A verified compatible wired computer network needing ordinary monochrome documents and four-digit held-print release.

The main tradeoff

No automatic duplex or included third tray. Wireless and mobile protocols are not established, and the actual driver needs checking.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible Ethernet computer print ordinary Legal documents at a declared 35 Letter ppm with 350 sheets and PIN-held release?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled. The actual n has 10/100 Ethernet, 350 ordinary Legal sheets and 64 MB for the documented driver/panel PIN routine; the 35-ppm figure is one-sided Letter.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does every 2430 package include 850 ordinary sheets?

Fails an 850-sheet included-capacity requirement. The exact US 2430n has 100 plus 250 sheets; its third tray is optional.

Can the n automatically turn both sides of Letter paper?

Fails automatic duplex. The documented n uses attended stack reloading through Tray 1; the dtn duplexer is not included.

The network model keeps the smaller paper arrangement

The HP LaserJet 2430n fits a verified wired computer network needing monochrome documents and a declared one-sided Letter rate up to 35 pages per minute. Its normal configuration includes Ethernet, 64 MB memory and 350 ordinary sheets. The important limitation is that n supplies networking without the extra tray or automatic duplex of other 2430 packages.

HP's exact US product page identifies Q5964A#ABA and marks the printer discontinued. The original US comparison explicitly lists the 2430n with a 100-sheet front input and 250-sheet lower input. This matters because a separate regional brochure groups different 2430 tray packages; that broader regional arrangement is not imported into the actual US n model.

Plan a compatible wired computer installation

The embedded JetDirect server connects to 10/100Base-TX Ethernet. For the original computer-network setup, print the configuration page and check the IP address on its second page before installing the compatible printer driver. It is a wired interface, not an included wireless radio or a guarantee that any present device can print without software.

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284B parallel are also included. The original Windows direct procedure installs the software before connecting the selected cable and warns against USB and parallel connections at the same time. Windows NT 4.0 cannot use the USB route. Historic Windows and Macintosh lists describe period support, so verify the actual computer and available driver.

The included PCL and PostScript language support does not resolve that compatibility by itself. Optional Gigabit or wireless servers, Bluetooth adaptors and the period Mobile Print Driver are separate provisions. No AirPrint, Mopria or Wi-Fi Direct route is established here.

Count 350 sheets before choosing a refill routine

The 100-sheet front and 250-sheet lower inputs provide 350 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets. Both support ordinary Letter, Legal and A4. The 500-sheet third input is optional for this exact 2430n, so neither an 850-sheet capacity nor the taller tn body is included.

Use the front support extension for long sheets and keep paper centered under its guide tabs. Set the lower width and length guides to the actual size, flatten all four corners below the height tabs and lock the metal lift plate down before pushing the tray back. Match the job's source, type and size.

One-sided letterhead loads face up with the top toward the printer in Tray 1, or face down with the top toward the user in the lower tray. If Alternative Letterhead mode is enabled for Letterhead or Preprinted media, follow the two-sided orientation instead. A job setting can therefore change loading even when the printer hardware is unchanged.

The two-sided option still needs a person

The 2430n has driver-assisted manual duplex. Select Print on Both Sides in the compatible driver's Finishing controls, let the first sides print and remove unused paper from Tray 1. Insert the printed stack there with the blank side up and top edge first, then press Select if the panel requests it.

Second sides must feed from Tray 1. Repeat the handling when the job exceeds that input's capacity; other documents cannot print while the printer waits for reinsertion. This route does not meet an automatic-duplex requirement. The 2430dtn's included duplexer is a separate configuration, not an inferred feature of n.

For supported envelopes, load up to ten face up in Tray 1 with stamp end first, or short-edge flap first when present. Open the rear output and fully extend its support, adjust guides without bending the stack and choose the actual envelope size. Never print both sides of an envelope.

Private jobs are different from automatic duplex

The included 64 MB meets the original 48-MB storage prerequisite. A compatible computer driver can mark a job Private Job and attach a four-digit PIN. At the panel, choose Retrieve Job, the user and job, Print, and the PIN. This lets a user release the queued document at the printer even though its two-sided page handling remains manual.

Power-off deletes held jobs, and a private job normally deletes after release. Distinct job names avoid replacing a prior job with the same default name. The original direct-PDF feature requires at least 128 MB and is excluded at the standard memory. No permanent archive or network-encryption promise is inferred.

Leave room and keep workload ratings in context

The declared 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute is separate from 33 A4 and is not a measured or duplex result. Maximum monthly duty is 100,000 pages, while the recommended monthly range remains unknown. This print-only hardware has no scanner, flatbed, document feeder, copier or fax.

The closed body is 16.7 inches wide, 15.7 deep and 10.2 high. The guide's 33.5-pound weight excludes the cartridge. Allow open-tray and cartridge access beyond the body, verify the actual US low-voltage plate and check installed supplies. Original replacement yields do not establish remaining toner, stock or current cost per page.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact 2430n scope declares up to 35 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 33 A4; not measured or duplex speed. Original US maximum monthly duty is 100,000 pages, with no recommended monthly range established.

Paper handling

Exact US 2430n column includes 100-sheet front and 250-sheet lower inputs, giving 350 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² Letter/Legal/A4 sheets. Extra 500-sheet input is optional for this n model; tn/dtn capacity is excluded. Match guides/type/size/source, stack below tabs and lock lower lift plate. One-sided letterhead uses front face up/top toward printer or lower face down/top toward user; Alternative Letterhead mode changes orientation. Manual duplex needs first-side stack reloaded in Tray 1 blank side up/top first and Select if prompted. Up to ten envelopes use front face up/stamp end first, short-edge flap first when present, rear output fully open/extended; no automatic or envelope duplex.

Scanning arrangement

Actual original hardware is a monochrome print-only printer. No scanner, flatbed, automatic document feeder, copier or fax is included. Printer-management e-mail alerts and third-party forms software do not add document capture or a telephone fax modem.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact 2430n includes embedded JetDirect 10/100Base-TX Ethernet, Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284B parallel, positively established by exact US original and guide feature/network sections despite omission from one generic port illustration. Compatible network driver uses actual configuration-page IP address. Direct USB needs proper cable/driver; NT 4.0 USB excluded, simultaneous USB/parallel prohibited. Optional wireless/Gigabit servers and Bluetooth are not standard; AirPrint/Mopria/Wi-Fi Direct remain unconfirmed.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact US original lists Q6511A at 6,000 and Q6511X at 12,000 standard pages with ISO/IEC 19752 footnote. Earlier 2004 guide describes the same counts at historical 5% text coverage; those are different source declarations, not an invented new test. An original cartridge-in-box listing does not establish the installed cartridge remainder or present included full yield. No current price or cost per page is calculated.

Software and support

Exact 2430n includes 64 MB, meeting guide 48-MB job-storage prerequisite. Compatible driver Private Job attaches a four-digit PIN; panel Retrieve Job selects user/job/Print and accepts PIN. Power-off deletes held jobs, private jobs normally delete after release, and distinct job names avoid replacement. Direct PDF 1.3 needs at least 128 MB, above standard memory. PCL 6/PCL 5e/PostScript 3 do not guarantee a present compatible driver. Manual duplex remains attended even when PIN release works.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US Q5964A#ABA identity and original 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz configuration, separate from 220–240 V; inspect actual plate and do not convert voltage. Closed actual n body is 16.7 W × 15.7 D × 10.2 H inches; guide weight 33.5 lb explicitly without cartridge, distinct from brochure 36 lb. Fully open doors/trays need up to 26.6 W × 28.7 D inches, plus access and ventilation. Taller tn/dtn body and shipping measurements excluded.
