LaserJet Enterprise 500 MFP M525dn CF116AIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible office network that needs two-sided color document capture and monochrome duplex output without requiring single-pass scanning or included fax.

The main tradeoff

Its feeder reverses originals rather than capturing both sides in one pass. Wireless networking and analog fax are options, and current software plus the actual electrical version need checking.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it capture both sides of Legal originals over the documented network route and support 5,000 monthly printed pages with 600 included sheets?

Yes, with reversing duplex capture, the configured shared-folder workflow and compatible driver controls; close the rear output for automatic print duplex.

Does the dn capture both original sides in one pass?

No. Its documented feeder reverses originals. The Flow c configuration has the different single-pass mechanism.

Is analog fax part of the standard dn package?

No. The fax accessory is optional, so the assessed base configuration does not meet an included-fax requirement.

A wired office MFP with automatic, reversing document capture

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 MFP M525dn brings monochrome printing, copying and color scanning together in an earlier office machine. Its 50-sheet feeder can capture both sides automatically, but it does so by reversing the originals. That distinction is central to choosing it: automatic duplex scanning is present, while single-pass scanning is not.

The dn also differs from the f and Flow c packages in useful ways. Analog fax is optional, the convenience stapler is absent and its documented storage is solid state. An office that needs straightforward wired document handling may accept those differences; an office depending on the missing additions should compare the exact alternative configuration.

Choose around originals as well as printed sheets

The scanner captures color even though the printer produces black-and-white pages. Letter, Legal and A4 originals are documented, and the flatbed reaches 8.5 by 14 inches. A Legal sheet therefore does not have to use the feeder merely because it is longer than Letter.

For a two-sided stack, allow for the reversing feeder’s process. HP lists a lower duplex capture rate than the Flow c’s different mechanism. The Flow version also adds a 100-sheet feeder, embedded optical character recognition, EveryPage detection and a physical keyboard. These are configuration differences, not settings that transform the dn’s feeder into the other hardware.

Set up the network destination before the first important scan

The reviewed file-delivery route saves a scan into a shared network folder. The administrator enables the function in the printer’s management interface, configures the destination and prepares a suitable Quick Set or folder path. The user then selects the file and capture settings at the panel.

This needs a compatible computer or server destination and the appropriate access permissions. The operating guide lists historical software environments; those lists do not prove compatibility with every present system. Confirm that the intended network-folder arrangement works with the actual office setup. A USB printing cable does not, by itself, establish a supported USB scanner route.

Keep paper capacity, output bins and duplexing distinct

The ordinary supplied input is 100 sheets in the multipurpose tray plus 500 in the main cassette, totaling 600. The two optional 500-sheet feeders increase expansion capacity but are not included in that number. The documented inputs and automatic print-duplex path accept Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary paper.

The rear output setting matters. Opening the rear bin selects a face-up path and makes the duplexer unavailable, so close it for automatic two-sided printing. Preprinted stationery also has different loading orientations for simplex and duplex jobs. Follow the relevant diagram and media setting rather than assuming one orientation fits every job.

Envelopes use Tray 1 only, with a separate ten-envelope limit and the specified face-up, short-postage-edge-first orientation. Ordinary-paper capacity and automatic duplex support should not be combined into an envelope-duplex claim.

Match the recurring workload and actual private-print controls

HP recommends 2,000–6,000 printed pages per month. The 75,000-page maximum duty figure serves a different purpose and should not replace that recurring-workload range. Declared output is up to 42 Letter pages per minute; the feeder’s scanning figures describe another task and another unit.

The dn/f operating guide documents stored-job modes with optional PIN protection. With compatible controls, the user assigns the private-job settings in the driver and retrieves the job at the printer. That is more specific than assuming a disk or a panel-login PIN automatically protects every print job. AirPrint is a separate documented network route, with firmware conditions and its own available controls.

Consider the earlier machine as a complete offer

The closed body is approximately 20.3 by 21.6 by 22.7 inches and weighs 64.9 pounds with its cartridge. Allow extra space for opening the scanner, loading paper and reaching cables. Verify the electrical plate of the actual regional unit; the reference’s alternative voltage specifications are not permission to treat every unit as universal voltage.

Original M525 supplies are HP 55A and 55X, rather than the color cartridges listed for the neighboring M575 series. Published cartridge yields do not establish toner remaining in an earlier offer. Choose the M525dn when its wired setup, reversing duplex capture and ordinary-paper capacity fit the work, with condition and current compatibility checked alongside the specifications.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Declared M525 output is up to 42 Letter or 40 A4 ppm. The dn/f reversing scanner has separate two-sided rates up to 18 black or 15 color Letter images per minute, versus the faster Flow c figures. Recommended monthly print volume is 2,000–6,000; 75,000 is maximum duty.

Paper handling

Included Tray 1 holds 100 ordinary sheets and Tray 2 holds 500, totaling 600; the two optional 500-sheet feeders do not count as supplied. The exact dn/f paper table marks Letter, Legal and A4 in both inputs and automatic print duplex. Up to ten envelopes use Tray 1 only, face up with short postage edge first. Preprinted main-cassette orientation differs for simplex and duplex. Close the rear output bin for automatic duplex; opening it selects the face-up path and disables the duplexer.

Scanning arrangement

The dn has color scanning, a 50-sheet reversing automatic duplex feeder and an 8.5 × 14-inch flatbed. Letter, Legal and A4 originals are documented. This is not the Flow c single-pass, 100-sheet feeder. The reviewed computer-file route is enabled Save to Network Folder with compatible network destination, permissions, path and settings. Direct USB pull-scanning remains unconfirmed. Embedded OCR and EveryPage are not included on dn.

Computer and mobile connections

Computer USB and Gigabit Ethernet are standard; USB host sockets for flash drives or accessories are distinct. Wireless networking is optional. AirPrint needs the supported network and suitable firmware; it does not establish mobile scan delivery or every desktop control. Mopria remains unconfirmed for this exact dn assessment.

Supplies and declared yields

The M525 parts table lists HP 55A / CE255A and 55X / CE255X, with approximately 6,000 and 13,500 declared pages respectively. The standard-capacity original cartridge is not proof of remaining toner in an earlier offer. The dn has no included convenience stapler or analog fax; fax is an option. M575 color cartridges do not belong to this monochrome model.

Software and support

The original comparison and footnote specify dn solid-state storage of at least 8 GB, rather than the f/c secure hard disk. The actual dn/f user guide documents Personal Job and Stored Job, optional PIN assignment, four-digit Use PIN to Print on compatible OS X and retrieval from device memory at the panel. Do not infer controls from general encryption or user-login PINs. Present computer/network compatibility needs checking.

Electrical edition and setup

Original reference identifies dn as CF116A and lists North American Letter use alongside separate regional power requirements. An exact offered US electrical option is not established here, so mains compatibility remains unknown pending the actual plate. The regional alternatives must not be treated as one universal input. The 2012 configuration reference is earlier, not a current stock or official discontinuation finding. Closed body 20.3 × 21.6 × 22.7 inches; 64.9 lb with cartridge; leave opening, tray and cable access.
