Wired sharing with two separate lower paper trays

The HP LaserJet 4000TN suits an intentionally maintained wired workgroup that wants different ordinary paper stocks kept ready. The original configuration combines a JetDirect network server with two 250-sheet lower trays and a 100-sheet front input. Its main compromise is expansion: the supplied package has no automatic duplex assembly, and its original Ethernet connection is 10Base-T rather than a modern high-speed network interface.

HP's exact US product record identifies C4121A and explicitly marks the printer discontinued. This review covers its documented US low-voltage configuration. The actual electrical table specifies 100–127 volts at 50–60 Hz separately from a 220–240-volt regional version. Check the individual rating plate rather than treating either version as universal-voltage hardware.

The original TN network hardware is specific

HP lists 8 MB RAM and an included JetDirect server for this exact TN configuration. The manufacturer's original technical-data paragraph names Ethernet/802.3, 10Base-T through RJ-45, 10Base2 through BNC, and LocalTalk System 7 networks. These are period interfaces with real setup requirements, not evidence of Wi-Fi, gigabit Ethernet or included 100BaseTX.

The normal plan here uses the included wired Ethernet server, a compatible network and an actually suitable computer printer driver. Confirm the particular legacy card and network arrangement before relying on it. The optional-server ordering list also includes faster and different network cards; their presence in a brochure does not change what the original TN package contains.

Parallel and nine-pin RS-232 serial interfaces are also documented. They are not USB sockets, and no USB conversion arrangement is assumed. PCL 6, PCL 5e and PostScript Level 2 emulation are original printer languages, but historical system lists do not guarantee present operating-system compatibility. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held document release remain unconfirmed.

Separate stocks without inflating the included capacity

The included paper total is 600 ordinary sheets: 100 in Tray 1 and 250 in each of the two lower trays. It is not 1,100 simply because the TN has more visible paper sources. The additional 500-sheet feeder shown among accessories is optional and excluded.

The exact T/TN lower-tray table explicitly lists Letter, Legal and A4, which also fit the supported front-input range. These ordinary capacities use 20-lb/75-g/m² paper; heavier or thicker media can reduce the count. Separate lower trays can hold different supported sizes or stocks, provided the guides and software's source, size and type selections match the actual load.

For preprinted ordinary sheets, use face up and top short edge toward the printer in Tray 1. Lower-tray stock goes face down with its top toward the user. Checking that distinction before a letterhead job avoids assuming that every input loads the same way.

Supported envelopes use Tray 1 in batches of up to ten. Leave its extension unextended, open and extend the rear output bin, and load the print face up with the postage end toward the printer. Adjust guides and the actual envelope job settings. The separate 75-envelope power feeder is not included.

Network-ready does not mean duplex-equipped

HP's C4123A automatic duplex assembly is optional. This standard TN configuration therefore fails an automatic two-sided requirement even though it is network-ready and has multiple trays. If a particular used machine has an accessory fitted, verify that hardware and the compatible driver's configuration separately.

The 4000TN is monochrome print-only, with no document scanner, flatbed, feeder, copier or fax. HP declares up to 17 one-sided Letter pages per minute and separately 16 A4. Those are manufacturer ratings, not measured results here or a duplex-speed promise.

Supplies and physical checks complete the decision

HP's original technical data declares a 65,000-page maximum monthly duty. A recommended monthly range remains unconfirmed. Cartridge declarations are approximately 6,000 pages for C4127A and 10,000 for C4127X under the user guide's historical 5%-coverage, density-three, EconoMode-off conditions. Neither declaration guarantees current installed toner or establishes a live cost per page.

Original sources consistently give 15.4-inch width. Other body and weight presentations differ, including inconsistent height conversions, so strict remaining body limits are unconfirmed. Allow access for paper, rear output, cables and cartridge changes. Choose this TN for verified older wired sharing and separate stocks; included duplex, USB, wireless or scanning needs different documented hardware.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

HP explicitly rates the 4000 series at up to 17 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 16 A4. These are maker figures, not measurements or duplex speed. Original HP technical data 5966-4742EUC declares a 65,000-page maximum monthly duty. A recommended monthly range is unconfirmed; the maximum is not substituted for recommendation.

Paper handling

Exact 4000TN includes normal 100-sheet Tray 1 plus two 250-sheet lower trays, total 600 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets. Exact T/TN table explicitly supports Letter/Legal/A4 in each lower tray and front range supports those sizes. Ordinary front stock face up/top toward printer; lower stock face down/top toward user. Envelopes use Tray 1 up to ten, face up/postage end toward printer, front extension unextended, rear bin open and extended. Optional extra 500-sheet feeder, 75-envelope feeder and C4123A automatic duplex assembly excluded.

Scanning arrangement

Original monochrome print-only hardware has no document scanner, flatbed, feeder, copier or fax. JetSend device communication does not give this printer a physical document scanner.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact 4000TN technical-data paragraph positively identifies included JetDirect Ethernet/802.3 10Base-T RJ-45, 10Base2 BNC and LocalTalk System 7. Compatible wired network, correct cable and actual driver are required. Optional 100BaseTX cards do not establish the original included package; no gigabit, USB or Wi-Fi promise. Parallel and RS-232 are also documented, separate from USB.

Supplies and declared yields

Original ordering table identifies C4127A at approximately 6,000 and C4127X at approximately 10,000 pages. The user guide describes historical life on Letter/A4 at 5% coverage, density three and EconoMode disabled. These are maker declarations, not an ISO test established here or a remaining-toner guarantee. The historical original package claim does not establish the cartridge now fitted to a discontinued unit. No current price or cost per page.

Software and support

Original PCL 6, PCL 5e and PostScript Level 2 emulation depend on a correctly installed compatible driver. Period Windows, Macintosh and network lists do not guarantee a current operating system. C4123A automatic duplex assembly is an optional purchase, not included; optional hard-disk or control-panel features do not establish included PIN-held document release. AirPrint and Mopria remain unconfirmed.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US model identity plus original documented 100–127-V 50–60-Hz configuration, separate from the 220–240-V regional edition. Verify the individual rating plate; no universal-voltage or unverified option-code promise. Original guide and HP brochure agree on 15.4-inch width. Height labels contain inconsistent inch/cm conversions, and depth/weight presentations differ between original editions, so strict depth, height and weight remain unknown. Allow front loading, rear output, cables and cartridge access beyond closed body dimensions.
