A useful fit for

A prepared compatible wired computer network needing automatic Letter, Legal or A4 duplex from 1,100 ordinary sheets.

The main tradeoff

The duplexer increases rear depth. Temporary PIN jobs need driver/RAM-disk conditions, and no scanner, Wi-Fi or permanent storage is included.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible Ethernet computer automatically duplex Legal documents with 1,100 sheets for 15,000 monthly pages and temporary PIN release?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled. The dtn includes the actual duplexer and three ordinary inputs; close rear output and use compatible driver controls. Temporary Private Job additionally needs RAM-disk AUTO and enough free memory.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does maximum duty establish a recommended 20,000-page monthly workload?

Fails that workload requirement. The exact recommended monthly maximum is 15,000; maximum duty is a separate 200,000-page rating.

A supplied duplexer and three paper inputs

The HP LaserJet 4250dtn fits a prepared wired office needing 1,100 ordinary sheets and automatic two-sided monochrome documents. Its exact package includes the duplex mechanism, third input tray and embedded Ethernet server. The deciding limits are its earlier driver environment and the extra rear depth occupied by the duplexer.

HP's exact US product page identifies Q5403A#ABA and marks the printer discontinued. The actual original dtn column independently confirms the included tray and duplexer. This assessment covers the documented low-voltage US configuration without assuming present stock, condition or software compatibility. The separate dtnsl finishing accessory is excluded.

Use the included inputs for ordinary Letter, Legal or A4

The normal inputs hold 100 sheets in Tray 1 and 500 each in the two lower trays, giving 1,100 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets. The ordinary-size tables positively establish Letter, Legal and A4 across these inputs. The figure assumes the relevant trays all hold the selected size, rather than 1,100 sheets of each size simultaneously.

Adjust lower width and rear guides and set the size knob to Standard for a named standard size. Keep paper flat at all four corners and below the height indicators; do not fan it. Extend the front support for ordinary sheets, center the stack under the tabs and adjust guides without bending it. Match source, type and size in the compatible job.

The 3,100-sheet expanded maximum requires optional inputs and is excluded. A stacker or stapler handles output rather than adding input sheets. This dtn also excludes the optional 75-envelope feeder and permanent-storage hard disk.

Configure the real automatic duplex route

The included duplexer supports ordinary Letter, Legal and A4. Its table lists paper up to 120 g/m², but the actual operating instructions explicitly warn against duplexing above 105 g/m². This review therefore uses the narrower 60–105-g/m² operating range and retains the difference in the evidence.

Make sure the compatible driver recognizes the installed duplexer, close the rear output and select Print on Both Sides with the intended binding. The rear bin being open disables automatic duplex. Do not pull partly exiting paper while the printer reverses it to complete the other side.

For automatic letterhead, load the front side down and bottom edge first in Tray 1, or front side up with the top toward the back in the lower inputs. One-sided loading differs. Labels, transparencies, envelopes, vellum and unsupported custom media must not be sent through a two-sided routine.

Supported envelopes use up to ten face up in Tray 1 with postage end toward the printer. Normally leave its extension in unless an oversize envelope needs it. Open the rear output for the straight path and select the real envelope settings. This separate one-sided operation is compatible with ordinary office use, but not with the rear-closed duplex job.

Check the wired computer and driver installation

The included embedded JetDirect server is 10/100Base-TX Ethernet, alongside Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284B parallel. For the original network installation, print a configuration page and locate the IP address on its second page before setting up the compatible computer driver.

The period Windows direct procedure installs software before the selected cable, excludes Windows NT 4.0 from USB and prohibits USB and parallel simultaneously. The exact support record calls for a separately purchased USB cable. Historic language and operating-system lists do not promise support for a present computer.

Wireless, Gigabit and Bluetooth servers remain optional; AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct are unconfirmed. Original memory rows differ within the guide, while the later dtn brochure identifies 80 MB. Both are below the original 128-MB direct-PDF requirement, so that shortcut is excluded without assuming an upgrade.

Keep temporary PIN jobs separate from permanent storage

A compatible driver can mark a document Private Job and assign a four-digit PIN. At the panel, open Retrieve Job, choose the user and job, select Print and enter the PIN. The temporary arrangement uses RAM-disk AUTO with enough free memory; the original no-hard-disk control requires at least 8 MB available, and complex jobs may need more memory.

Temporary jobs disappear at power-off and normally delete after release. Distinct job names avoid replacing a prior default-named job. Permanent Stored Job requires an optional hard disk and is excluded. Neither the PIN nor an optional-security list establishes encrypted transmission or unlimited storage.

Fit the actual deeper body and documented workload

HP's exact dtn record recommends 3,000–15,000 pages monthly, separate from the 200,000-page maximum duty. Declared one-sided speed is up to 45 Letter pages per minute, separately 43 A4; no result was measured here. This is print-only hardware without scanning, copying or fax.

The closed body is 16.5 inches wide, 21 deep and 19.6 high, with guide weight 65.5 pounds without the cartridge. Allow opening and cartridge access beyond that body, check the actual 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz plate and inspect installed supplies. Replacement yields do not reveal remaining toner or a current printing cost.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact 4250dtn scope declares up to 45 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 43 A4, not measured or duplex speed. Exact dtn support recommends 3,000–15,000 monthly pages, separate from original 200,000 maximum duty.

Paper handling

Exact dtn includes front 100 plus two lower 500 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² inputs, total 1,100 Letter/Legal/A4 sheets when relevant trays contain that size. Set lower guides/Standard knob, stack flat below limits and do not fan. Included automatic duplex supports Letter/Legal/A4. Table says 60–120 g/m² but actual operation warns against over 105; review uses narrower 60–105 g/m². Compatible driver must recognize duplexer; rear output closed, Print on Both Sides and intended binding. Automatic letterhead uses front side down/bottom first in Tray 1 or lower front side up/top toward back. Up to ten envelopes use front face up/postage first, extension normally in, rear output open; never duplex envelopes. Optional 3,100-sheet inputs, stapler and 75-envelope feeder excluded.

Scanning arrangement

Actual original hardware is a monochrome print-only printer without a scanner, flatbed, automatic document feeder, copy function or fax. A reference to scanning a page into a RAM disk concerns printer job processing, not document-capture hardware. Printer-management e-mail alerts and third-party forms software add no scanner or fax modem.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact 4250dtn includes embedded JetDirect 10/100Base-TX Ethernet, Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284B parallel. Use compatible computer driver and actual configuration-page IP address for network setup. Original direct Windows software precedes selected cable, NT 4.0 USB excluded and USB/parallel not simultaneous. Exact support says USB cable separately purchased. Jetlink is paper-handling accessory connection; wireless/Gigabit/Bluetooth upgrades excluded. AirPrint/Mopria/Wi-Fi Direct unconfirmed.

Supplies and declared yields

Original ordering identifies Q5942A and Q5942X replacement cartridges. The 2004 guide declares approximately 10,000 and 20,000 pages at historical 5% text coverage; the later US original declares the same counts with ISO/IEC 19752. These source bases stay distinct. An apparent C5942A typo in the brochure overview is not used as a cartridge identity. No installed remainder, current supplied full yield, price or cost per page is inferred.

Software and support

Use an actually compatible PCL/PostScript computer driver. Original Private Job assigns a four-digit PIN in the driver and releases it through panel Retrieve Job/user/job/Print/PIN. Normal temporary held printing uses enabled RAM disk with enough free memory; original RAM DISK default AUTO is available without a hard disk when at least 8 MB is free. Complex jobs may need more memory. Power-off deletes temporary private jobs and jobs normally delete after release; duplicate default names can replace a prior job. Permanent Stored Job needs an optional hard disk and is excluded. Original direct PDF 1.3 requires at least 128 MB, above the documented standard packages; no current driver, encryption or permanent archive promise.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US Q5403A#ABA identity and original 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz edition, separate from 220–240 V; inspect plate and do not convert voltage. Closed dtn body with third tray and duplexer is 16.5 W × 21 D × 19.6 H inches, 65.5 lb without cartridge. Shallower tn and dtnsl finishing bodies excluded. Allow open paper/output/cables/cartridge access beyond closed body; inconsistent open-depth metric/inch pair not promised. Guide dtn memory differs at 64 versus 80 MB; later actual US dtn column says 80 MB, below 128-MB direct-PDF prerequisite.
