Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a wired computer use Legal paper, 600 ordinary sheets and PIN release within a 13,000-page monthly workload?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible computer driver. Both included inputs support Legal at the stated ordinary-paper basis; Personal Job/PIN is separate from an optional encrypted disk.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the standard n automatically turn Letter pages for a direct USB job?
Fails automatic duplex. The n uses the documented manual return through Tray 1 unless a separate duplex accessory is added.
Explore this need in the finder →Does AirPrint also confirm the computer-driver PIN release feature for the same job?
Fails that combined requirement. Network AirPrint is documented, but its PIN behavior has not been established and cannot borrow the computer-driver route.

The HP LaserJet Enterprise M604n fits a prepared commercial office printing monochrome Letter, Legal or A4 documents, with 600 ordinary sheets and computer-driver PIN release. Its deciding compromise is the n configuration's manual two-sided workflow. Automatic duplex is an optional mechanism here, even though it is included with the neighboring M604dn.
HP identifies the exact US model as E6B67A#BGJ and marks it discontinued. This is an earlier configuration review based on original instructions, without a promise of stock, used-unit condition or current host software. Its Class A emissions designation also calls for the documented commercial setting.
Manage 600 sheets through two real inputs
The normal supply combines front Tray 1's 100 sheets with 500 in Tray 2. HP states these counts for ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² paper. Letter, Legal and A4 are supported in both, so the complete count for one size assumes that both contain it. An optional lower feeder is not part of the standard 600.
Open the front extension to support the stack, keep it under the fill line and let the side guides touch without bending the paper. For the lower drawer, squeeze the width and length adjustment latches before loading, keep the stack below the full indicator and close the drawer. Accept the panel configuration only when it matches the actual paper; use Modify when the detected size or type is wrong.
The exact model page limits lower-tray stock to 60–120 g/m² and allows 60–200 g/m² in the multipurpose path. A generic support table is broader, so the narrower model-specific limit is the useful planning boundary. Heavy material also reduces the nominal sheet count.
Budget time for the return pass
In the original compatible Windows driver, Finishing offers Print on both sides manually. Print the first sides, retrieve the stack, return it to Tray 1 and follow the control-panel continuation prompt. The Windows instructions do not specify a face orientation at that step; do not import a direction from an older printer's routine.
The separate original OS X manual-duplex procedure removes blank paper from Tray 1, returns the printed stack with its printed face down and continues when prompted. Driver and platform therefore matter. Neither process meets a requirement for unattended automatic duplex, and the original warns that some HP-driver functions might not be available through AirPrint.
Use the rear computer connection or the network
Gigabit Ethernet and Hi-Speed USB 2.0 are included. Use the rear device connection for a compatible computer, with a separately purchased USB cable. The front easy-access socket instead reads specified files from a flash drive; it does not turn the printer into a scanner or replace the computer's USB connection.
That front file-printing feature is disabled by default in the actual guide. An administrator must enable Retrieve from USB before a user selects the file and copy count. Supported original types include PDF, PRN, PCL, PS and CHT, rather than every file a flash drive can carry.
Infrastructure Wi-Fi and the NFC/Wi-Fi Direct accessory are optional for the n. The matching configuration therefore uses its included wired routes, without treating an accessory listing as installed radio hardware.
Hold a computer job for a PIN
The original Job Storage section says the feature is enabled by default. A compatible driver can submit a Personal Job with PIN protection; the documented OS X dialog uses four digits. At the printer, select Retrieve from Device Memory, choose the folder and job, enter the PIN and release the desired copies.
Names and available storage need attention. A replacement setting can overwrite an earlier job with the same user and job name, while space pressure may remove the oldest stored work. The separately offered encrypted hard disk is not included, and this review does not promise permanent archiving, a power-off retention rule or deletion timing borrowed from another generation.
Separate mobile convenience from driver settings
The exact US specifications list AirPrint and Mopria certification. A supported local arrangement keeps the printer on Ethernet and places a compatible mobile client on the same reachable network through its access point. USB desktop printing alone is not that arrangement.
The mobile route has no independently confirmed paper-size, capacity, duplex or PIN promise here. Those computer-driver features are not silently attached to a phone job. Historical cloud-printing names in the manual likewise do not establish that retired services operate today.
Check the workload and physical installation
HP recommends 5,000–13,000 monthly pages, separately from a 175,000-page maximum duty cycle. Its original one-sided rate is up to 52 Letter pages per minute, separately 50 A4. No measured speed or two-sided rate is claimed.
The closed unit is 16.7 inches wide, 17.8 deep and 15.7 high, weighing 49.7 pounds with cartridges. Leave additional operating access: the guide and US page differ on maximum opened depth. Verify the actual 100–127-V, 50/60-Hz plate and CF281A supply; the M605/M606 high-yield CF281X is not applicable. Choose the M604dn instead when its included automatic duplex solves the main workflow problem.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original exact M604n declares up to 52 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 50 A4; recommendation 5,000–13,000 monthly pages is distinct from 175,000 maximum duty. No test or duplex-speed result claimed.
Paper handling
Included front 100 plus lower 500 equals 600 ordinary 20-lb/75-g/m² sheets, with actual Letter/Legal/A4 support in both inputs. Full selected-size count assumes both contain that size. Adjust guides and panel size/type, keep below fill marks and do not load while printing. Lower path 60–120 g/m², front 60–200; narrower exact-model limits control over generic support page 60–220. Standard n has manual duplex only. Windows returns printed output to Tray 1 and follows panel prompt without a face orientation stated there; separate OS X routine says printed side down. Up to ten envelopes use Tray 1 face up, short postage edge leading into printer, correct envelope size/type and rear output open/extended for the recommended straight path; optional 75-envelope feeder excluded.
Scanning arrangement
This exact model is a monochrome print-only printer without a scanner, feeder, copy or fax function. A color control display and generic software references to scanning do not add document hardware.
Computer and mobile connections
Included Gigabit Ethernet and rear Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device port support a compatible computer driver; USB cable separate. Front flash-drive host port is a different file-printing feature, disabled by default until administrator enables Retrieve from USB. Infrastructure wireless server and NFC/Wi-Fi Direct accessory are optional for n.
Supplies and declared yields
Exact M604n uses CF281A/HP 81A replacement, declared about 10,500 pages under ISO/IEC 19752 and continuous-printing conditions. The actual original restricts CF281X/81X to M605/M606, so it is not borrowed. No remaining toner, current price, stock or cost per page inferred.
Software and support
The actual original computer driver offers Job Storage, Personal Job and PIN protection. The documented OS X procedure uses a four-digit PIN; Retrieve from Device Memory selects folder/job, requests the PIN and releases the selected copies. Job storage is enabled by default. Available memory, job-count settings, duplicate names and replacement choices matter: space pressure may remove oldest jobs. No permanent retention, encrypted hard disk, power-off survival or automatic release-deletion policy is promised from another generation.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US E6B67A#BGJ is discontinued and commercial Class A. Review covers documented 100–127-V, 50/60-Hz configuration, not the separate high-voltage edition; verify actual plate and host driver. Closed body 16.7 W × 17.8 D × 15.7 H inches and 49.7 lb with cartridges. Guide n opened depth 29.7 inches differs from exact US maximum 33; no operating-clearance guarantee, and extra tray/cable/service access is required.
