remains unconfirmed, so the maximum-duty rating is not treated as a normal workload recommendation. The printer has no scanner, flatbed, document feeder, copier or fax.
The closed body is 16.7 inches wide, 15.7 deep and 10.2 high. The guide gives 33.5 pounds without the cartridge, distinct from the brochure's 36-pound figure. Allow loading, open-bin, cable and cartridge access, and check the actual 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz plate. Original Q6511A and Q6511X replacement yields do not establish installed toner remainder or current cost.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact 2420dn scope declares up to 30 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 28 A4; not measured or duplex speed. Maximum monthly duty is 75,000 pages, while recommended monthly range is unconfirmed.
Paper handling
Exact 2420dn includes front 100 plus lower 250 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets, total 350 Letter/Legal/A4; optional third tray excluded. Match size/type/source, stack below tabs and lock lower lift plate before reinsertion. Automatic duplex supports ordinary Letter/Legal/A4 at 60–105 g/m² with rear output closed and compatible driver Print on Both Sides. Automatic letterhead uses front side down/bottom first in Tray 1, or lower front side up/top toward back. Straight Paper Path and unsupported media require manual handling. Up to ten envelopes use front face up/stamp end first, short-edge flap first when present, rear bin fully open/extended; no two-sided envelopes.
Scanning arrangement
Actual original hardware is a monochrome print-only printer. No scanner, flatbed, automatic document feeder, copier or fax is included. Printer-management e-mail alerts and third-party forms software do not add document capture or a telephone fax modem.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact 2420dn includes embedded 10/100Base-TX Ethernet, Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284B parallel. Use the compatible computer driver and correct local connection. Original network installation checks the configuration page and second-page IP address. Original direct Windows installation calls for software before cable and excludes NT 4.0 USB; never connect USB and parallel simultaneously. Historic network/OS lists do not guarantee present compatibility. Wireless/Gigabit servers optional; included Ethernet is not Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct, and AirPrint/Mopria remain unconfirmed.
Supplies and declared yields
Exact US original lists Q6511A at 6,000 and Q6511X at 12,000 standard pages with ISO/IEC 19752 footnote. Earlier 2004 guide describes the same counts at historical 5% text coverage; those are different source declarations, not an invented new test. An original cartridge-in-box listing does not establish the installed cartridge remainder or present included full yield. No current price or cost per page is calculated.
Software and support
Exact 2420dn includes 64 MB, meeting the original 48-MB job-storage prerequisite. Compatible computer driver Private Job assigns four-digit PIN; panel Retrieve Job selects user/job/Print and accepts PIN. Power-off deletes held jobs; private jobs normally delete after release. This is not encryption or permanent archiving. Original direct PDF 1.3 requires at least 128 MB, above standard memory. PCL 6/PCL 5e/PostScript 3, private printing and duplex need actual compatible driver controls.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US Q5959A#ABA identity plus original 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz edition, separate from 220–240 V; inspect actual plate and do not convert voltage. Closed body is 16.7 W × 15.7 D × 10.2 H inches. Guide weight 33.5 lb explicitly excludes print cartridge; brochure 36 lb has a different basis. Fully open doors/trays need up to 26.6 W × 28.7 D inches, plus access and ventilation.
