Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the earlier 3390 combine monochrome Legal printing, color Legal feeder files, copy and telephone fax through a native Ethernet computer setup with 250 normal sheets?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled, actual compatible full software and proper fax line/cord. Legal capture uses the single-sided feeder, not the Letter/A4 glass. Optional Tray 3 and one-sheet slot do not increase included normal capacity.
Explore this need in the finder →Can its USB full solution provide A4 color flatbed files plus automatic two-sided printing when print paper size stays flexible?
Qualifies with compatible actual driver/software and earlier references enabled. The glass supports A4; automatic print duplex is positive, but its exact size subset is unconfirmed, so no specific duplex paper size is promised.
Explore this need in the finder →Does two-sided standalone copying establish automatic two-sided feeder files on an Ethernet computer?
Fails the computer duplex-scan requirement. Original TWAIN and WIA drivers explicitly exclude duplex scanning; the standalone 2-to-2 copy routine is separate.
Explore this need in the finder →A wired monochrome office MFP with distinct print, copy and scan rules
The HP LaserJet 3390 All-in-One combines monochrome printing, copying and telephone fax with color computer scanning. Its useful arrangement is a compatible USB computer or a wired Ethernet network, a 250-sheet normal paper tray and a 50-sheet document feeder. It suits a documented earlier-office workflow when the actual software and machine remain appropriate for the job.
The exact HP US store identifies Q6500A#ABA and explicitly marks it discontinued. The reviewed US edition requires 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz mains power. Original tables separately identify 220–240-volt editions and warn against voltage conversion. The precise electrical label on a prospective unit still matters.
A central distinction is easy to miss: automatic two-sided printing and two-sided standalone copying do not establish automatic two-sided computer scanning. The original software technical reference explicitly says its TWAIN and WIA scan drivers do not support duplex scanning. This review therefore qualifies the established computer feeder route as single-sided, even though the control panel has a separate two-sided copy function.
Use the actual USB or network scan installation
Standard interfaces are a high-speed USB host connection and built-in 10/100 Ethernet. The original connection matrix positively supports computer scanning and PC-fax functions for a direct USB installation and for a native network installation. A compatible full software solution is essential; finding a print driver alone does not prove that all capture functions work with a current operating system.
Windows uses HP LaserJet Scan or compatible TWAIN/WIA applications. The historical Mac route uses HP Director and its scan software. Files can be saved to the computer. Optical character recognition requires the separately installed Readiris software rather than being an automatic property of every PDF capture.
Network panel behavior differs from USB. The original reference says the direct Start Scan button launches the USB computer's software, while initiating a scan from the networked device is disabled by default and requires configuration in the scan software. The target computer and required software must be running. Email attachment functions use the computer's compatible mail client; they are not an independent SMTP sending system.
Sharing a USB-connected printer through another computer is also a different arrangement. Other users of that shared print queue do not gain network scanning or fax control. Use the native Ethernet arrangement when those documented network functions are required. Included infrastructure Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, native AirPrint and Mopria are not established here.
Choose the correct original-document path
The flatbed is explicitly Letter/A4 size and can capture color at up to 1,200 ppi. The much larger interpolated resolution quoted in old software material is not optical detail. A complete Legal original needs the feeder rather than assigning its maximum length to the glass.
The 50-sheet feeder's confirmed Letter, Legal and A4 range supports ordinary single-sided computer files. Its scan instructions load originals face up, top edge first, and adjust the guides. Fragile pages, books and photographs belong on the glass instead of being forced through the rollers.
For standalone copying, the original manual separately documents 1-to-2 and 2-to-2 routines using the control-panel two-sided setting and the feeder. Those produce paper copies. They do not remove the explicitly documented desktop driver limitation. If automatic two-sided scan files are essential, choose a model whose actual computer scan route positively supports that function.
Printing capacity is 250 normal sheets
Tray 2 holds 250 sheets at the original 80 g/m² basis. Tray 1 is a single-sheet manual priority slot, and an additional 250-sheet Tray 3 is optional for the 3390. Neither the single slot nor the feeder's 50 originals is added to ordinary printing capacity; the 3392's included extra tray and stapler are also excluded.
The original main-tray table explicitly lists Letter, Legal and A4, with ordinary paper at 60–105 g/m². The priority path has different media allowances. HP recommends that envelopes use the single-sheet feed and straight-through output path; its envelope guidance limits stock to 90 g/m² and excludes unsuitable windows, clasps and adhesives. Match the actual driver size and type.
Automatic print duplex is included and documented for compatible Windows and Mac drivers, with a 105 g/m² upper-weight warning. Its exact automatic-duplex size subset was not established in the material read here. It can meet a flexible-paper automatic-duplex requirement, but a specifically selected duplex paper size remains unconfirmed rather than borrowing the ordinary feed-size list.
Fax, toner and space need their own checks
The V.34 fax uses a real telephone connection and the proper regional fax cord. Configure the phone arrangement and fax settings; Ethernet or USB carries the computer interaction, not the telephone signal. No blanket VoIP compatibility is promised. These normal fax, copy and scan tasks coexist in the setup without claiming they can all occupy the same paper path simultaneously.
HP declares up to 22 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 21 A4, and recommends 1,000–3,000 printed pages monthly. Maximum duty is separately 10,000. Original 49A Q5949A and 49X Q5949X replacement yields are approximately 2,500 and 6,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752; remaining toner and current running cost are unknown.
Original and current specifications agree on approximately 19.5-inch width and 18.5-inch height but differ on depth and weight, leaving strict bounds for those fields unconfirmed. Allow scanner, feeder and service access. The 3390 is most suitable when wired monochrome output and ordinary capture matter more than unattended two-sided computer scanning.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original exact 3390 Q6500A column and German guide declare 22 Letter ppm, separately 21 A4. Maker rates, no measured or duplex-rate claim. Recommended 1,000–3,000 monthly printing is separate from exact current duty 10,000.
Paper handling
Main Tray 2 includes 250 ordinary sheets at 80 g/m². One-sheet priority slot is not an extra stack; optional 3390 Tray 3 is excluded. Letter/Legal/A4 main-tray 60–105 g/m² support is explicit. Automatic print duplex is included for actual compatible driver at up to 105 g/m², but its exact size subset is unconfirmed; only flexible-paper automatic duplex qualifies. Single-envelope manual feed and straight-through output recommended, up to 90 g/m² per original envelope guidance.
Scanning arrangement
Letter/A4 flatbed with 24-bit color, up to 1,200 ppi optical. Included 50-sheet feeder has confirmed Letter/Legal/A4 one-sided computer scan routes. Original TWAIN and WIA drivers explicitly do not support duplex scanning. Separate standalone 2-to-2 copy feature is documented; it is not a confirmed duplex computer-file route and physical reversing/single-pass method is not guessed. Global automatic-scan/single-pass fields remain unknown across contexts; buying plans provide only positively supported simplex computer-scan routes.
Computer and mobile connections
Standard USB computer and native 10/100 Ethernet support installed compatible print/scan software. Original connection matrix distinguishes direct/native network from USB queue sharing: remote users of a shared USB queue cannot scan/fax. Network panel scanning is off by default; configure scan-software targets. Direct USB Start Scan behavior is not borrowed. No included Wi-Fi/Direct route or established native AirPrint/Mopria. Fax additionally requires proper telephone line/cord, not Ethernet as the fax signal.
Supplies and declared yields
Original 49A Q5949A standard approximately 2,500 pages and 49X Q5949X high-yield approximately 6,000 under ISO/IEC 19752; actual use varies. Exact US box names Q5949A, no separate introductory-yield assumption. No remaining toner, current price or page cost claimed.
Software and support
Compatible actual full HP LaserJet Scan/TWAIN/WIA or historical Mac HP Director solution required; old OS list is not universal current support. Computer/required software must run for panel destinations. Email attaches via supported computer mail client, no independent SMTP guarantee. Readiris OCR is separately installed. License-related support links and system passwords do not establish included held-job PIN printing.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US Q6500A#ABA explicitly discontinued, 110–127 V 50/60-Hz low-voltage field plus original separate low/high-voltage edition table. No voltage-conversion/dual-voltage promise. Current 19.5×15.7×18.5 inches/39.1 lb versus original 495×445×470 mm/17.8 kg: width 19.5 and height 18.5 agree, depth/weight unknown. The 3392 extra tray, stapler and memory are not borrowed.
