4100DTNIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A wired monochrome queue needing automatic duplex and 1,100 included Letter, Legal or A4 plain-paper sheets.

The main tradeoff

The included duplexer makes it deeper and heavier; it has no scanner, standard USB or established built-in Wi-Fi.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can this earlier Ethernet monochrome printer automatically duplex Legal with 1,100 included sheets?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled. Exact DTN includes both cassettes and the duplexer; Legal is supported in those trays and the duplex path.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does the included DTN fit a closed-body depth limit of 21 inches?

Fails. The original installed-DTN diagram gives a 22.2-inch closed depth; the shallower TN figure excludes that included duplexer. Operating space would require still more room.

Can this network duplex printer perform single-pass scanning of a Letter original?

Fails. Duplex describes its output accessory; the print-only unit has no scanner or document feeder.

The HP LaserJet 4100DTN is an earlier monochrome printer for a wired office queue that needs both substantial included paper input and automatic two-sided output. Its standard equipment combines a Jetdirect 10/100Base-TX card, a duplexer and two 500-sheet cassettes beneath a 100-sheet multipurpose tray. The tradeoff is a larger, heavier print-only configuration with an older connection and software generation.

The exact US product number is C8052A#ABA, and HP marks it discontinued. This assessment covers that original DTN configuration rather than assuming accessories from a generic 4100 listing. It does not report a new hands-on performance or reliability test.

1,100 sheets and duplex are both included

The original model table lists both 500-sheet cassettes and the duplex accessory on DTN. That gives 1,100 sheets of standard input when the 100-sheet Tray 1 is included. The plain-paper capacity basis is 75g/m² stock, and the cassette table explicitly supports Letter, Legal and A4. Thickness and loading conditions still matter.

The duplexer also supports Letter, Legal and A4. Its documented media range is 60–105g/m², and the rear output must be closed for it to operate. Configure the driver to recognize the accessory and use the proper binding and paper orientation. Do not assume that every material accepted by Tray 1 can use the same two-sided route.

Envelope printing is a separate task: suitable envelopes in Tray 1, up to ten, with the guide’s material and loading instructions. Open the rear output for a straight path when appropriate. HP explicitly warns against printing both sides of an envelope, and the optional 75-envelope feeder is not standard DTN equipment.

A wired shared printer without a scanner

The included Jetdirect card supplies 10/100Base-TX Ethernet printing. Legacy parallel is also documented. USB is not a standard device connection in this original configuration, and no converter is presumed. Built-in Wi-Fi and a supported modern AirPrint or Mopria route are unestablished here.

The original software covers Windows 9x/NT4/2000 and historical Mac OS generations, with other older drivers. Confirm a suitable driver, functioning card and real network job from the actual computers. An old network-management tool or infrared accessory should not be mistaken for current mobile-printing support.

The DTN is monochrome print-only hardware. There is no scanner, automatic document feeder for originals, integrated copier or fax. Automatic print duplex does not imply automatic scan duplex, and the separately named 4100mfp needs its own assessment.

Separate throughput, storage and maintenance

HP declares 25 one-sided Letter pages per minute and 24 A4 pages per minute. These are original manufacturer ratings, not newly measured results or a two-sided sheets-per-minute claim. The extra paper supply reduces a particular reloading burden; it does not change that engine rate.

The job-retention chapter requires an installed hard-disk accessory and configured drivers before its private PIN jobs apply. A disk is absent from the standard DTN equipment list. Do not treat the duplexer, network card or included 32MB RAM as substitutes for that storage requirement.

A positive recommended monthly range is not assigned from the material read. The maintenance message’s 200,000-page interval concerns replacement of parts such as the fuser and rollers; it is not a monthly workload recommendation or a guarantee about an individual older machine’s remaining life.

Its installed accessories change the footprint

The original setup diagram gives a closed width of about 15.4 inches, depth of 22.2 inches and height of 18.3 inches. The included duplexer makes it deeper than the TN’s 19.9-inch configuration. Its 62-pound listed weight excludes toner and paper. Allow additional access for open trays, rear output and the top cover rather than fitting furniture to the closed body alone.

The guide names replacement C8061A at 6,000 pages and C8061X at 10,000. Those historical life figures assume five-percent text coverage, density three and EconoMode off; actual use varies. No current supply price, cost per page or remaining toner is inferred.

Verify the actual US 100–127V rating label, inspect configuration and supplies-status pages, and demonstrate a duplex network job from the intended computer. Choose the 4100DTN when this exact wired monochrome arrangement meets the work. A requirement for scanning or a modern wireless workflow points to a model with those functions explicitly documented.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original guide declares 25 one-sided Letter pages per minute and 24 A4 pages per minute. These are maker ratings, not a newly measured result or a duplex rate.

Paper handling

Included 100-sheet Tray 1 plus two 500-sheet cassettes total 1,100 sheets of 75 g/m² (20 lb) plain paper. Each included cassette supports Letter, Legal and A4. Additional trays and the 75-envelope feeder are optional; envelopes use Tray 1, up to ten.

Scanning arrangement

These exact 4100/4100N/4100TN/4100DTN configurations are monochrome print-only hardware. The separate 4100mfp series is not assessed through this printer manual.

Computer and mobile connections

The exact DTN includes 10/100Base-TX Ethernet, parallel, a duplexer and two 500-sheet cassettes. No standard USB, Wi-Fi or mobile protocol is inferred.

Supplies and declared yields

Replacement C8061A is declared at 6,000 pages and C8061X at 10,000. The original guide uses 5% text coverage, print density 3 and EconoMode off; actual life depends on toner use. Not an invented ISO yield, supplied-cartridge yield or current cost per page.

Software and support

The original software list covers Windows 9x/NT4/2000, older Windows drivers and Mac OS 7.5.3 or later within that historical edition. Confirm an exact current driver; old JetSend or infrared features are not AirPrint/Mopria support.

Electrical edition and setup

The reviewed US C8052A#ABA edition uses the guide’s 100–127 V, 50/60 Hz regional supply. Check the actual label. Closed configuration is 15.4 x 22.2 x 18.3 inches; 62 lb is without toner cartridge or paper. Allow space for open feed/output paths and service access.
