Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can an earlier 4050N print A4 over included Ethernet with 600 ordinary sheets?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and an actually compatible network/driver. The N package includes 10/100Base-TX and a front 100 plus lower 500 supporting ordinary A4.
Explore this need in the finder →Do the network card and 16 MB RAM provide PIN-held document release?
Fails included PIN release. The actual four-digit Private Job feature requires a separate printer hard disk and configured compatible driver.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the N package automatically duplex Letter paper?
Fails included automatic duplex. HP lists the C4123A duplex assembly as an option, separately from the included JetDirect card.
Explore this need in the finder →A wired shared printer with one large lower tray
The HP LaserJet 4050N is the network-equipped choice for a maintained older workgroup that mostly uses one ordinary paper stock. The original N package includes a 10/100Base-TX JetDirect server, 16 MB RAM and a 500-sheet lower tray, plus the 100-sheet front input. Its deciding limitation is that network readiness does not include automatic duplex or the hard disk needed for PIN-held jobs.
HP's exact US support record identifies the 4050N, and the original manufacturer brochure crosswalks it to C4253A. This is an earlier model reference without a current-availability promise. The documented US low-voltage configuration uses 100–127 volts at 50–60 Hz; the original table separately lists a 220–240-volt edition. Confirm the actual machine's rating plate. A Canada language-option footnote is not treated as proof of a US retail suffix.
Use the included Ethernet server with compatible software
The exact N configuration explicitly includes JetDirect 10/100Base-TX. Use a suitable wired network and an actually compatible computer printer driver. This is a real included Ethernet arrangement, unlike the optional server on the base 4050. It is also different from the earlier 4000N's originally documented 10Base-T package.
The N package also includes HP's Fast InfraRed receiver. That period optical connection is not evidence of a Wi-Fi radio or Wi-Fi Direct. Parallel and nine-pin RS-232 serial interfaces are documented too, but neither is a USB host port. No converter is assumed in this review's included setup.
PCL 6, PCL 5e and PostScript Level 2 emulation are original printer languages. Historic Windows, Mac and network environment lists still require checking the actual computer and driver. They do not establish present-system support, AirPrint or Mopria. The normal matched arrangement here is compatible computer printing over included Ethernet.
600 sheets, arranged for a substantial main stack
The normal included inputs are a 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 and one 500-sheet lower tray. Both the exact base/N media table and the front input's supported range establish ordinary Letter, Legal and A4. The combined 600-sheet count uses ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² paper; thickness and conditions affect real loading.
This arrangement is useful when a large main stock should remain ready while front input supplies another suitable medium. For ordinary preprinted paper, load Tray 1 face up with its top short edge toward the printer. Load the lower tray face down with its top toward the user. Adjust the guides and match the software's source, size and type to the actual paper.
Supported envelopes use Tray 1 in batches of up to ten. Leave the front extension unextended for that routine, open and extend the rear output bin, and load the print face up with the postage end toward the printer. Set the actual envelope size and type. The optional 75-envelope feeder and extra 500-sheet feeder do not enlarge the included count.
Check the separate duplex and storage requirements
The C4123A automatic duplex assembly is optional. This original N package therefore fails an automatic two-sided requirement unless a separately verified accessory configuration is established. More RAM and an included network card do not turn paper automatically.
PIN-held release has another independent prerequisite. HP's job-retention section requires a printer hard disk and correctly configured driver. Its actual Private Job workflow takes a four-digit PIN from the driver and releases the document through the control panel. The original package's 16 MB RAM is not that optional disk, so included PIN release is recorded as unavailable.
The 4050N is a monochrome print-only printer with no document scanner, feeder, flatbed, copier or fax. Optional storage and communication hardware do not add those physical functions.
Read the historical ratings in context
HP rates the engine at up to 17 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 16 A4. The original HP 4050 comparison column declares a 65,000-page maximum monthly duty, not an established recommended monthly range. These manufacturer figures are not hands-on results.
C4127A and C4127X original declarations are approximately 6,000 and 10,000 pages under historical 5%-coverage, density-three, EconoMode-off conditions. No current toner remainder or live page cost is promised. Conflicting original body presentations leave strict dimensions and operating weight unconfirmed; allow loading, rear output, cables and cartridge access. Choose the 4050N for verified compatible wired monochrome sharing, with separate hardware decisions for duplex and confidential release.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact original 4050 series rating is up to 17 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 16 A4. These are HP figures, not measured performance or duplex speed. The HP 4050 comparison column declares 65,000-page maximum monthly duty, separate from competitors. A maker recommended monthly range remains unconfirmed.
Paper handling
Exact 4050N includes front 100 plus one 500-sheet lower tray, total 600 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets. Actual base/N lower-tray table explicitly lists Letter/Legal/A4 and front range supports each; 600 ordinary sheets supported by size. Ordinary front stock face up/top toward printer; lower stock face down/top toward user. Envelopes up to ten use front tray, face up/postage end toward printer, extension unextended and rear output open/extended. Optional extra 500-sheet feeder, 75-envelope feeder and C4123A automatic duplexer excluded.
Scanning arrangement
Actual original monochrome print-only hardware has no flatbed, document feeder, document scanner, copier or fax. Network management and optional storage do not add physical document capture.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact 4050N includes JetDirect 10/100Base-TX and 16 MB RAM, plus Fast InfraRed receiver. Normal plan uses compatible wired Ethernet network and actual computer driver. Infrared receiver is not Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct. Parallel/RS-232 are also documented, not USB. AirPrint/Mopria remain unconfirmed; no optional hard disk inferred from RAM or network card.
Supplies and declared yields
Actual original 4050 ordering table identifies C4127A at approximately 6,000 and C4127X at approximately 10,000 pages. Historical life is stated for Letter/A4 at 5% coverage, density three and EconoMode off. No ISO basis is substituted for that declaration, and original cartridge declarations do not promise current installed or remaining toner. No current supply price or cost per page.
Software and support
Original PCL 6, PCL 5e and PostScript Level 2 emulation require an actually compatible driver. Historical operating-system lists do not promise present-system support. The C4123A automatic duplex assembly is optional. Actual Private Job uses a four-digit PIN but requires optional printer hard disk and correctly configured driver; the included configuration does not satisfy PIN release. No AirPrint or Mopria route established.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US model identity and original low-voltage 100–127-V 50–60-Hz configuration are documented separately from the 220–240-V edition. Check the individual rating plate; no invented US retail option code. Original body figure and HP comparison brochure disagree on width/depth and include inconsistent height-unit conversions; strict dimensions remain unknown. Original guide weight explicitly excludes cartridge, whereas brochure figures are shipping weights; strict operating weight remains unknown. Allow tray access, rear output, cables and cartridge changes.
