4200Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

An existing legacy parallel computer with a compatible driver and cable, needing monochrome Letter, Legal or A4 printing and 600 included sheets.

The main tradeoff

Requires a legacy parallel computer/cable; no standard USB, Ethernet or automatic duplex. It cannot scan, and its recommended monthly workload remains unconfirmed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

With an existing parallel computer and compatible driver, can the base 4200 print Legal with 600 standard sheets and a four-digit private-job PIN?

Qualifies only with the connection left flexible and earlier references enabled. The labeled arrangement requires a real parallel computer/cable; both included trays support Legal, and the supporting driver provides temporary Private Job PIN release.

Does the base 4200 provide direct USB printing without an extra interface?

Fails. Its standard interface is parallel; an optional connectivity card or unspecified converter is not included.

Does the 600-sheet base configuration automatically duplex Letter?

Fails. The rear automatic duplexer is an optional accessory on the base 4200.

A legacy parallel printer for a specific computer

The base HP LaserJet 4200 is a substantial monochrome printer whose usefulness begins with its connection requirement. The reviewed US Q2425A#ABA is an earlier, discontinued model. Its standard computer interface is IEEE 1284 parallel. There is no standard USB connection, Ethernet card or wireless radio to assume from the family name. It fits an existing compatible parallel-connected workstation much more naturally than an unplanned modern laptop purchase.

That is a practical buying condition, not a minor cable detail. Confirm the computer port, supported driver and appropriate parallel cable before committing to a particular unit. The family accepts optional Jetdirect networking and a connectivity card, but an expansion slot is not an included adapter. This assessment does not turn an unverified USB converter or a separately purchased network card into a standard connection. If a named USB or network connection is essential, the base configuration does not meet it.

Useful paper capacity without automatic duplex

The included paper arrangement is a 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 and a 500-sheet Tray 2. Both support Letter, Legal and A4, so the documented normal input is 600 sheets for each of those sizes using the specified ordinary stock. This is already a useful capacity for forms or reports. The family's advertised 2,600-sheet maximum requires additional hardware and is not the capacity of a bare 4200.

Tray 1 also handles occasional envelopes, with a limit of ten rather than its hundred-sheet plain-paper figure. Select the correct size and media type, and use laser-compatible envelopes. The optional 75-envelope feeder is a different accessory. A seller's photograph of one family member with extra trays or finishing equipment should not determine what another unit includes.

Automatic duplex is optional on the base model. A two-sided setting in a generic driver cannot create the missing rear duplex accessory. HP's original guide also discourages simply refeeding printed sheets as a substitute, because the automatic duplex routine makes paper-handling adjustments. If unattended two-sided packets are central to the job, assess a configuration with a confirmed duplexer rather than planning around an improvised reload routine.

Speed and private printing have different meanings

HP lists up to 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute and separately 33 A4. These are manufacturer maximums, not results from a test of this particular machine. A fast engine can help finish a substantial report, but the output still needs collecting and its paper supply needs maintaining. The 150,000-page monthly duty cycle is a maximum reference figure; a recommended monthly workload range was not established in the material read and is left unknown.

The original guide does document a four-digit Private Job PIN entered in a supporting driver and released at the printer panel. It is possible to distinguish that temporary held job from permanent storage: private jobs are deleted after release or power-off, while the Stored Job feature requires an optional hard disk. Check that the actual driver offers the intended private-printing control. A watermark saying confidential is not equivalent to holding the pages until someone arrives.

Check condition, access and the electrical edition

The original cartridge is HP Q1338A, with a historical declaration of roughly 12,000 pages at five-percent text coverage, density three and EconoMode off. That is a particular older measurement basis, not an ISO yield or a promise about remaining toner in a used printer. Review a supplies-status page and inspect actual output before treating a cartridge's name as evidence of its remaining life.

The closed body is approximately 16.2 inches wide, 17.3 deep and 14.4 high. HP lists 45 pounds without the print cartridge, and the access drawings require considerably more room with the cover and trays open. Choose a sturdy location with working clearance. The reviewed US package must be the 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz version; the family also has a separate 220–240-volt edition, so check the label under the top cover. The 4200 remains a focused print-only tool when its legacy parallel setup is already part of the plan.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original maker maximum 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 33 A4. Not a measured result or a duplex rate.

Paper handling

Included 100-sheet Tray 1 plus 500-sheet Tray 2; both support Letter/Legal/A4 at stated 75 g/m² capacities, total 600. Automatic duplexer, additional input, 75-envelope feeder and stacker are optional and excluded. Tray 1 accepts up to 10 envelopes.

Scanning arrangement

Print-only monochrome hardware views have no scanner, feeder, copier or fax; printing multiple copies of a computer document is not copying paper originals.

Computer and mobile connections

Base 4200 standard IEEE 1284 parallel only. No USB or network interface is included; optional Jetdirect and connectivity cards are excluded. A flexible connection can represent this explicitly labeled legacy parallel arrangement only.

Supplies and declared yields

HP Q1338A cartridge is declared about 12,000 pages for 4200-series text at 5% coverage, toner density 3 and EconoMode off. This historical basis is not an ISO/IEC 19752 declaration. Remaining toner, present supply price and cost per page are not established.

Software and support

Use a currently compatible driver exposing the actual installed options. Private Job supports a four-digit panel-release PIN using RAM; it is deleted after release or power-off. Permanent Stored Job requires an optional hard disk, which is not included here. AirPrint and Mopria are not established by the read material.

Electrical edition and setup

Reviewed HP US Q2425A#ABA and original 110-volt regional column: 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz. Confirm physical rating label. Closed 412 × 439 × 366 mm dimensions rounded to 16.2 × 17.3 × 14.4 in; 45 lb without cartridge. Allow top/tray/rear access.
