Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can this earlier Ethernet monochrome printer hold 600 A4 sheets and meet a 25 ppm one-sided Letter requirement?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled. The exact n includes Ethernet and two trays totaling 600 A4 plain-paper sheets; 25 ppm is the separate maker Letter rating.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the standard n automatically duplex Legal?
Fails. Legal is printable, but the automatic duplex accessory is optional on n.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it scan and copy a Letter original on the network?
Fails. This exact print-only 4100n has no scanner or copier; the separate 4100mfp is different hardware.
Explore this need in the finder →The HP LaserJet 4100n is an earlier monochrome printer for shared wired black-document printing. Its original standard configuration includes a Jetdirect 10/100Base-TX network card, 32MB memory and 600 sheets of plain-paper input. The main compromise is automatic two-sided output: the duplexer is an option on this n version, rather than included hardware.
The exact US HP page maps this printer to C8050A#ABA and marks it discontinued. A particular older machine needs inspection of its installed card, trays, supplies and software. This review interprets the original model description and instructions without claiming hands-on timing, reliability or ownership experience.
The included network route is Ethernet
The n model adds the Jetdirect card to the base hardware. That supplies the documented Ethernet route for a shared office queue. The legacy parallel interface is also present, but USB is not listed as a standard device connection. Do not assume that a cable advertised for another LaserJet will turn it into the same connection arrangement.
Optional infrared and expansion accessories in the guide are separate from standard network printing. Built-in Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint and Mopria are not established in this review. A wired interface and an old network utility do not by themselves prove a mobile-printing protocol.
Check the intended computers, driver and working network configuration before choosing an older example. The original software documentation covers Windows 9x/NT4/2000 and historical Mac OS systems, with some additional legacy drivers. It is not a universal statement about current operating systems.
One 500-sheet cassette and the multipurpose feed
The 600-sheet standard input is 100 sheets in Tray 1 plus 500 in Tray 2. The original plain-paper table supports Letter, Legal and A4 in the included paths, with capacity based on 75g/m² stock. Paper weight, thickness and conditions can affect a usable stack. Additional feeders are optional and should not be counted merely because the chassis can accept them.
The 4100n does not include the duplex accessory supplied with the 4100DTN. An individual upgraded n may have one, but the original name and a family-level duplex heading do not establish that upgrade. If automatic two-sided reports are essential, require the actual equipment and a demonstrated duplex job.
Tray 1 handles up to ten suitable envelopes, following the guide’s material, orientation and guide-adjustment instructions. Opening the rear output can help provide a straight path. The optional 75-envelope feeder is extra equipment, and envelopes must not be printed on both sides.
Print-only hardware and optional private-job storage
The printer has no scanner, ADF, integrated copier or fax. Do not substitute functions from the separate 4100mfp series just because the number is similar. Ethernet shares its printing function; it does not add scanning to a computer.
Private printing with a four-digit PIN appears in the guide’s job-retention chapter, which expressly requires an installed hard-disk accessory and a properly configured driver. No disk is included in the standard n model table. That condition is why an ordinary 4100n does not satisfy the finder’s included PIN-release requirement.
HP declares 25 one-sided Letter pages per minute and separately 24 A4 pages per minute. Neither number is a newly measured result or a duplex rate. A positive recommended monthly range is unestablished here. The guide’s 200,000-page maintenance interval is a service schedule, not a monthly recommendation.
Supplies and placement need real-unit checks
Replacement cartridges are C8061A and C8061X, declared at 6,000 and 10,000 pages respectively. The original explanation uses five-percent text coverage, density three and EconoMode off, with life depending on toner use. It does not establish a current cost per page or the contents of an older unit. Ask for its configuration and supplies-status pages.
The closed n body measures about 15.4 inches wide, 19.9 deep and 13.6 high; 39 pounds excludes cartridge and paper. Leave room for open trays, rear output and top-cover access. Verify the actual US 100–127V rating label and demonstrate printing from the intended Ethernet queue.
The 4100n suits an established wired monochrome routine when those checks succeed. A need for included automatic duplex, modern wireless printing or scanning should point to equipment that explicitly supports the complete requested setup.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original guide declares 25 one-sided Letter pages per minute and 24 A4 pages per minute. These are maker ratings, not a newly measured result or a duplex rate.
Paper handling
Included 100-sheet Tray 1 plus one 500-sheet cassette total 600 sheets of 75 g/m² (20 lb) plain paper. Each included cassette supports Letter, Legal and A4. Additional trays and the 75-envelope feeder are optional; envelopes use Tray 1, up to ten.
Scanning arrangement
These exact 4100/4100N/4100TN/4100DTN configurations are monochrome print-only hardware. The separate 4100mfp series is not assessed through this printer manual.
Computer and mobile connections
The exact n configuration includes a Jetdirect 10/100Base-TX card and legacy parallel. It has no standard USB device port; no Wi-Fi or modern mobile route is inferred.
Supplies and declared yields
Replacement C8061A is declared at 6,000 pages and C8061X at 10,000. The original guide uses 5% text coverage, print density 3 and EconoMode off; actual life depends on toner use. Not an invented ISO yield, supplied-cartridge yield or current cost per page.
Software and support
The original software list covers Windows 9x/NT4/2000, older Windows drivers and Mac OS 7.5.3 or later within that historical edition. Confirm an exact current driver; old JetSend or infrared features are not AirPrint/Mopria support.
Electrical edition and setup
The reviewed US C8050A#ABA edition uses the guide’s 100–127 V, 50/60 Hz regional supply. Check the actual label. Closed configuration is 15.4 x 19.9 x 13.6 inches; 39 lb is without toner cartridge or paper. Allow space for open feed/output paths and service access.
