Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the 4200tn provide 1,100 included Legal sheets over Ethernet without purchasing another paper feeder?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled. The exact tn row includes the 100-sheet tray and two 500-sheet trays, each positively supporting Legal in the original media tables.
Explore this need in the finder →Can that same standard tn configuration automatically duplex A4?
Fails. Its extra paper feeder is included, but the automatic duplexer is optional; dtn is a different package.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the 150,000-page duty cycle qualify a 5,000-page recommended monthly workload requirement?
Fails because a recommended monthly maximum was not established. The duty-cycle maximum is not substituted for the recommendation.

The HP LaserJet 4200tn is built around a practical office convenience: two full-size 500-sheet trays plus a 100-sheet multipurpose tray are included. The reviewed US Q2427A#ABA is an earlier printer that HP explicitly marks discontinued. It is a monochrome print-only workgroup machine, best considered for an existing wired environment where the extra paper sources solve a real daily problem.
For example, an office can keep ordinary paper in one cassette and another supported stock in the second, while reserving Tray 1 for short jobs. Configure the correct media size and type rather than expecting an application to know what was physically loaded. The added tray improves paper availability; it does not increase engine speed, add scanning or create an automatic two-sided path.
The tn package has a precise boundary
The standard input total is 1,100 sheets. The original tray tables support Letter, Legal and A4 in the multipurpose and 500-sheet trays, so that capacity applies to each of these plain-paper formats at the documented stock weight. The family's 2,600-sheet maximum is an expanded configuration and is excluded here. Verify that both included 500-sheet feeder assemblies are actually present when evaluating a second-hand offer.
The important suffix distinction is duplex. A 4200tn does not include the rear automatic duplexer; the 4200dtn does. That difference cannot be solved by selecting a two-sided option in a driver that assumes an attachment exists. HP also discourages treating manually refed printed sheets as an equivalent routine because its automatic path makes adjustments for two-sided work. For an office producing regular two-sided packets, the additional input capacity alone is not sufficient.
Envelope support is useful but separate. Tray 1 can hold up to ten suitable envelopes using the documented media settings. The advertised 75-envelope feeder is optional hardware, not another standard tray. Ordinary-paper input capacity should not be used to estimate envelope or specialty-stock capacity.
Wired networking and a genuine private-job routine
Standard Jetdirect 10/100Base-TX Ethernet lets compatible computers share the printer over a wired network. A parallel interface is also present for a compatible legacy computer. USB, infrastructure Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct are not standard connections. AirPrint and Mopria support were not established by the primary material read, so the Ethernet connection is not used to promise either mobile protocol.
For confidential office output, a supported driver can submit a Private Job with a four-digit PIN. The user then releases it at the printer panel. This is temporary RAM-based job handling: the private job is deleted after release or power-off. Permanent Stored Job functionality needs the optional hard disk. Inspect the actual driver controls and installed accessories rather than treating every storage-related menu as the same feature.
HP's one-sided speed claim is up to 35 Letter pages per minute, separately 33 A4. A table headed with the A4 number does not establish a slower Letter engine, and neither figure is a duplex rate. The 150,000-page monthly duty cycle is a maximum reference; a recommended monthly range was not established and is left unknown. Match routine workload using a documented recommendation when it is essential.
A larger configuration deserves a condition check
The extra feeder increases the cabinet's height and weight. Closed dimensions are approximately 16.2 inches wide, 17.3 deep and 19.2 high. The user guide lists 60 pounds without the print cartridge. Top-cover and tray access need substantially more space, so reserve a sturdy location where paper changes do not require moving the whole printer.
The 4200-series Q1338A cartridge is declared around 12,000 pages at five-percent text coverage, density three and EconoMode off. This is an older coverage-based estimate, not an ISO yield or evidence of the remaining toner in an offered machine. Check the supplies and configuration pages, sample output, feeder pickup and maintenance history. Additional paper capacity is useful only if both feeding mechanisms work reliably on the actual unit.
Confirm a current compatible driver and a working network card before putting it into an office routine. For the reviewed US package, inspect the 110–127-volt,50/60-Hz label; the original guide also describes a separate 220–240-volt edition. A complete 4200tn can be a sensible earlier reference for wired, one-sided monochrome work where keeping two stocks loaded matters more than automatic duplex or multifunction features.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original maker maximum 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 33 A4. Not a measured result or a duplex rate.
Paper handling
Included 100-sheet Tray 1 and two 500-sheet trays, total 1,100 at 75 g/m² for Letter/Legal/A4, each expressly supported in all included trays. Automatic duplexer is optional on tn. Extra expansion to 2,600 and 75-envelope feeder excluded; Tray 1 envelope limit 10.
Scanning arrangement
Print-only monochrome hardware views have no scanner, feeder, copier or fax; printing multiple copies of a computer document is not copying paper originals.
Computer and mobile connections
4200tn standard Jetdirect 10/100Base-TX Ethernet plus IEEE 1284 parallel. No included USB/Wi-Fi/Wi-Fi Direct. Mobile AirPrint/Mopria not established.
Supplies and declared yields
HP Q1338A cartridge is declared about 12,000 pages for 4200-series text at 5% coverage, toner density 3 and EconoMode off. This historical basis is not an ISO/IEC 19752 declaration. Remaining toner, present supply price and cost per page are not established.
Software and support
Use a currently compatible driver exposing the actual installed options. Private Job supports a four-digit panel-release PIN using RAM; it is deleted after release or power-off. Permanent Stored Job requires an optional hard disk, which is not included here. AirPrint and Mopria are not established by the read material.
Electrical edition and setup
US Q2427A#ABA identity and discontinued notice personally read. Review 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz edition and check label; not universal voltage. Closed 412 × 439 × 488 mm rounded 16.2 × 17.3 × 19.2 in, 60 lb without cartridge. Allow access above and around trays.
