Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the original 5M configuration print Legal pages over Ethernet using 100 included sheets?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled, its included working configured J2552A network card and compatible computer print software. The documented 100-sheet Legal feed is Tray 1; optional universal trays are not assumed.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the 350-sheet general input total mean 350 included Legal sheets on a standard 5M?
Fails the selected paper-capacity essential. Legal is documented in 100-sheet Tray 1; Legal Tray 2 needs an optional universal replacement and the actual tray variant has not been established.
Explore this need in the finder →Does 5M have a built-in USB connection for a present computer?
Fails the selected connection. Original interfaces are included Jetdirect Ethernet and legacy parallel/serial arrangements; an unspecified converter is not built-in USB.

The HP LaserJet 5M is a monochrome print-only laser, identified as C3917A by HP's exact US product page and original 5/5M manual. The US page marks it discontinued. It is distinct from the Color LaserJet 5m, whose product number is C3962A. This review covers the documented 100/127-volt, 50/60-Hz configuration; the manual separately lists a 220/240-volt version.
The original manual gives 5M six megabytes of memory, an included Adobe PostScript Level 2 language module and a Jetdirect card supporting Ethernet and LocalTalk. These are meaningful differences from the base LaserJet 5. They do not turn this old printer into a scanner, copier or fax machine.
Included networking still needs a working legacy installation
HP's accessory table marks J2552A as shipping with the 5M. Its listed interfaces include Ethernet 10Base-T, BNC and the LocalTalk connector. The 10Base-T connection is the documented wired Ethernet route. Confirm the actual card is present and working, its settings can be obtained and the intended network and computer can send a usable print job.
The manual also provides the inherited IEEE-1284 parallel and RS-232 serial computer interfaces. A direct parallel setup needs a suitable computer port, cable and compatible print software. An unspecified USB conversion cable is not counted as a built-in USB port or guaranteed working printing route.
Old LocalTalk and infrared arrangements should not be confused with Wi-Fi. The infrared arrangement requires the optional HP adapter and a compatible portable device. Native AirPrint, Mopria and secure document PIN release were not established. A panel lock or control-panel password is not a held document that waits for its owner's print-release PIN.
Legal paper uses the multipurpose tray in the standard setup
The two included inputs are a 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 and a 250-sheet Tray 2, rated with 75 g/m² ordinary paper. Their combined general input rating is 350 sheets. The actual replacement-tray table distinguishes Letter-only, A4-only and optional universal Tray 2 variants, so verify the tray installed in a particular machine before treating that entire total as available for one selected size.
Letter, Legal and A4 are positively supported through Tray 1. The original standard-paper table places Legal in Tray 1; Legal use in Tray 2 requires the optional universal tray. The separately purchased 500-sheet Tray 3 also accepts Legal. Neither accessory is counted as included.
For a selected paper size, this review conservatively guarantees only the documented 100-sheet Tray 1 route until the actual Tray 2 variant is established. That distinction matters when a workflow requires a large Legal stack: being able to print a Legal page does not establish 350 sheets of included Legal capacity.
The automatic duplex unit is another option, C3920A. The standard 5M reviewed here therefore does not qualify for automatic two-sided printing. A manual, driver-controlled page routine or a used listing with additional accessories must not be silently substituted for the included configuration.
Tray 1 can print up to ten supported envelopes. Load them in the instructed orientation, print-side up and postage end inward, adjust the guide and choose the correct size. HP prohibits envelope duplexing and unsuitable clasps, windows, coated linings or self-stick adhesives. The separate 75-envelope feeder is optional.
Assess the actual printer and its remaining support
The manual describes a twelve-page-per-minute engine without identifying Letter or A4 in that statement. No size-specific rate is inferred here. A recommended monthly workload or maximum monthly duty figure was not established in the original material read, so neither is invented from its paper capacity or age.
HP identifies replacement toner 92298A. Its manual describes average text yield of 6,800 pages at 5% coverage and print-density setting 3. That historical condition is not an ISO yield or a statement about toner remaining in an installed cartridge. Examine the actual cartridge, maintenance state and printed pages.
The body is about 16.4 inches wide, 15.9 deep and 11.7 high, with a stated 37-pound weight excluding toner. Optional lower trays and duplex hardware change its dimensions. Allow additional access and ventilation space. Request the self-test page because it lists memory, installed personalities, paper options and page count. A functioning 5M can support an existing legacy monochrome queue, but its paper configuration, network card and current compatible print path need direct verification.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original manual describes twelve-ppm engine without assigning Letter/A4 in that statement. No size-specific rate or monthly recommendation/duty invented.
Paper handling
Included 100-sheet Tray 1 plus 250-sheet Tray 2 at 75 g/m². Original table gives Letter/A4 standard Tray 2 support but the accessory table separately distinguishes Letter-only, A4-only and universal variants; the actual installed variant is unestablished. General capacity is 350, while each selected size is guaranteed 100 through Tray 1. Legal requires optional universal Tray 2 for more than Tray 1 capacity; optional 500-sheet Tray 3 is excluded. C3920A automatic duplex unit and 75-envelope feeder are optional.
Scanning arrangement
Monochrome print-only hardware; no scanner, ADF, paper-original copier or fax. Generic toner-landing prose claiming scan/copy/ADF conflicts original product identity and is not used.
Computer and mobile connections
5M includes J2552A Jetdirect Ethernet 10Base-T/LocalTalk card as exact original starred footnote. Working actual card, network configuration and compatible print software required. Parallel/RS-232 legacy interfaces also documented; no built-in USB/Wi-Fi/Direct. Optional IR adapter is not Wi-Fi or native modern mobile printing.
Supplies and declared yields
Original guide replacement 92298A. Average 6,800 text pages at 5% coverage and density setting 3, not an ISO declaration or remaining-cartridge yield. Current costs and installed supply condition are unknown.
Software and support
5M includes Adobe PostScript Level 2 module and 6 MB memory. Actual compatible print driver/language is needed; old OS/protocol lists are historical. Control-panel password or lock is not documented secure PIN-held job release. AirPrint and Mopria are unknown.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US HP product C3917A 5m is discontinued, independently crosswalked to original guide C3917A/5M. Do not confuse Color 5m C3962A. Reviewed documented 100/127 V, 50/60 Hz configuration, separate from 220/240 V, 50 Hz. Closed body 16.4 W × 15.9 D × 11.7 H in, 37 lb without toner. Optional trays/duplex alter dimensions; extra access space is required.
