The main tradeoff

No included USB, Wi-Fi, scanner, automatic duplex or PIN-job hard disk. The included infrared receiver is a different connection.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a maintained 4050TN provide 600 ordinary Legal sheets over its included wired network?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible Ethernet computer driver. The original 100-sheet front tray and two 250-sheet lower inputs positively support ordinary Legal sheets.

Separate paper stocks on an included wired network

The HP LaserJet 4050TN fits a deliberately maintained older workgroup that needs two ordinary paper stocks ready in separate lower trays. The original TN package combines 10/100Base-TX JetDirect networking, 16 MB RAM and two 250-sheet trays with a 100-sheet multipurpose input. Its deciding limitation is that the extra trays and network card do not include automatic duplex or the hard disk required for confidential PIN-held jobs.

HP's exact US support page identifies the 4050TN, while the original manufacturer brochure identifies C4254A. This review is an earlier-model reference without a current-stock promise. It concerns the documented low-voltage US configuration: 100–127 volts at 50–60 Hz, separately listed from the 220–240-volt edition. Check the actual rating plate. The brochure's Canada language-option footnote does not establish a US retail suffix.

Match the network arrangement to the real interfaces

The exact TN configuration explicitly includes a JetDirect 10/100Base-TX print server. The normal arrangement here uses that Ethernet server with a compatible wired network and an actually supported computer printer driver. It does not assume that period network software works unchanged on a present operating system.

An HP Fast InfraRed receiver is also included in the original package. It is a different optical connection, not Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct. The documented parallel and RS-232 serial interfaces are separate from USB; no USB host cable or converter arrangement is inferred.

PCL 6, PCL 5e and PostScript Level 2 emulation are documented printer languages, subject to the actual driver and host. No AirPrint or Mopria route is established here. A wired server and an infrared accessory are not enough evidence to promise a modern phone-printing workflow.

The benefit is three sources, not a larger total

The included ordinary capacity is 600 sheets: 100 in Tray 1 plus 250 in each lower tray. This arrangement divides the same aggregate count differently from the N model's single 500-sheet lower tray. An additional 500-sheet feeder shown in the accessory table is not included.

The exact T/TN lower-tray table explicitly supports Letter, Legal and A4 in each lower input; the supported front range accepts those ordinary sizes too. Counts use ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² paper. Different thicknesses or stocks can reduce capacity, and a mixed load needs the guides, source, size and type settings to match each actual tray.

For ordinary preprinted material, front Tray 1 takes the print face up and top short edge toward the printer. Lower trays take the print face down with the top toward the user. That difference matters when one tray holds stationery and another holds plain sheets.

Supported envelopes go through Tray 1 in batches of up to ten. Keep the front extension unextended for this routine, open and extend the rear output bin, and place the print face up with the postage end toward the printer. Adjust the guides and choose the actual envelope job settings. The 75-envelope power feeder remains an optional accessory.

Duplex and confidential release need separate hardware

The original C4123A automatic duplex assembly is optional. The included TN configuration therefore fails an automatic two-sided requirement. Multiple paper trays supply different stock; they do not themselves turn a page. Verify any separately offered accessory and its driver configuration on the individual machine.

HP's retention section separately requires a printer hard disk and correctly configured driver. Private Job then uses a four-digit PIN chosen in the driver and entered through the control panel. The original included RAM and JetDirect server are not that disk, so standard PIN release is recorded as unavailable.

The 4050TN is monochrome print-only. It has no document scanner, feeder, flatbed, copier or fax, regardless of optional storage or communication features.

Historical performance and supplies have clear limits

HP declares up to 17 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 16 A4, and a 65,000-page maximum monthly duty. These are manufacturer declarations, not measured results here. A recommended monthly range remains unconfirmed and is not replaced by maximum duty.

The original C4127A and C4127X declarations are approximately 6,000 and 10,000 pages under historical 5%-coverage, density-three, EconoMode-off conditions. No installed toner remainder or live cost per page is promised. Conflicting original body measurements leave strict dimensions and operating weight unconfirmed; allow front loading, rear output, cables and cartridge access. Choose the TN for compatible wired printing with separated stocks; required included duplex, PIN release, USB, wireless or scanning calls for different documented equipment.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact original 4050 series rating is up to 17 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 16 A4. These are HP figures, not measured performance or duplex speed. The HP 4050 comparison column declares 65,000-page maximum monthly duty, separate from competitors. A maker recommended monthly range remains unconfirmed.

Paper handling

Exact 4050TN includes a normal 100-sheet front tray plus two 250-sheet lower trays, total 600 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets. The exact T/TN paper table positively supports Letter, Legal and A4 in each lower tray, plus the front supported range, giving 600 ordinary sheets by size. Front ordinary stock goes face up with the top toward the printer; lower stock goes face down with the top toward the user. Match each source, guides, size and type. Up to ten envelopes use the front tray, face up with the postage end toward the printer, front extension unextended and rear output open and extended. The optional extra 500-sheet feeder, 75-envelope feeder and C4123A duplex assembly are excluded.

Scanning arrangement

Actual original monochrome print-only hardware has no flatbed, document feeder, document scanner, copier or fax. Network management and optional storage do not add physical document capture.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact 4050TN includes JetDirect 10/100Base-TX, 16 MB RAM and a Fast InfraRed receiver. The normal plan requires a compatible wired network and actual computer printer driver. Infrared is not Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct, parallel and RS-232 are not USB, and no converter is assumed. AirPrint and Mopria remain unconfirmed. The network card and RAM do not establish the optional PIN-job hard disk.

Supplies and declared yields

Actual original 4050 ordering table identifies C4127A at approximately 6,000 and C4127X at approximately 10,000 pages. Historical life is stated for Letter/A4 at 5% coverage, density three and EconoMode off. No ISO basis is substituted for that declaration, and original cartridge declarations do not promise current installed or remaining toner. No current supply price or cost per page.

Software and support

Original PCL 6, PCL 5e and PostScript Level 2 emulation require an actually compatible driver. Historical operating-system lists do not promise present-system support. The C4123A automatic duplex assembly is optional. Actual Private Job uses a four-digit PIN but requires optional printer hard disk and correctly configured driver; the included configuration does not satisfy PIN release. No AirPrint or Mopria route established.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US model identity and original low-voltage 100–127-V 50–60-Hz configuration are documented separately from the 220–240-V edition. Check the individual rating plate; no invented US retail option code. Original body figure and HP comparison brochure disagree on width/depth and include inconsistent height-unit conversions; strict dimensions remain unknown. Original guide weight explicitly excludes cartridge, whereas brochure figures are shipping weights; strict operating weight remains unknown. Allow tray access, rear output, cables and cartridge changes.
