LaserJet 9040dn Q7699AIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A verified departmental desktop-driver routine for black-text documents through A3/Tabloid, within the recommended monthly workload.

The main tradeoff

Large and heavy, with no scanner; computer USB, wireless and high-capacity finishing are optional rather than standard.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible Ethernet desktop routine automatically duplex Tabloid and provide PIN release with 1100 standard paper positions at 25000 monthly pages?

Yes. Exact dn hardware and the actual operating tables support Tabloid in all three standard sources and its duplexer. RAM Private Jobs provide four-digit PIN release with a compatible driver, and 25000 pages fits the recommended monthly maximum.

Is direct computer USB included in the standard Q7699A package?

No. The actual guide describes USB through an optional connectivity card. The standard matching plan uses the included Ethernet interface.

Can the 9040dn scan or copy like the separately named 9040 multifunction machine?

No. The exact Q7699A dn is print-only; a related model name does not supply scanner hardware.

A wide-format departmental printer with included duplex

The HP LaserJet 9040dn is an earlier monochrome print-only machine for a wired office that needs substantial paper capacity and larger documents. The exact Q7699A package includes the embedded JetDirect network interface, automatic duplexer, a multipurpose tray and two ordinary cassettes. That combination suits established black-text workflows better than an office seeking compact multifunction equipment.

HP's U.S. product reference marks it discontinued. Evaluate an offered unit as older hardware with a particular service history and installed configuration. This source-based assessment does not claim present inventory, a renewed warranty or measured reliability.

The dn configuration matters

The original installation guide distinguishes base 9040, network 9040n and duplex network 9040dn. The base model starts with two 500-sheet trays. The n adds the 100-sheet multipurpose source, embedded Ethernet and additional memory; dn adds the automatic two-sided unit.

A family drawing can label the multipurpose tray or duplexer optional because they are optional on another version. The exact dn package description confirms they are included here. Conversely, a large finisher, 2000-sheet Tray 4, optional hard disk or wireless card does not become standard merely by appearing alongside the printer.

The dn remains print-only. A separately named 9040 multifunction printer or later M9040 is different equipment. Similar numbering should not supply this machine with a scanner, copier or fax.

All three standard sources handle the named wide sizes

The actual operating tables name Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and 11 × 17-inch paper in the multipurpose source and both 500-sheet trays. The standard total is therefore 1100 ordinary sheets for those supported sizes, subject to the stated paper and stack conditions. This is useful when larger reports form a routine part of the queue.

Configure the tray's actual size and type, align the guides and keep the stack below its indicators. The guide describes detectable sizes and the Custom/Standard switch, rather than assuming the printer can infer every sheet correctly. Software settings may override panel defaults, so match the job's requested media as well.

Envelopes are a separate routine. Use Tray 1, its smaller ten-envelope limit and the designated face-up output, with only one side printed. The normal paper capacities and duplex settings do not apply to an envelope stack.

Duplex and private jobs have actual operating instructions

The duplex accessory's paper table expressly supports Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and Tabloid. The driver must recognize the installed unit, and the job needs the correct two-sided, orientation and binding settings. HP excludes envelopes, labels, transparencies and media outside the duplex weight range.

For confidential output, the guide describes creating a Private Job with a user name, job name and four-digit PIN. The printer holds it until the operator retrieves the job and enters that PIN at the panel. This function uses available RAM when no optional hard disk is installed.

That distinction is useful: ordinary private release does not require assuming a disk in every unit. RAM capacity and job size still matter, and temporary jobs disappear when the printer powers off. Broader retention and heavier use can justify the separately installed disk.

Ethernet is the standard modern-computer route to verify

The included connection is embedded 10/100 Ethernet, with a documented parallel interface as well. USB and wireless appear as optional EIO connectivity cards. A USB cable alone therefore does not establish the supplied configuration's computer connection, and an old network-management feature does not establish native mobile printing.

The original Windows, Mac and network setup lists are historical. Confirm a suitable present driver and office network configuration before relying on the old installation disc. Native AirPrint and Mopria are not positively established in the read exact sources.

Workload and installation need realistic planning

HP's exact introduction declares up to 40 pages per minute on Letter and A4. The product-specific monthly recommendation is 15000–30000 printed pages, distinct from a 300000-page maximum duty rating. Cartridge declarations also have dated measurement conditions; neither is a promise of remaining toner.

The dn weighs 168 lb without its cartridge in the installation guide, which recommends four people for moving. Provide suitable support, delivery access and maintenance clearance, and check the actual regional electrical label before installation.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The exact 9040 introduction declares up to 40 ppm Letter and A4, separate from the neighboring 9050 rate and from duplex throughput. Product-specific recommendation is 15000–30000 printed pages monthly; 300000 is maximum duty. An older family guide uses a lower 10000 starting point but the same maximum.

Paper handling

Exact Q7699A dn includes 100-sheet Tray 1 and two 500-sheet trays: 1100 ordinary sheets. Actual operating tables name Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and Tabloid in both standard cassettes and the multipurpose source, with automatic duplex for all five. Tray 4 and large finishers remain optional. Envelopes use only Tray 1, up to ten, one-sided to the designated output bin.

Scanning arrangement

The exact 9040dn is print-only. Separately named 9040 MFP/M9040 equipment and third-party expansion solutions do not provide this standard printer with scanning, copying or fax.

Computer and mobile connections

Included embedded JetDirect 10/100 Ethernet and documented parallel connection. USB, serial/LocalTalk and wireless appear as optional EIO connectivity cards, not included computer USB or Wi-Fi. Standard matching therefore uses Ethernet and compatible desktop drivers.

Supplies and declared yields

C8543X is the exact maximum-capacity black cartridge. The 2005 user guide declares about 30000 pages at approximately 5% coverage, while the 2006 newsletter labels the same declared quantity under ISO/IEC 19752. The different dated bases are preserved, not treated as measured yield or remaining toner.

Software and support

Actual operating instructions allow Private Job with a four-digit PIN using available printer RAM without an optional hard disk. The job is released at the panel and temporary jobs are lost at power-off. Optional disk supports broader retention/large-job use. Native AirPrint/Mopria are not positively established; EWS management is not a mobile print route.

Electrical edition and setup

The exact dn installation guide gives 76.2 kg/168 lb without its print cartridge and recommends four people for moving. That is not a loaded mass. Closed-body dimensions are not taken from mixed-clearance diagrams. Check the actual regional electrical label; a 220–240 V foreign specification is not U.S. voltage evidence.
