M406dnIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A wired office needing ordinary monochrome output and configured computer-driver Personal Job PIN release with included storage.

The main tradeoff

No scanner or included wireless radio. Enable USB device printing before setup; verify private-job storage settings, and keep mobile duplex separate from the computer routine.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the standard US M406dn hold PIN-protected Legal duplex jobs over Ethernet with 350 sheets at 4,800 pages monthly?

Qualifies using an actual compatible computer driver, configured Personal Job PIN and included storage, with approved Legal media. Verify held-job settings; no radio or optional tray is assumed.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can an unchanged standard M406dn provide Wi-Fi Direct without a Jetdirect accessory?

Fails this connection requirement. The original exact model table and mobile section make the wireless accessory optional; it is not part of the reviewed base configuration.

Can a phone use AirPrint through the office network while the M406dn is connected by Ethernet?

Qualifies on the same local network or subnet. A printer radio is unnecessary for this documented Ethernet network route; mobile duplex and private-job options are not borrowed from the computer driver.

A compact monochrome Enterprise printer with a wired starting point

The HP LaserJet Enterprise M406dn combines a relatively small print-only body with managed-office features. The exact US page identifies 3PZ15A#BGJ. This review covers the documented 110–127-volt, 60-Hz configuration; HP separately lists 220–240-volt hardware and warns against converting operating voltage. A shared model name does not make an imported unit electrically interchangeable.

The engine prints black only. Its 2.7-inch color graphics display is a control panel, not evidence of color printing. There is no scanner, copier or fax hardware in this configuration. It suits an office that already has document capture elsewhere and wants an ordinary desktop or shared-network print queue.

HP specifies up to 40 Letter pages per minute in default mode and up to 42 in HP High Speed mode. The corresponding A4 figures are 38 and 40. Matching here uses the default 40 Letter rate. These are maker declarations rather than measured results, and the headline high-speed figure should not become a promise for every job.

The included connections and the optional radio are different purchases

The original model table confirms USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet. Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth Low Energy and NFC depend on the optional Jetdirect 3100w accessory. They are excluded from the reviewed standard setup. A wireless feature described in the guide does not establish that a particular printer has the accessory installed.

The direct USB print connection has an additional setup step worth knowing: the current guide says that the device USB port is disabled by default. Enable it through the printer controls or the embedded web server, then install suitable software. The front USB host socket serves a different purpose, such as supported document files on a flash drive; it is not the computer's print-cable socket.

Ethernet provides the shared-office route. AirPrint and Mopria are documented mobile options, so a phone can reach the wired printer through an appropriate local network. The phone's Wi-Fi connection does not require a printer radio. The AirPrint instructions specify the same network or subnet. The original Mac instructions separately warn that driver duplex controls might not be available through AirPrint, so the mobile plan does not inherit all computer-driver features.

What the included 350 sheets actually cover

The standard feeds are a 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 and a 250-sheet Tray 2, with capacities based on 75 g/m² ordinary paper. The optional 550-sheet drawer raises a configured system to 900, but that extra drawer is not included in the base capacity used here.

HP's specific paper table maps Letter, Legal and A4 to both included feeds and to automatic duplex. Legal is therefore a genuine supported size, even though a shorter current Tray 2 media list omits its name. The original loading instructions also show the Legal extension: the tray projects about two inches from the front and does not close completely. Allow that space in the intended installation.

Automatic two-sided printing still requires a supported type as well as size. Set the correct media in the driver and tray configuration. The original paper instructions explicitly exclude transparencies, labels and envelopes from duplex. Envelopes use Tray 1, up to ten, face up with the short postage end leading. Select the actual envelope size and type and the documented manual-feed option; turn two-sided printing off.

Personal jobs have a real PIN-release procedure

The exact model table marks job storage and private printing as included, alongside 1 GB of base memory and 4 GB of embedded eMMC storage. The guide's Personal Job procedure supports assigning a PIN and releasing the held document at the control panel. This is materially different from merely setting a printer administration password.

Use a compatible computer driver, select Personal Job and enable its private or secure option before sending sensitive pages. Verify that the actual installed driver exposes storage controls and that the printer holds a sample document until the correct release action. The guide describes temporary personal jobs as deleted after printing and lost when power is removed; a held queue is not a document archive.

Some generic paragraphs in the current guide call the storage destination a USB flash drive, while the model table and release steps describe included storage and printer memory. The included private-printing feature is retained here, with an explicit settings and storage verification note. An unrelated model's requirement for an additional dedicated 16 GB drive is not imposed on M406dn.

Workload, toner and the space around the body

The recommended monthly range is 900–4,800 pages. The maximum monthly duty cycle is separately 100,000; that ceiling is not the recommended everyday workload. The US supplies are 58A CF258A, approximately 3,000 pages, and 58X CF258X, approximately 10,000, with ISO/IEC 19752 yield declarations. The original regional table lists other cartridge families elsewhere, so confirm the actual distribution and compatibility before ordering.

HP discloses dynamic security and the use of new or reused HP chips. Firmware and cartridge identity therefore matter. The closed printer is approximately 15 inches wide, 14 deep and 8.7 high, weighing about 18.7 pounds with its cartridge. Fully opened service depth reaches roughly 30.8 inches. Its useful fit is a wired monochrome workgroup needing approved automatic duplex and configured personal-job release, with scanning and any optional wireless equipment planned separately.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 40 Letter ppm by default, separately 42 Letter HP High Speed; A4 rates 38/40 remain separate. Maker declarations, no measured testing. Recommended 900–4,800 monthly pages differs from maximum duty 100,000.

Paper handling

Included Tray 1 holds 100 and Tray 2 holds 250 sheets at 75 g/m², total 350. Original specific paper table confirms Letter, Legal and A4 in both included feeds and automatic duplex; Legal extends Tray 2 about two inches forward. Optional 550-sheet tray excluded. Envelopes only Tray 1, up to ten, face up/short postage end first and manual feed; envelopes, labels and transparencies are not duplex media.

Scanning arrangement

Exact M406dn is monochrome print only, with no scanner, copier, fax, glass or document feeder. Color control display is not a color print engine.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB 2.0 device printing and Gigabit Ethernet. Device USB port disabled by default per current guide and must be enabled before compatible software setup. Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, BLE and NFC require optional Jetdirect 3100w and are not included. Same-LAN Ethernet AirPrint/Mopria mobile plan separate from computer-driver features.

Supplies and declared yields

US distribution 58A CF258A about 3,000 pages or 58X CF258X about 10,000, ISO/IEC 19752. Original regional distribution table lists other supplies elsewhere; verify actual compatibility. Dynamic security expects new or reused HP chips; firmware may block non-HP chips. Remaining installed toner unknown.

Software and support

Included job storage/private printing and 4 GB eMMC are positively marked in exact model table. Compatible computer driver Personal Job can require PIN at panel; verify settings and held-job behavior. Generic current guide USB-flash wording is recorded but no additional-drive prerequisite stated for this model. Personal jobs are temporary, deleted after printing and lost on power removal. Mobile duplex and mobile PIN release not established.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US 3PZ15A#BGJ with 110–127 VAC 60 Hz hardware; separate 220–240 VAC 50/60 Hz edition is not dual voltage. Closed 15×14×8.7 inches, about 18.74 lb with cartridge (current maker rounded about 18.7). Fully open depth 30.8 inches and height 9.5; allow Legal-tray and service clearance. Surviving US reference does not establish available seller stock.
