A 600-sheet base printer for a prepared USB computer

The HP LaserJet 4250 base model fits an actually compatible computer producing ordinary monochrome documents from an included 600-sheet paper supply. It provides Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and parallel connections. Its deciding restrictions are physical: the embedded Ethernet server and automatic duplexer found in other packages are optional upgrades here.

HP's exact US page identifies Q5400A#ABA and marks the printer discontinued. This review covers its documented low-voltage edition as an earlier reference. The original comparison table separates the base configuration from n, tn and dtn packages, so their network interface, additional tray and duplex mechanism do not become standard by sharing a manual.

Check the driver and cable on the actual computer

Use the correct USB computer cable and a genuinely compatible printer driver. The period Windows direct procedure installs software before attaching the selected cable, warns against simultaneous USB and parallel connections and specifically excludes Windows NT 4.0 from USB. Historic operating-system lists do not guarantee a working installation today.

PCL and PostScript language support likewise does not establish current compatibility. The original direct-PDF provision requires at least 128 MB of printer memory, above the base model's documented 48 MB. Optional extra memory is not included merely because the machine supports expansion.

The Jetlink accessory connection serves paper-handling devices, not a computer network. Optional JetDirect Ethernet, wireless and Bluetooth provisions remain separate hardware. Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint and Mopria are unconfirmed, and no USB converter or network server is assumed.

Two ordinary inputs make the normal paper capacity

The front Tray 1 holds 100 ordinary sheets and the lower Tray 2 holds 500, giving 600 at the manufacturer's 20-lb/75-g/m² basis. Both explicitly support Letter, Legal and A4. Optional additional inputs and the 3,100-sheet expanded maximum are excluded.

For standard paper, adjust the lower side and rear guides and set its knob to Standard for the named size. Keep all four corners flat below the height indicators and do not fan the stack. In the front input, extend the support for ordinary sheets, center them beneath the tabs and bring the guides against the stack without bending it.

Ordinary one-sided letterhead loads face up with its top toward the printer in Tray 1, or face down with its top toward the user in the lower tray. Alternative Letterhead mode changes the orientation when the matching media type is selected. Match the job's source, type and size to the actual loaded paper.

Allow time for manual two-sided batches

The base package needs driver-assisted manual duplex. In the documented Windows routine, enable manual duplex in the compatible driver and select Print on Both Sides (Manually). After first sides print, remove blank paper from Tray 1 and reload the printed stack there blank side up, top edge first. Press Select if the panel requests it.

All second sides feed from Tray 1, so larger jobs need repeated batches. The original manual says its period Mac OS X setup does not support manual duplex, while Mac OS 9 needs a separate plug-in. The shared two-sided option is therefore neither an automatic mechanism nor a universal operating-system promise.

Up to ten supported envelopes use Tray 1 face up with the postage end toward the printer. Normally leave its extension in for envelopes; oversize ones may need it. Open the rear output for the straight path, keep envelopes below the guide limits and select their real size. The optional 75-envelope feeder is excluded.

Keep temporary private printing separate from a hard disk

The guide documents Private Job with a four-digit driver PIN and panel Retrieve Job release. The normal temporary arrangement uses RAM-disk AUTO with enough available memory; the original control becomes available without a hard disk when at least 8 MB is free. Complex jobs may need additional memory, so this is not an unlimited held-job promise.

Temporary private jobs disappear at power-off and normally delete after release. Duplicate default names can replace a prior job. Permanent Stored Job storage requires an optional hard disk, which is excluded. This documented PIN routine does not establish encrypted transport or a permanent archive.

Use the workload recommendation and actual body basis

HP's exact model support record recommends 3,000–15,000 pages per month. That is separate from the original 200,000-page maximum duty. The declared one-sided speed is up to 45 Letter pages per minute, separately 43 A4; none is a test here. This print-only hardware has no scanner, copier or fax.

The closed body is 16.5 inches wide, 17.8 deep and 14.8 high, with guide weight 44.5 pounds without the cartridge. Allow loading and access beyond the body and inspect the actual 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz plate. Original replacement yields do not establish installed toner remainder, condition, stock or a current printing cost.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact 4250 scope declares up to 45 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 43 A4, not measured or duplex speed. Exact base support record recommends 3,000–15,000 pages per month. Original maximum monthly duty is 200,000 pages and is not substituted for that recommendation.

Paper handling

Exact base 4250 includes front 100 plus lower 500 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² Letter/Legal/A4 sheets, total 600. Extra trays, 3,100-sheet maximum and automatic duplexer are optional. Set lower guides and Standard knob for named size, keep paper flat below limits and do not fan. Manual duplex is documented Windows driver Print on Both Sides (Manually), then second sides in Tray 1 only, blank side up/top first, Select if prompted; larger jobs need repeated batches. Period Mac OS X manual duplex unsupported. Up to ten supported envelopes use front face up/postage end first, normally front extension in, rear output open; optional 75-envelope feeder excluded.

Scanning arrangement

Actual original hardware is a monochrome print-only printer without a scanner, flatbed, automatic document feeder, copy function or fax. A reference to scanning a page into a RAM disk concerns printer job processing, not document-capture hardware. Printer-management e-mail alerts and third-party forms software add no scanner or fax modem.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact base 4250 includes Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284B parallel computer interfaces; embedded Ethernet is optional. Use correct cable and an actually compatible driver. Original Windows software precedes direct cable, NT 4.0 USB excluded and simultaneous USB/parallel prohibited. Jetlink serves optional paper handling, not Ethernet. Wireless/Bluetooth/Gigabit servers are separate upgrades; AirPrint/Mopria/Wi-Fi Direct remain unconfirmed.

Supplies and declared yields

Original ordering identifies Q5942A and Q5942X replacement cartridges. The 2004 guide declares approximately 10,000 and 20,000 pages at historical 5% text coverage; the later US original declares the same counts with ISO/IEC 19752. These source bases stay distinct. An apparent C5942A typo in the brochure overview is not used as a cartridge identity. No installed remainder, current supplied full yield, price or cost per page is inferred.

Software and support

Use an actually compatible PCL/PostScript computer driver. Original Private Job assigns a four-digit PIN in the driver and releases it through panel Retrieve Job/user/job/Print/PIN. Normal temporary held printing uses enabled RAM disk with enough free memory; original RAM DISK default AUTO is available without a hard disk when at least 8 MB is free. Complex jobs may need more memory. Power-off deletes temporary private jobs and jobs normally delete after release; duplicate default names can replace a prior job. Permanent Stored Job needs an optional hard disk and is excluded. Original direct PDF 1.3 requires at least 128 MB, above the documented standard packages; no current driver, encryption or permanent archive promise.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US Q5400A#ABA identity and original 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz edition, separate from 220–240 V. Inspect actual plate and do not convert operating voltage. Closed base body is 16.5 W × 17.8 D × 14.8 H inches; guide weight 44.5 lb explicitly without cartridge, brochure rounds to 45 lb. Allow open inputs, output, cables and cartridge access beyond body; optional trays/duplexer and carton sizes excluded. Original open-tray depth has an inconsistent metric/inch pair, so no exact opening-clearance value is promised.
