HP LaserJet 4200dtn: 1,100-sheet Ethernet monochrome duplex review

The package that includes both capacity and duplex

The HP LaserJet 4200dtn is the earlier 4200 package for a wired monochrome office that wants substantial paper capacity and automatic two-sided output together. The exact US Q2428A#ABA is marked discontinued by HP. Its original configuration includes Jetdirect Ethernet, a 100-sheet multipurpose tray, two 500-sheet trays and the rear duplex accessory. Those inclusions make the dtn materially different from both the smaller n model and the tn package without a duplexer.

It is still strictly a document printer. No scanner glass or automatic document feeder is present, and it does not independently copy or fax paper originals. A job-storage menu can produce additional copies of a computer file, but that is different from placing a printed original on a copier. Consider it where black-and-white output is the task and the office already has another way to capture incoming documents.

Automatic two-sided printing needs the correct setup

The included duplexer supports Letter, Legal and A4, along with several other listed sizes. A compatible driver must recognize that the attachment is installed, and the job needs the appropriate two-sided and binding settings. Keep the rear output bin closed: the original guide explicitly says opening it disables the automatic duplexer. This is an operational condition worth checking before diagnosing a two-sided job as a driver fault.

Use suitable paper within the duplex path's limits. The guide's operating instructions exclude envelopes, labels, transparencies, custom sizes and paper heavier than 105 g/m² from duplex work. Its appendix has a broader weight table, so the more restrictive 105 g/m² instruction is retained for the practical routine. The fact that a thick sheet can pass through Tray 1 does not mean it should travel through the automatic two-sided path.

All three included trays support Letter, Legal and A4 at the published normal-paper capacities, producing 1,100 standard sheets for those formats. The optional expansion maximum of 2,600 is not credited. Tray 1 can also feed up to ten envelopes in a separate single-sided routine. The 75-envelope feeder and stapler/stacker advertised elsewhere in the family are optional accessories, rather than features implied by this model's dtn name.

A wired shared printer with temporary PIN release

The included Jetdirect 10/100Base-TX card supplies Ethernet networking, and the printer also has its legacy parallel interface. Standard USB, built-in Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct are not part of the original package. AirPrint and Mopria were not established in the primary material read. A network cable is therefore a positive shared-computer printing option, but not a promise of every modern mobile printing method.

A supporting driver can send a Private Job with a four-digit PIN for release at the printer panel. The original manual distinguishes this temporary routine from the separate Stored Job feature. Private jobs are deleted after release or power-off; permanent storage requires an optional hard disk. Check the driver interface if confidential output matters, because merely changing a web-administration password does not hold a document in the print queue.

Assess the actual unit before depending on it

HP's speed claim is up to 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 33 A4. These figures do not describe duplex throughput and are not measurements of a used unit. The 150,000-page monthly duty cycle is a maximum reference. A recommended monthly workload range was not established, so it cannot be used to qualify a selected sustained-volume requirement.

The 4200dtn is deeper and heavier than a basic 4200 because of its included accessories. Closed dimensions are approximately 16.2 inches wide,20.5 deep and 19.2 high. The guide lists 66 pounds without the print cartridge. Leave room for feeder access, the top cover and rear service access, and verify that the surface can support the actual assembled machine.

The appropriate Q1338A cartridge carries an older declaration of about 12,000 pages at five-percent text coverage, density three and EconoMode off. That is not a statement of remaining toner or a current cost per page. Inspect sample output, both 500-sheet feeders and a real automatic two-sided job, along with configuration and supplies-status pages. Confirm a current compatible driver and the reviewed US 110–127-volt,50/60-Hz rating label rather than the separate 220-volt edition. A complete working unit has a clear role when included Legal-capable duplex and multiple paper sources are the priorities.
