Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a compatible Ethernet computer use 600 ordinary Legal sheets for 15,000 monthly pages with temporary PIN-held printing?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled. The n includes the actual Ethernet server and recommended maximum of 15,000 monthly pages; Private Job needs compatible driver controls, RAM-disk AUTO and enough free memory.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the n include the extra tray for 1,100 ordinary sheets?
Fails an included 1,100-sheet requirement. Its normal front 100 plus lower 500 arrangement gives 600; the third tray is optional.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it automatically duplex Letter paper in the standard n configuration?
Fails included automatic duplex. The actual n needs attended manual reloading unless the optional mechanism is added.
Explore this need in the finder →Wired sharing with the standard 600-sheet inputs
The HP LaserJet 4250n fits a prepared computer network that needs monochrome documents and an included 600-sheet ordinary-paper supply. The n package adds embedded Ethernet to the direct computer interfaces. It does not add the tn's third tray or the dtn's automatic duplexer, so those remain separate decisions.
HP's exact US page identifies Q5401A#ABA and marks the printer discontinued. The original US comparison independently lists the n's 64 MB memory, 100-sheet front input and 500-sheet lower input. This assessment covers the documented low-voltage earlier edition without promising stock, condition or software support for a present computer.
Install the actual network driver and check the address
The included JetDirect server is wired 10/100Base-TX Ethernet. In the original installation, print a configuration page and locate the printer's IP address on its second page before setting up the computer. A compatible printer driver and suitable network are required; neither a socket nor an old operating-system list makes that compatibility automatic.
Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284B parallel are also included. The period Windows direct procedure installs software before connecting the selected cable, warns against simultaneous USB and parallel connections and excludes Windows NT 4.0 from USB. A separately purchased correct cable is part of preparing the real installation.
Optional wireless, Bluetooth and Gigabit servers remain upgrades. The Jetlink port serves paper-handling devices, not ordinary Ethernet. AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct are unconfirmed. Historic PCL and PostScript support likewise needs working software; original direct PDF requires at least 128 MB, above the included 64 MB.
Load each input for its actual paper size
The front 100 and lower 500 inputs give 600 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets. Both positively support Letter, Legal and A4. The expanded 3,100-sheet maximum requires optional hardware and does not describe this n package. An output stacker also does not increase input capacity.
Set the lower width and rear guides to the actual size and turn its knob to Standard for a supported named size. Keep the stack flat at all four corners below the height indicators and do not fan it. Extend the front support for ordinary sheets, center them beneath the tabs and adjust guides without bending the stack. Match size, type and source in the job.
For ordinary one-sided letterhead, use front face up/top toward printer or lower face down/top toward user. Alternative Letterhead mode changes that orientation when the matching media type is selected. Optional stapling accessories can also change image orientation and are excluded from this normal arrangement.
Two-sided jobs need attended front-tray batches
The automatic duplexer is optional for the 4250n. Its normal Windows manual routine enables manual duplex in a compatible driver and selects Print on Both Sides (Manually). After first sides finish, remove blank paper from Tray 1 and insert the printed stack there blank side up, top edge first. Press Select when the panel requests it.
All second sides feed through Tray 1, so long jobs require repeated batches. The original period Mac OS X arrangement does not support manual duplex; Mac OS 9 requires the described plug-in. Manual reloading is therefore neither automatic turning nor a universal software promise. An essential automatic-duplex need requires a separately documented included mechanism.
Supported envelopes use up to ten in Tray 1, face up with postage end toward the printer. Normally keep its extension in, although oversize envelopes may need it. Open the rear output for the straight path and choose the actual envelope settings. The optional 75-envelope feeder is excluded, and envelopes must not be printed on both sides.
Use a temporary private job with enough free memory
The original guide documents Private Job with a four-digit PIN assigned in a compatible computer driver. At the panel, select Retrieve Job, the user and job, then Print, and enter the PIN. The normal temporary arrangement uses RAM-disk AUTO with enough memory; without a hard disk, the original control requires at least 8 MB free. Complex jobs may need more memory.
Power-off deletes temporary private jobs, and jobs normally delete after release. Distinct names avoid replacing a prior job with the same default name. Permanent Stored Job needs an optional hard disk and is excluded. This routine does not establish encrypted network traffic or unlimited job storage.
Separate the monthly recommendation from maximum duty
HP's exact n support record recommends 3,000–15,000 pages monthly, separately from 200,000 maximum duty. The manufacturer declares up to 45 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 43 A4. These are not measured speeds here. This print-only machine has no scanner, flatbed, document feeder, copier or fax.
The closed body measures 16.5 inches wide, 17.8 deep and 14.8 high. The guide gives 44.5 pounds without the cartridge, with the later brochure rounding to 45. Allow access beyond the closed body, check the actual 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz plate and inspect installed supplies. Replacement yields do not reveal remaining toner or current cost per page.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact 4250n scope declares up to 45 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 43 A4, not measured or duplex speed. Actual exact n support record recommends 3,000–15,000 monthly pages, distinct from original 200,000 maximum duty.
Paper handling
Exact n includes front 100 plus lower 500 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² Letter/Legal/A4 sheets, total 600. Extra tray/3,100 maximum and automatic duplexer optional. Set lower width/rear guides and Standard knob to actual size; keep flat below limits, do not fan. Windows manual duplex uses compatible driver Print on Both Sides (Manually), then Tray 1 blank side up/top first and Select if prompted; repeated second-side batches, period Mac OS X manual duplex unsupported. Up to ten envelopes use front face up/postage end first, normally extension in, rear output open; optional 75-envelope feeder excluded.
Scanning arrangement
Actual original hardware is a monochrome print-only printer without a scanner, flatbed, automatic document feeder, copy function or fax. A reference to scanning a page into a RAM disk concerns printer job processing, not document-capture hardware. Printer-management e-mail alerts and third-party forms software add no scanner or fax modem.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact 4250n includes embedded JetDirect 10/100Base-TX Ethernet, Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284B parallel. Use actual compatible computer driver and configuration-page IP address for network setup. Direct Windows software precedes selected cable; NT 4.0 USB excluded and simultaneous USB/parallel prohibited. Exact support record says USB cable separately purchased. Jetlink serves optional paper handling. Wireless/Gigabit/Bluetooth options excluded; AirPrint/Mopria/Wi-Fi Direct unconfirmed.
Supplies and declared yields
Original ordering identifies Q5942A and Q5942X replacement cartridges. The 2004 guide declares approximately 10,000 and 20,000 pages at historical 5% text coverage; the later US original declares the same counts with ISO/IEC 19752. These source bases stay distinct. An apparent C5942A typo in the brochure overview is not used as a cartridge identity. No installed remainder, current supplied full yield, price or cost per page is inferred.
Software and support
Use an actually compatible PCL/PostScript computer driver. Original Private Job assigns a four-digit PIN in the driver and releases it through panel Retrieve Job/user/job/Print/PIN. Normal temporary held printing uses enabled RAM disk with enough free memory; original RAM DISK default AUTO is available without a hard disk when at least 8 MB is free. Complex jobs may need more memory. Power-off deletes temporary private jobs and jobs normally delete after release; duplicate default names can replace a prior job. Permanent Stored Job needs an optional hard disk and is excluded. Original direct PDF 1.3 requires at least 128 MB, above the documented standard packages; no current driver, encryption or permanent archive promise.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US Q5401A#ABA identity plus original 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz edition; separate 220–240-V hardware, inspect the actual plate and do not convert voltage. Closed n body is 16.5 W × 17.8 D × 14.8 H inches. Guide weight is 44.5 lb without the cartridge, versus the brochure rounded 45 lb. Allow paper, rear output, cables and cartridge access beyond the body. Optional trays/duplexer and carton are excluded; the inconsistent open-depth metric/inch pair is not promised as exact clearance.
