Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a wired office use the 4200n for Legal printing with 600 standard sheets and temporary PIN job release?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled, included Jetdirect Ethernet and a compatible driver exposing Private Job. Legal appears in both standard tray tables.
Explore this need in the finder →Does its n suffix include automatic Letter duplex?
Fails. The n model adds networking; automatic duplex remains optional in its exact configuration row.
Explore this need in the finder →Can a phone require AirPrint merely because this printer has Ethernet?
Fails the selected AirPrint requirement because that protocol is not established in the read original material. Ethernet printing itself remains supported.
Explore this need in the finder →The network version keeps a straightforward paper setup
The HP LaserJet 4200n is the earlier 4200 configuration to consider when a small office needs shared black-and-white printing over a wired network and already has a suitable place for a heavy workgroup printer. The exact US Q2426A#ABA is marked discontinued by HP. Its standard Jetdirect 10/100Base-TX card provides a real Ethernet connection; this is a material change from the parallel-only base model, rather than a software sharing feature.
The printer also retains the parallel port. USB and built-in Wi-Fi are not included in the documented package. A phone being connected to the office router does not by itself establish that this older printer supports the phone's preferred printing protocol. AirPrint and Mopria were not established in the primary material read, so they should remain requirements to check separately rather than benefits inferred from Ethernet.
Six hundred sheets are included; two-sided hardware is not
The 4200n contains a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 500-sheet main tray. The original paper tables list Letter, Legal and A4 in both, at the stated plain-paper capacities. This supplies 600 standard sheets for those formats. It can reduce interruptions during ordinary document runs, but it is not the same arrangement as a tn model with another included 500-sheet feeder.
Automatic duplex requires an optional rear accessory. The n suffix gives the printer networking, not an automatic two-sided path. Check the actual back of a second-hand unit if a seller says it has been expanded, and configure the driver to recognize only hardware that is physically present. This review assesses the original standard 4200n, so a selected automatic-duplex requirement is not satisfied by the possibility of buying an attachment.
Occasional envelopes can use Tray 1, up to ten at a time, with the correct paper settings and suitable laser-compatible construction. The separate 75-envelope feeder is not part of the ordinary tray count. Heavier media and envelopes also have their own limits; a 600-sheet total should not be applied to every material that can pass through the printer.
Shared printing benefits from deliberate job handling
For supported drivers, the original guide offers a four-digit Private Job PIN. Someone can submit a private document and release it from the control panel when present, instead of leaving it immediately in a shared output bin. Use the actual Private Job driver control; an administrator password protecting the web configuration is a different purpose.
The temporary private job is deleted after printing or when power is switched off. Permanent Stored Job operation depends on an optional hard disk. This distinction is useful when reviewing an older printer offered without a complete accessory inventory: a missing optional disk does not automatically remove the documented temporary PIN routine, while a claim of long-term form storage needs its own installed hardware.
The rated print speed is up to 35 pages per minute on Letter, separately 33 on A4, for one-sided output. These are maker claims, not a measurement of a refurbished unit. HP's 150,000-page monthly duty figure is not a recommended monthly volume; the recommended range remains unknown in this assessment. Do not size a sustained workload from duty cycle alone.
What to inspect before putting it back to work
Ask for a configuration page showing the printer identity and working Jetdirect network configuration, plus a supplies-status page and sample output. Check that a current driver exists for the computer environment and that the wired network can reach the printer. The original CD-era operating-system list should not be treated as a guarantee for a present system.
HP specifies the Q1338A cartridge at roughly 12,000 pages under an older five-percent text-coverage basis with density three and EconoMode off. That is neither an ISO yield nor proof that an included cartridge has much toner left. Paper pickup, output condition and service history remain separate checks on the actual machine.
The closed housing is approximately 16.2 by 17.3 by 14.4 inches, and the guide lists 45 pounds without its cartridge. Allow space to open the top cover and extend trays, not just fit the cabinet. For the reviewed US package, confirm the 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz rating label rather than importing the family's 220-volt version. A complete, working 4200n is most convincing as a wired monochrome document printer whose owner accepts the absence of standard automatic duplex and scanning.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original maker maximum 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 33 A4. Not a measured result or a duplex rate.
Paper handling
Standard 100-sheet Tray 1 plus 500-sheet Tray 2, each with Letter/Legal/A4 at 75 g/m²; total 600. Additional 500/1,500-sheet input and automatic duplexer are optional. Tray 1 envelopes up to 10; separate 75-envelope feeder excluded.
Scanning arrangement
Print-only monochrome hardware views have no scanner, feeder, copier or fax; printing multiple copies of a computer document is not copying paper originals.
Computer and mobile connections
4200n includes Jetdirect 10/100Base-TX Ethernet and IEEE 1284 parallel. No standard USB or built-in Wi-Fi; AirPrint/Mopria are unconfirmed rather than inferred from Ethernet.
Supplies and declared yields
HP Q1338A cartridge is declared about 12,000 pages for 4200-series text at 5% coverage, toner density 3 and EconoMode off. This historical basis is not an ISO/IEC 19752 declaration. Remaining toner, present supply price and cost per page are not established.
Software and support
Use a currently compatible driver exposing the actual installed options. Private Job supports a four-digit panel-release PIN using RAM; it is deleted after release or power-off. Permanent Stored Job requires an optional hard disk, which is not included here. AirPrint and Mopria are not established by the read material.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US Q2426A#ABA; reviewed 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz edition, not 220–240 V variant. Closed 412 × 439 × 366 mm rounded 16.2 × 17.3 × 14.4 in; 45 lb without cartridge. Verify installed card, working driver and operating clearance.
