A useful fit for

A compatible commercial computer queue needing large-paper duplex alongside Letter, Legal or A4 within the 5,000–20,000 monthly recommendation.

The main tradeoff

A3/11×17 cannot use Tray 2 or the full 600-sheet reserve. Wireless hardware is optional, storage counts differ between originals, and the 84.8-lb body needs working clearance.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a USB computer print ordinary A3 duplex with 350 included sheets and PIN release?

Qualifies with a compatible HP driver, the included duplexer and eligible front 100 plus Tray 3 250 loaded with ordinary A3. Tray 2 does not add A3 capacity.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does standard 11×17 duplex have the same 600-sheet reserve as Letter?

Fails the requested 600-sheet selected-size capacity. Original 11×17 marks support Tray 1 and Tray 3 only, totaling 350 ordinary sheets; the larger overall input figure does not apply.

A wired wide-paper configuration with automatic duplex included

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 700 M712dn fits a commercial computer queue that needs two-sided monochrome output on A3 or 11×17-inch paper as well as ordinary office sizes. The exact dn includes an automatic duplexer, Ethernet and rear computer USB. Its three standard inputs provide different useful capacities depending on the selected paper.

This review covers CF236A#BGJ, the exact US configuration identified by HP. It is a manufacturer specification reference, not a promise of current inventory, price or seller condition. The documented US commercial Class A edition uses 110–127 VAC at 50/60 Hz. A regional specification PDF's 220–240-V field is not substituted for that electrical edition.

Distinguish 600 ordinary sheets from 350 large sheets

The included front 100 plus two 250-sheet drawers total 600 ordinary sheets. Letter, Legal and A4 are positively marked for all three inputs in the original supported-size table. Their full capacity assumes every eligible input contains the selected ordinary stock; keeping several forms or sizes loaded divides the reserve.

A3 and 11×17 use Tray 1 and Tray 3, with Tray 2 blank in the actual table. Their standard reserve is therefore 350 sheets, not 600. A generic US metric list also names A3 for Tray 2, but conflicts with the detailed original marks and its shorter physical maximum. The review follows the actual path-specific table.

The lower 250-sheet counts use 20-lb/75-g/m² stock. Open the front support and fold out its extension for larger-than-Letter/A4 paper, keep under tabs and fill indicators, and set guides without bending the stack. In the drawers, adjust guides, keep all corners flat and stay below the maximum line. Match the computer's size and type to the real load.

The prominently advertised 4,600-sheet maximum requires optional input hardware. It is not the standard three-input assembly, and an optional high-capacity feeder's paper-size limits also need separate checking.

Use the actual duplex size and orientation tables

The original table positively marks automatic duplex for Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and 11×17. In the compatible Windows driver, choose Print on both sides under Finishing. The original Mac HP-driver routine uses Layout and a Two-Sided binding choice. This establishes the computer route, without assuming that a phone app exposes identical controls.

For lower-drawer preprinted stock, ordinary one-sided loading is face down with the top at the front. Automatic duplex and Alternative Letterhead Mode use face up with the bottom at the front. Check the applicable mode before loading forms, and follow the actual size's fit and driver prompt instead of treating a generic diagram as universal.

The current exact US lower ordinary limit is 120 g/m², conservatively retained despite an older guide's 130. The exact specification separately gives 60–120 for duplex and front input up to 199 with reduced heavier-stock capacity. Labels, transparencies and envelopes do not gain duplex support merely by fitting a tray.

Up to ten suitable 75–90-g/m² envelopes use the front input face up with the short postage end leading. Select the real size and type in the driver. The original table explicitly keeps envelopes out of the lower drawers and automatic-duplex path.

Connect a computer and release a private job

The original Windows USB routine uses an A-to-B cable, recommends no more than 2 m/6.5 ft and says to connect only when prompted by the installer. Keep the device Ready and follow its All events wake setting. The USB cable is separate. For Ethernet, obtain the actual IP under How to Connect and Network Address or from the configuration report, then select that device in the compatible installer.

Personal Job with PIN protection is positively documented through the computer driver. The original Mac procedure uses four digits. At the keypad panel, choose Retrieve from Device Memory, the folder and job, enter the code and release copies. Names can gain a number or replace a file; space pressure can remove older jobs. Keep the source document elsewhere.

Storage descriptions differ: the 2017 original comparison lists 16-GB solid-state memory for dn, while the exact current specification lists 8 GB. This review does not guarantee a storage count or borrow the xh's 320-GB disk. It also does not import an automatic post-print or power-loss deletion rule that the actual PIN passage does not state.

Keep phone access and front USB separate

Exact US fields list AirPrint and Mopria. A local mobile arrangement uses printer Ethernet and a compatible client on the same reachable network through its wireless router. AirPrint may require suitable firmware and enabled Bonjour, AirPrint and IPP; the original explicitly excludes USB AirPrint. Mobile paper size, capacity, duplex and PIN are unconfirmed here. Wireless hardware remains optional.

The front flash-file host instead needs Enable Retrieve from USB before panel printing of supported files. Neither USB function, stored jobs nor a color display adds scanning, copying or fax to this print-only hardware.

Check supplies, monthly use and physical access

CF214A/14A and separately purchased CF214X/14X declare approximately 10,000 and 17,500 pages under ISO/IEC 19752; the original box yield is approximately 10,000. HP recommends 5,000–20,000 monthly pages, distinct from 100,000 maximum duty. Original one-sided speed is up to 40 Letter ppm, separately 41 A4.

The exact US body measures 22.4×23.4×15.4 inches and weighs 84.8 lb. Fully opened width and depth reach approximately 33.8×38.9 inches. Allow paper extension, cables and service room before selecting this dn for its actual large-paper duplex arrangement.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact originals declare up to 40 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 41 A4. Recommended use is 5,000–20,000 monthly pages, distinct from maximum duty 100,000. A4, A3 and duplex rates are not substituted for Letter speed. No measured job time or comparative performance inferred.

Paper handling

Included front 100 plus Tray 2 250 plus Tray 3 250 totals 600 ordinary sheets. Actual original paper-size table positively supports Letter, Legal and A4 in all three inputs, but A3 and Tabloid 11×17 only in Tray 1 and Tray 3: their standard ordinary reserve is 350, not 600. Generic US A3 listing for Tray 2 conflicts with the actual original marks and its shorter physical maximum; it is not used. Lower 250-sheet counts use 20-lb/75-g/m² stock; full selected-size count assumes every eligible input holds that size. Open front support and extension for paper larger than Letter/A4, keep under tabs/fill lines and adjust guides without bending the stack. Lower one-sided preprinted stock loads face down/top at the front; automatic-duplex or Alternative Letterhead Mode directions differ. Front envelope route holds ten 75–90-g/m² envelopes face up/short postage end leading; envelopes do not duplex. Current exact US lower range is 60–120 g/m², conservatively retained despite older guide 130; front 60–199, with heavier stock reducing counts. Optional feeders are not included. Actual automatic-duplex size marks positively include Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and Tabloid 11×17 for the dn. Compatible Windows HP driver uses Finishing and Print on both sides; original Mac HP driver uses Layout and Two-Sided binding. Lower preprinted duplex stock is face up/bottom at the front, distinct from simplex face down/top at the front. Exact regional CF236A specification gives ordinary duplex 60–120 g/m²; labels, transparencies and envelopes are not duplex-supported by the actual type table.

Scanning arrangement

This is monochrome print-only hardware without scanner, document feeder, copy function or fax. Generic digital-sending installation words or support-navigation links do not add multifunction hardware.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Gigabit Ethernet and rear USB 2.0 computer device connection with compatible driver; USB cable separately purchased. The original Windows routine uses an A-to-B cable, recommends at most 2 m/6.5 ft and says to connect only when the installer prompts. Keep the device Ready and configure Wake/Auto On Events for All events as instructed. Ethernet setup uses the correct device IP from How to Connect, Network Address or its configuration report. The front flash-file host is distinct and requires Enable Retrieve from USB before use. Wireless hardware remains optional.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact model replacements CF214A/14A and separately purchased CF214X/14X have approximately 10,000 and 17,500 declared pages under ISO/IEC 19752. The original box lists approximately 10,000 pages. The original guide’s non-HP-supplies policy is historical source material, not a promise about present firmware or every refilled cartridge. No current stock, price, installed remainder or cost per page inferred.

Software and support

The original exact n/dn table positively includes solid-state memory and compatible-driver Personal Job/PIN instructions, with 512 MB memory. Solid-state capacity descriptions differ between sources, so no storage-capacity guarantee is made. The macOS routine specifies a four-digit PIN. At the panel choose Retrieve from Device Memory, folder and job, enter the PIN and release copies. Duplicate names can gain a number or replace a prior file; storage pressure can remove oldest jobs. No automatic deletion-after-printing or power-loss rule is imported from another guide, because this exact passage does not establish one. No xh 320 GB hard disk or permanent archive is included.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US CF236A#BGJ commercial Class A edition documents 110–127 VAC at 50/60 Hz. The regional specification PDF’s 220–240-V entry is not borrowed for US electrical compatibility; inspect the actual plate. Current manufacturer specification reference makes no inventory, price, seller-condition or discontinuation claim, and distinct refurbished CF236AR is not substituted. Exact US closed body is 22.4 inches wide, 23.4 deep and 15.4 high, with published weight 84.8 lb. Fully opened footprint reaches approximately 33.8-inch width and 38.9-inch depth. Allow tray extension, cables, ventilation and service access, and verify actual duplexer, accessories and compatible host driver.
