Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
With earlier models enabled and the connection left flexible, can a verified legacy parallel 6P print monochrome A4 pages with 350 ordinary sheets?
Qualifies only in the explicitly labeled actual legacy host, correct parallel cable and supported PCL driver setup. USB, IP networking and an optional converter are not included.
Explore this need in the finder →Can a standard 6P use its small C-type port as USB-C printing?
Fails USB. That connector is a legacy parallel form and requires its corresponding cable and host; its name is not evidence of USB hardware.
Explore this need in the finder →Can 6P automatically duplex Legal pages without an operator handling the stack?
Fails automatic duplex. The guide documents user refeeding for the second side; Legal input support and a manual two-sided procedure do not establish an automatic path.

The HP LaserJet 6P is a monochrome print-only laser whose usefulness depends on an actual compatible older computer setup. HP's exact US page identifies C3980A and marks it discontinued. The original manual separately confirms that model mapping. This review selects the documented 100/120-volt, 50/60-Hz electrical configuration; the separately tabulated 220/240-volt edition should not be treated as the same power supply.
The standard 6P includes 2 MB of memory, expandable to 50 MB using three memory SIMM slots. Its documented print language is PCL 6, with built-in fonts and graphics support. Included Adobe PostScript Level 2 belongs to the 6MP configuration, not the standard 6P. A printer carrying a later optional language or memory upgrade should be checked individually instead of having that equipment assumed.
The guide specifies true 600-by-600-dpi text and graphics and up to eight pages per minute. The read source does not identify a Letter-specific basis for that rate, so Letter ppm remains unknown in matching. Recommended monthly volume and maximum duty cycle are also unconfirmed. These gaps should not be filled with figures from another LaserJet.
Parallel connectors and infrared are not modern USB or Wi-Fi
The original interface list includes large B-type and small C-type parallel ports, LocalTalk and an IrDA infrared port. The B and C names refer to legacy parallel connector forms. They do not mean USB-B or USB-C. A usable parallel arrangement needs the correct IEEE-1284 cable, the corresponding computer interface and a driver that generates a language the printer accepts.
No printer cables are included in the documented package. The guide distinguishes a standard-length parallel cable from the smaller connector route for a longer cable. Check actual connector shapes and host support before acquiring a cable. This review does not invent a USB converter or treat an optional external Jetdirect print server as included Ethernet.
The physical LocalTalk port appears in the shared interface description, but the manual's actual Macintosh software installation names the 6MP, whose PostScript hardware is included. This review therefore does not promise a standard 6P PostScript Macintosh setup solely because the socket exists. Its supported plans retain verified parallel printing and the documented compatible IrDA arrangement.
IrDA requires an infrared-capable host, its infrared driver and a suitable printer driver. The host must face the printer within about one meter and fifteen degrees to either side. This is a short-range optical link. It is not infrastructure Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint or Mopria, and it cannot satisfy one of those selected connection requirements.
Paper capacity is useful, but duplex means reloading
Included Tray 1 holds 100 ordinary sheets and Tray 2 holds 250, based on 75 g/m² stock, for 350 sheets total. Letter, Legal and A4 are confirmed in both feeds. Tray 2 is for paper at 60–105 g/m²; the multipurpose Tray 1 accepts a broader 60–163 g/m² range and serves special media.
The original two-sided instructions require printing the first sides and refeeding the pages. Tray 1 takes the already printed face down with the top toward the printer for the second pass. Tray 2 uses a different orientation. Follow the exact guide and application controls, and try a short numbered sample before running a long document.
HP explicitly warns of more possible jams, misfeeds or multi-feeds on the second pass, and potentially different print quality. A manual feed with pause can help with one-sheet handling. Neither the paper capacity nor the presence of two trays adds automatic duplex hardware.
Special media, toner and space deserve practical checks
Envelopes use Tray 1, up to ten, placed print side up with the postage end entering first. Open the rear output for the straighter path. The guide also uses that path for labels and heavier paper, while recommending the top output for transparencies and larger ordinary print jobs. Match the media and application settings rather than assuming one loading arrangement suits everything.
The original supplies list identifies C3903A or C3903F replacement toner. Its average 4,400-page declaration uses text at five-percent coverage, density three and EconoMode off. It is not an ISO/IEC 19752 figure or the remaining life of a used cartridge. Current availability and cost have not been established.
The body measures approximately 15.75 inches wide, 17.52 deep and 7.87 high and weighs 24.5 pounds with toner. Allow room to open the top, load paper and extend the rear output. There is no scanner, copier, fax or confirmed held-job PIN routine. The 6P fits maintained legacy PCL printing when the computer, cable and manual paper handling are already acceptable; modern native connections require a different verified configuration.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original guide declares up to 8 ppm without a paper-size basis in the read scope. Letter-specific matching rate therefore unknown; no A4/Letter conversion or measured test. Recommended monthly range and maximum duty not established in actual source scope.
Paper handling
Included 100-sheet Tray 1 plus 250-sheet Tray 2 at 75 g/m² gives 350 ordinary sheets. Letter, Legal and A4 positively supported in both feeds; Tray 2 paper only at 60–105 g/m², Tray 1 60–163 g/m². Two-sided work requires manual refeeding; no automatic duplex. Up to ten envelopes in Tray 1, print side up/postage end first, rear straight-through output open. Rear output also for labels/heavy stock; no automatic envelope duplex.
Scanning arrangement
Exact 6P/6MP are monochrome print-only lasers, no scanner, copier, fax, document feeder or flatbed. Printer infrared LED does not change laser imaging engine or add scan hardware.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact US 6P standard PCL 6/2 MB configuration: actual compatible legacy parallel host and IEEE-1284 cable or compatible IrDA host/driver required. No native USB/Ethernet/Wi-Fi. Physical LocalTalk socket does not establish the 6MP PostScript Macintosh software routine in an unchanged 6P.
Supplies and declared yields
Original accessory table lists replacement C3903A or C3903F. Original maintenance section declares average 4,400 text pages at 5% coverage, density 3 and EconoMode off; this is a historical measurement basis, not ISO/IEC 19752 or remaining used-cartridge life. Current supply availability and price not established.
Software and support
Needs the actual supported legacy computer interface, compatible print language and driver. No USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, native AirPrint or Mopria route is included. External Jetdirect EX print servers are optional accessories, excluded. No invented converter or modern operating-system support. Held-job PIN release not established.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US maker product identity paired with original electrical table supports reviewed 100/120 V ±10%, 50/60 Hz configuration. Separate 220/240 V column is a different edition, not a selectable dual-voltage setting. Body 15.75 W×17.52 D×7.87 H inches, 24.5 lb including toner; allow access for trays, top cover and rear output. Actual unit label and condition need checking.
