Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a compatible Ethernet computer automatically duplex Legal documents with 850 sheets and Private Job PIN release?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled. The exact dtn includes all three ordinary Legal-capable inputs, automatic duplex and 64 MB for the documented four-digit driver/panel routine; close rear output for duplex.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it scan and copy a Legal original using an included document feeder?
Fails scanning and copying. The 2430dtn is print-only; its automatic duplexer turns printed sheets and is not a scanner or feeder.
Explore this need in the finder →Does 100,000 maximum-duty pages establish a recommended 5,000-page monthly workload?
Fails that selected workload check because a recommended monthly maximum is unconfirmed. Maximum duty is a different rating.
Explore this need in the finder →The three-tray configuration also includes automatic duplex
The HP LaserJet 2430dtn fits a prepared wired computer network needing ordinary monochrome documents, 850 included sheets and automatic two-sided printing. Unlike the manual-duplex tn, this exact package includes the turning mechanism as well as its extra paper tray and Ethernet server. Its limitations are the earlier software environment and print-only hardware.
HP's exact US product page identifies Q5962A#ABA and marks the printer discontinued. The original US comparison and ordering columns independently establish the dtn's 64 MB memory, three normal inputs, embedded network server and automatic duplexer. This assessment covers its documented low-voltage US edition, without promising current stock, machine condition or present driver availability.
Connect a compatible computer through the actual interface
The embedded JetDirect interface is wired 10/100Base-TX Ethernet. The original network installation checks a printed configuration page and finds the IP address on its second page before setting up the computer. Use a genuinely compatible driver and the suitable network arrangement; the socket does not establish driverless printing from every present device.
Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284B parallel are also included for direct computer printing. The original Windows instructions install software before connecting the selected cable, exclude Windows NT 4.0 from USB and warn against attaching USB and parallel simultaneously. Historic Windows, Mac and printer-language support still needs checking against your actual computer.
Optional wireless or Gigabit servers are not standard hardware. No Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint or Mopria route is established. The original direct-PDF feature separately needs at least 128 MB of printer memory, above the included 64 MB; it is not an included substitute for the compatible driver.
Use the full ordinary-paper supply without borrowing specialty capacity
The normal input is 100 sheets in the front multipurpose tray, 250 in the lower tray and 500 in the supplied third input, giving 850 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets. Actual size and loading tables establish Letter, Legal and A4 across these inputs. This count describes the included package, not an optional maximum.
Set each lower input's length and width guides for its actual paper and keep stacks below their marked limits. Lock Tray 2's metal lift plate down before reinsertion, and follow Tray 3's separate height-hook instructions. Extend the front support for longer paper and keep its centered stack beneath the guide tabs. Match size, source and type in the job.
Do not use an 850-sheet headline for envelopes or specialty media. Those follow the front path and their own limits. A mix of loaded sizes also does not mean 850 sheets of each size are simultaneously available; the size-specific capacity assumes all relevant normal inputs contain the selected ordinary size.
Close the rear output for automatic turning
The included duplexer supports ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 at 60–105 g/m². Close the rear output and select Print on Both Sides in the compatible driver's Finishing controls, with the intended binding. Do not pull a partially emerging sheet while the mechanism completes the turn.
For automatic letterhead, load Tray 1 with the front side down and bottom edge first. In the lower inputs, put the front side up and top edge toward the back. This differs from ordinary one-sided letterhead loading. Alternative Letterhead mode likewise requires the documented two-sided orientation when the matching media type is selected.
Straight Paper Path and unsupported sizes or weights require manual handling. Labels, transparencies and vellum must not be printed on both sides. Supported envelopes use a separate one-sided routine: up to ten face up in Tray 1, stamp end first or short-edge flap first when present, with the rear output fully open and extended.
Release private computer jobs with a four-digit PIN
The dtn's 64 MB meets the manual's 48-MB storage prerequisite. A compatible driver can select Private Job and assign a four-digit PIN. At the printer, choose Retrieve Job, the user and job, then Print, and enter the PIN using the panel controls. This is a documented held-print function rather than a generic password claim.
Use distinct job names because a duplicate default name can replace a prior job. Private jobs normally delete after release, and power-off deletes held jobs. The routine does not establish permanent storage or encrypted network transmission.
Check the taller body, power edition and workload evidence
The manufacturer declares up to 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 33 A4, and 100,000 pages maximum monthly duty. These are not tests here, duplex speeds or a recommended monthly range. That recommendation remains unconfirmed. The hardware includes no scanner, flatbed, feeder, copier or fax.
The closed three-tray body is 16.7 inches wide, 15.7 deep and 15.7 high. The guide gives 46 pounds without the cartridge, separate from the brochure's 48.5-pound figure. Allow opening, loading and cartridge access beyond the body; check the actual 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz plate. Original replacement-cartridge yields do not reveal installed toner remainder or current cost per page.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact 2430dtn scope declares up to 35 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 33 A4; no measured or duplex speed asserted. US original maximum monthly duty 100,000 pages is distinct from the unconfirmed recommended monthly range.
Paper handling
Exact 2430dtn includes normal 100-sheet front, 250-sheet lower and 500-sheet third inputs, total 850 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² Letter/Legal/A4 sheets. Size-specific capacity assumes relevant trays all hold that ordinary size. Match each tray guides/type/size/source and stack limits; lock Tray 2 lift plate before reinsertion. Included automatic duplex supports ordinary Letter/Legal/A4 at 60–105 g/m², rear output closed and compatible driver Print on Both Sides. Automatic letterhead uses front side down/bottom first in Tray 1, or lower front side up/top toward back. Straight Paper Path and unsupported media need manual handling. Up to ten envelopes use front face up/stamp first, short-edge flap first when present, rear output fully open/extended; never automatic envelope duplex.
Scanning arrangement
Actual original hardware is a monochrome print-only printer. No scanner, flatbed, automatic document feeder, copier or fax is included. Printer-management e-mail alerts and third-party forms software do not add document capture or a telephone fax modem.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact 2430dtn includes embedded JetDirect 10/100Base-TX Ethernet, Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284B parallel. Compatible computer network driver uses actual configuration-page IP address; direct USB needs correct cable/driver. Original NT 4.0 USB excluded and simultaneous USB/parallel prohibited. Historic OS/language lists do not guarantee current compatibility. Wireless/Gigabit servers optional; standard Ethernet is not Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct, and AirPrint/Mopria remain unconfirmed.
Supplies and declared yields
Exact US original lists Q6511A at 6,000 and Q6511X at 12,000 standard pages with ISO/IEC 19752 footnote. Earlier 2004 guide describes the same counts at historical 5% text coverage; those are different source declarations, not an invented new test. An original cartridge-in-box listing does not establish the installed cartridge remainder or present included full yield. No current price or cost per page is calculated.
Software and support
Exact 2430dtn includes 64 MB, meeting original 48-MB job-storage prerequisite. Compatible driver Private Job assigns four-digit PIN; panel Retrieve Job selects user/job/Print and accepts PIN. Duplicate default job names can replace a prior job; power-off deletes held jobs and private jobs normally delete after release. No encryption or permanent archiving promise. Direct PDF 1.3 requires at least 128 MB, above included memory. Actual compatible driver controls provide the documented automatic duplex and PIN job routes.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US Q5962A#ABA identity and original 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz edition, separate from 220–240 V; inspect actual rating plate and do not convert voltage. Included-three-tray closed body is 16.7 W × 15.7 D × 15.7 H inches. Guide weight 46 lb explicitly excludes print cartridge; brochure 48.5 lb is a different basis. Fully open doors/trays need up to 26.6 W × 28.7 D inches, plus access and ventilation. Smaller n body and shipping dimensions excluded.
