Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a wired computer print ordinary Legal with 600 sheets and temporary PIN release for 12,000 monthly pages?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible computer driver. The standard M601n has 600 ordinary sheets, and Personal Job/PIN uses device memory with the documented deletion and space conditions.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the n automatically duplex Letter without adding hardware?
Fails automatic duplex. The exact n needs manual front-tray reloading; the mechanism is included with the different dn configuration.
Explore this need in the finder →Can an AirPrint client use the printer while it stays on Ethernet if no size or duplex requirement is imposed?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled, compatible firmware and the client on the same reachable local network through its access point. This separate route does not promise the computer-driver PIN or paper settings.
Explore this need in the finder →A wired office printer with a manual-duplex boundary
The HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 M601n suits a prepared commercial office needing monochrome Letter, Legal or A4 printing with 600 ordinary sheets and temporary PIN release through a compatible computer driver. Its included Gigabit Ethernet and USB computer connection provide useful choices. The main limitation is manual duplex: the n lacks the automatic accessory included with M601dn.
HP's exact US page identifies CE989A#BGJ and marks it discontinued. This earlier review covers its documented low-voltage configuration, without promising stock, used-unit condition or current driver support. HP specifies a commercial Class A environment, which matters when planning the installation.
Make the two inputs agree with the document
The front multipurpose input holds 100 ordinary sheets and the lower input 500, giving 600 at the original 20-lb/75-g/m² basis. Actual input-size columns positively support Letter, Legal and A4 in both. Full capacity for one size assumes both inputs contain it; mixed formats divide the available supply.
Pull out the front support, keep the stack under the tabs and maximum-height indicators, and bring the side guides to the paper without bending it. In the lower tray, release and set the side and rear guides, keep all four corners flat and slide the tray fully home. HP warns against fanning paper or loading a tray while printing.
Accept or correct the panel's actual size/type prompt and match the computer job. Leaving Tray 1 at Any Size/Any Type can make the printer use it despite a mismatch, so a loosely configured front tray can defeat the intended routine. The exact US specification's lower-media limit is 120 g/m², narrower than a generic guide table's 135; use the narrower limit and expect thicker media to reduce the nominal stack.
Connect a real computer before relying on the queue
The included wired interface is Gigabit Ethernet. The original setup waits for an address, prints the Embedded Jetdirect configuration page and selects the printer with that address in the compatible software. Check an actual document from your host instead of assuming a historical operating-system list guarantees current installation.
For direct USB, the rear computer port takes an A-to-B cable; HP recommends no more than two meters and connecting when the installer requests it. The cable is separately purchased. The front USB socket serves walk-up files, a different route that supports specified file types and does not recognize every storage device.
Wireless networking and Wireless Direct accessories are optional. Their appearance in an accessory carousel does not give the standard printer built-in Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct.
Return the printed stack for second sides
The original compatible Windows routine selects Print on both sides (manually) under Finishing. After the first sides print, place the returned stack in Tray 1 with the printed side facing up and press OK on the control panel. That is a person-assisted process, with front-input batches rather than unattended page turning.
The standard n therefore fails an essential automatic-duplex requirement even though generic promotional text discusses paper savings. The exact page's footnote limits included automatic duplex to M601dn. A3 and Tabloid are also outside the documented input-size arrangement.
Keep temporary PIN jobs separate from permanent storage
The actual computer driver offers Personal Job, followed by PIN to print and a four-digit code. At the printer, open Retrieve Job from Device Memory, select user and job, enter the PIN and release the copies. This temporary original feature supports the reviewed computer route without assuming an encrypted hard disk.
Personal jobs delete after printing and at power-off. Repeated user/job names can replace previous work, and limited space can remove older jobs. Permanent Stored Job and Quick Copy have separate optional-hard-disk conditions in the guide. Neither a storage field on a product page nor an advanced security slogan changes the narrow temporary promise made here.
Mobile printing needs its own network arrangement
The actual guide supports AirPrint over a network and notes that firmware may need updating. The exact US record also lists Mopria certification. Use the printer on Ethernet, with the compatible phone or tablet on the same reachable local network through its Wi-Fi access point. That arrangement does not require adding printer Wi-Fi.
Mobile paper-size choices, input-count guarantees, duplex and PIN behavior were not independently established for that route. They are not copied from the computer-driver plan. HP ePrint's separate Internet and Web Services requirements are also different from local AirPrint or Mopria.
Check workload, supply and the actual body
HP recommends 3,000–12,000 monthly pages, distinct from the 175,000-page maximum duty. Original one-sided speed is up to 45 Letter pages per minute, separately 43 A4; no new test is claimed. The printer includes no scanner, feeder, copier or fax, and its color display does not make color pages.
The exact US page lists 16.3-by-16.9-by-15.7-inch dimensions and 52.1 pounds, separate from packaging. A generic guide table differs and combines n/dn configurations, so measure the actual assembly and allow opening access. Verify the 100–127-V, 50/60-Hz plate and CE390A supply; its declared replacement yield does not establish remaining toner or running cost.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact M601n original declares up to 45 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 43 A4. Exact US recommendation is 3,000–12,000 monthly pages, distinct from maximum duty 175,000. No measured result, color rate or duplex speed inferred.
Paper handling
Exact M601n includes front 100 plus lower 500, total 600 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² Letter/Legal/A4 sheets; selected-size capacity assumes both inputs contain it. Set guides and panel size/type, keep flat below tabs/height marks, do not fan or load while printing. Avoid an unintended Tray 1 Any Size/Any Type mismatch. Conservative lower ordinary range 60–120 g/m² from exact US source versus generic guide 135; thicker stock reduces capacity. Automatic duplexer optional. Actual Windows manual routine uses Finishing/Print on both sides (manually), returned stack front Tray 1 printed side up, then panel OK. Up to ten envelopes use front face up/short postage edge leading into printer; rear open and extended for straight path. Optional 75-envelope feeder and larger inputs excluded.
Scanning arrangement
This is monochrome print-only hardware without a document scanner, flatbed, automatic document feeder, copy function or fax. A color control-panel display does not make color output or add color scanning.
Computer and mobile connections
Included Gigabit Ethernet and Hi-Speed USB 2.0 support a real compatible computer driver. The rear computer connection uses A-to-B USB; the original recommends no more than 2 m and connecting only when installation prompts. The front walk-up host socket is a separate file-printing route, not the computer cable port. Wireless LAN and Wireless Direct accessories are optional; no built-in Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct is presumed.
Supplies and declared yields
Exact M601n replacement is CE390A, declared about 10,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. Original detailed ordering restricts CE390X to M602/M603, so that higher-yield cartridge is not borrowed for M601n. No installed remainder, current stock, supplied full yield, price or cost per page inferred.
Software and support
The original compatible computer driver provides Personal Job with PIN to print and a four-digit PIN. Retrieve Job from Device Memory selects user/job and requests the PIN. Temporary personal jobs delete after printing and at power-off; repeated user/job names may replace earlier jobs, and space pressure can delete older jobs. Quick Copy and permanent Stored Job have separate optional-hard-disk conditions. The reviewed promise is temporary PIN-held printing, not encryption, permanent archiving or an installed secure hard disk.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US CE989A#BGJ identity/discontinued, documented 100–127-V, 50/60-Hz edition and commercial Class A context. Verify actual plate and driver; separate high-voltage unit is not convertible. Exact US per-model body 16.3 W × 16.9 D × 15.7 H inches, weight 52.1 lb, distinct from package. Generic guide combines n/dn body values and contains a visible 4515-mm depth typo; exact US n fields control, but measure actual assembly and allow opening, cable, cartridge and tray access.
